A white: but saying Asians are naturally smart is POSITIVE discrimination:)))
Me: The model minority myth was invented by whites as a tool of antiblackness to create divisions between communities of color and prove that ‘anyone can succeed in America if they just TRY hard enough!!1!’ thereby implying that antiblackness is black ppl’s own fault for not TRYING enough. Additionally, it relies on false interpretations of data and hurts the opportunities of all Asians, particularly less privileged ones, and dehumanizes Asians by furthering stereotypes of us as some kind of innately robot-like monolithic-minded hive, devalues our individual accomplishments and uses us as a tool to further antiblackness
i love this post
As a teacher, I can say with certainty that “smart” stereotypes are absolutely not positive for my Asian students. A few things I’ve heard repeatedly:
- Asian student gets the highest grade on a test; other students say, “Well, of course he/she got an A.” Any work the student did is minimized because it’s assumed perfect scores come naturally.
- Asian student is in a class for lower-performing students; other students question aloud whether he/she is really Asian and/or in the right class.
- Asian student gives a wrong answer in an advanced class; other Asian kids say, “You can’t be on our team anymore.” White kids say, “You’re one of us today.” Jokes ensue.
- Teachers complain that Asian students did poorly on district or state tests. Actual quote: “With a name like that, he should have brought up our class average.”
Those are just some of the most common comments, but there are many others. There is no way this stereotype is positive for these kids.
Let’s stop pretending we’re living in the 1800s

this is True. as a transracial adoptee (a poc who was raised in a white or mostly white environment) i felt more out of place because the “other asian students” were in more advanced classes and/or the ‘gifted’ program.

i’m not ‘amazing’ at school. i’m slow. 9 times out of 10 i’m That Kid™ who finishes their test 20 minutes after everyone else has. i’m not in the honors societies or top of the class. i don’t have the highest grades or ‘stellar achievements’.

yes, i’m east asian.

  • and tbqh i’m tired of asian kids being told that they *have* to get certain grades. i’m tired of seeing little for asian kids who struggle with school. who have (gasp) learning disabilities.
  • yes, we can have LDs too. to all the asian kids out there who feel ashamed that their grades aren’t “meeting standards”– you are amazing and yes, your best IS good enough. never forget that. there’s so much more to life than grades and ‘intelligence’. i can speak with you- from personal experience..
  • also the ‘minority myth’ leaves fellow Black siblings in the dust. (hey, we poc have to stick together and advocate for one another) to Black kids out there, you are awesome. you do have potential. you are wonderful, powerful, and strong. if you’re Black and reading this, no matter where you are educationally or generally lifewise, YOU ARE IMPORTANT AND FANTASTIC.
  • one last thing: for our mixed Black + asian kids. Y’all are superstars. i’m sorry that society has put you in a never ending limbo. you are ethereal and majestic. what you’re doing and where you’re at is enough. doesn’t matter where you are in life, you are worthwhile and too lovely to be ignored.

Anonymous asked:

how about some hc about tattoos, like what each Hamilton character would have as a tattoo?

boss’ memo : ooohhh interesting ! nice !!! =D everyone gets tattoos ! also tagging this was hell

  • alex : something in his mother’s handwriting–preferably, “i love you”. it’s on his right forearm–he can cover it with his sleeves, but if he needs to look at it, he can. he has the northern part of a compass on the back of his left shoulder.
  • john : he has the southern part of a compass on the back of his left shoulder, and he couldn’t resist getting a turtle which looks like a constellation. it’s very small, and located on his wrist, so he can look at it when he’s feeling down. it says, “follow the stars at your own pace”, above it.
  • hercules : has the eastern part of a compass on the back of his left shoulder. he has a horseshoe on his right rib–he got it while drunk. has a watercolor tattoo of a phoenix on his lower back.
  • lafayette : has the western part of a compass on the back of his left shoulder. “c'est pour cela que je suis née”, is written, encircling his left wrist. there’s a watercolor tattoo of a rose on the back of his neck. (it’s the national flower of america, only fitting.)

(later on, all four of them also got the words, “rise up” on their collarbones.)

  • aaron burr : has, “patience, darling”, written on his forearm in theodosia sr.’s handwriting. he looks at it every day.
  • george washington : “stay alive”, is written on his left inner forearm. has a few drunk and patriotic tattoos from when he was younger. luckily, most can be covered up. most. (don’t worry, it’s just a star on his collarbone.)
  • thomas jefferson : thomas has a tattoo of a mockingbird on his upper arm.
  • james madison : he does not want any needles even remotely near him.
  • maria lewis / reynolds : she has several tattoos, with her first ones being, “resist” and “endure” on her left and right wrists, respectively. she also tends to get tattoos to remember people she’s lost. (not all of her siblings survived to adulthood.) one of the notable tattoos she has is some watercolor angel wings on her upper back. she loves looking at the colors of it in the mirror.
  • angelica schuyler : she only has one, which says, “nevertheless, she persisted”. it’s on her right upper arm. she does want to get something in eliza and peggy’s handwriting, but she’s still unsure.
  • eliza schuyler : she won’t get them anywhere particularly visible, so most of her tattoos are on her legs. she has three colorless sunflowers which go from small, medium, to large on her left hip. (they’re all rather small, though.)
  • peggy schuyler : she has a bee tattoo on her right hand, with the dotted lines behind it forming a small heart.
  • king george : … it’s a crown, on the back of his neck. he also has roses on his right shoulder.

