TAKEUCHI NAOKO INTERVIEW AND ART COMMENTARY TRANSLATION This is a complete translation of the Takeuchi Naoko-related texts from the artbook 5-nin no amajin/purojin ten / 5 Amateurs Turned Pro Exhibit, available for download at Miss Dream. It contains a long 50-questions interview, as well as Takeuchiโs comments on the 20 pieces of color art she chose to include in the exhibit. It would probably be best to read this in tandem with the scans available at Miss Dream, so you can look at the art while reading her comments.

We always talk shit about Mamorus bad fashion and usually think his manga fashion style is very decent (besides the cow print anyway lol)
But listen the boy literally cant dress right he doesnt even wear a tuxedo right, theres 3 types for specific occassions with specific etiquette and our boy is wearing all 3 styles at once what a mess.

Oh he's not technically breaking any rules, Tuxedo Mask's outfit isnt a traditional kind of tuxedo at all. Its a military Mess suit most likely based on the formal attire worn by the French Military! The uniform is crazy similar to Tuxedo Masks whole drip. Theyre also worn by royalty! Mamoru is a prince and a king!
Funny enough, King Endymion actually wears a traditional style tuxedo, with coat tails and everything. Endymion seems more associated with the coattails, so Mamoru on the Kanzenban covers probably isn't Mamoru at all but Prince Endymion!

I think he has coat tails in Crystal's design cus Sakou used Kanzenban as a reference- Cus he's never actually depicted with having coattails in the actual pages or artbook outside of King Endymion. Or maybe cus mess jackets and white tie tuxedos share a similar waist design, Sakou and gang thiught he was wearing a white tie tux and probably didn't know about Mess Jackets, at least not by name.

Sailor Moon Crystal has generally been a messy experience with being faithful to Naoko Takeuchi's original design. Sakou didn't deserve as much criticism though her design was flawed by design execution. Takahashi is generally ugly art with smooth animation. Tadano is barely close to resembling Takeuchi's art style and even then Crystal didn't need to look like the manga at that being the point in which Sailor Moon Crystal should've had its own distinct art style.
I agree with most except for distinct style. You could argue s3 is a distinct style (it doesnt follow the manga at all and its takashi's style at its most basic imo) and like you said it's ugly as hell.
Tadano's style is just the 90s style (which in s1 and R's case is pretty close to the manga, just with early 90s elements. thats what the 90s anime style is.) but way more cuter but like modern standard cute, so snub dot noses flatter colors ect.
I think Naokos style does deserve to be animated. Her style started this in the 1st place, and people do like it. Sailor Moon wouldnt be the same with a new distinct style as we saw with S3. The 90s anime is also in its own right close, just with style trends in 90s anime. Tadano took that old design (itohs specifically imo) and gave it modern ekemnts ie the snub noses and flatter textures.
There's just now like 40 styles under Naoko now compared to back in the 90s that you cant just Pick one and expect it to be accurate to a single page or art book. Also Naoko's style would be very unique against other cuter, snub nose, styles. why shouldn't it be animated?
the trick is striking a balance between her styles, choosing the right colors, and time in the industry. ..and maybe a dfferent studio but that wouldn't change much imo.