More than 100 gay men have been detained “in connection with their nontraditional sexual orientation, or suspicion of such,” according to the New York Times, which cites the opposition newspaper Novaya Gazeta. The Russian newspaper says it confirmed the news with government officials and an analyst of the region also confirmed the news to the Times with her own sources.
Three men are known to have been murdered, although the real number is likely to be higher.

in almost every genocide, the first “act” is the rounding up and killing of a group of men, specifically.

In “root and branch” genocides they [”civilian men of ‘battle age’”] are often the first group to be separated out and massacred, paving the way for the murder of women, children, and elderly men. In more common articulations of genocide, however, they can be the only group slated for outright massacre, while women, children, and elderly men suffer a range of alternative fates involving rape, sexual exploitation, torture, forced maternity, murder, and expulsion.
Gender and the Future of Genocide Studies and Prevention

as the rest of this article explains this isn’t to say that men have it worst in a genocide, but that it’s important when you see a very common red flag for genocide to pay attention to the “conflict” in case any more markers of an impending genocide occur.

the g word is really loaded and i’m not bringing this up because i want to start an avalanche of “CHECHNYA IS COMMITTING GENOCIDE AGAINST GAY PEOPLE” fear mongering (that is the absolute last thing that i want). it’s just not possible to prevent any genocide without questioning whether a current conflict might eventually get there. and i do not think it’s nothing that genocide watch is reporting on this.

UPDATE 4/10/17

Gay men arrested in a ‘purge’ in the Russian region of Chechnya are being held in concentration camp-style prisons, reports have alleged.
Early reports emerged earlier this month that gay people are being targeted in the region, which is part of Russia but has substantial autonomy.
Russian newspapers and human rights groups report that more than 100 gay men have been detained “in connection with their non-traditional sexual orientation, or suspicion of such” as part of a purge. Several people were also reportedly feared dead following violent raids.
In a chilling response, a Chechen government spokesperson denied that there are any gay people to detain, insisting that “you can’t detain and harass someone who doesn’t exist in the republic”. The Kremlin denied any knowledge of a purge.
But reports have since emerged that the men arrested are being kept in horrific concentration camp prisons, where violent abuse and torture is common.
Based on interviews with eyewitnesses and survivors, Novaya Gazeta reports that a secret prison has been set up in the town of Argun to detain the men arrested in the purge.
One man who was released from the camp told the newspaper that he was subjected to violent “interrogations” at the camp, as Chechen officials attempted to get him to confess the names and locations of more gay men.
The officials also seized his mobile phone, targeting his network of contacts regardless of whether they were gay or not.
The camp was reportedly set up by Chechen forces in a former military headquarters in the town.
The newspaper reports allegations that the Speaker of the Parliament of Chechnya was among officials to visit the site, though the claims have not been substantiated.
The detainees face electric shock torture and violent beatings, while some of them have been held to ransom and used to extort their families.
Tanya Lokshina of Human Rights Watch wrote: “For several weeks now, a brutal campaign against LGBT people has been sweeping through Chechnya.
She continued: “Law enforcement and security agency officials under control of the ruthless head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, have rounded up dozens of men on suspicion of being gay, torturing and humiliating the victims.
“Some of the men have forcibly disappeared. Others were returned to their families barely alive from beatings. At least three men apparently have died since this brutal campaign began.”
She added: “These days, very few people in Chechnya dare speak to human rights monitors or journalists even anonymously because the climate of fear is overwhelming and people have been largely intimidated into silence.
“Filing an official complaint against local security officials is extremely dangerous, as retaliation by local authorities is practically inevitable.
“It is difficult to overstate just how vulnerable LGBT people are in Chechnya, where homophobia is intense and rampant.
“LGBT people are in danger not only of persecution by the authorities but also of falling victim to ‘honour killings’ by their own relatives for tarnishing family honour.”
Alexander Artmyev from Amnesty International spoke to Metro.co.uk.
He said that people who are not in Russia can help by joining the charity’s Urgent Action on Chechnya.
The action encourages people to write in Russian or your own language to Chairman of the Investigation Committee and Acting Head of the Investigation Committee for the Chechen Republic.
Amnesty has also asked the letter, which should ask for an investigation and appeal for protection for LGBT individuals, to be copied into Human Rights groups and diplomatic missions from your country.
