Writing awesome antagonists

You guys asked for it. So, here ya go:

1. An antagonist isn’t necessarily a villain

  • When I hear the word ‘villain’, I think of someone with sinister/evil intentions. Someone who wants to rule the world or ruins nature by using dark magic or kicks puppies. These characters can be great in stories, but they’re not the only option for conflict.
  • An antagonist can be your protagonist’s competitor, an overprotective loved one, someone with a different view, or even a different side of the protagonist themself (think Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde).
  • If your aim is to write an antagonist (who may or may not be a villain),then this post is for you!

2. Motivation is the holy grail

  • Do not make your antagonist evil for the sake of being evil. The most famous example of this is Iago in the Shakespeare play Othello (yes, Shakespeare made mistakes. Deal with it.)
  • In children’s stories or melodramatic stage plays, it’s fine if your villain simply exists because there has to be someone evil to oppose the MC’s good. But if you’re writing anything MG or higher, this isn’t gonna cut it anymore.
  • People are complicated. They have different morals, beliefs and alliances. But most people believe that they are good, that they are justified in the way they act and treat others. So, even though a great amount of people are dicks, they don’t think they are.
  • This should translate to your antagonist. They need to have a reason for opposing the protagonist. The first thing you should determine for each character in your book, is their fundamental motivation. What is it that they want/are striving for? Is your antagonist ambitious above all else and they are determined to become King? Is she trying to kill your MC because their blood is the only cure to some alien disease. Are they scared of the unknown and detest the protag because of their ancestry? Whatever the case is, it needs to be a real, identifiable and strong motive.
  • If you want to go into a more evil direction and use an inherently flawed/dangerous motivation, I would suggest linking it to solid reasons. e.g. If you’re writing something like the evil queen in Snow White, you need to link her psychopathic vanity to the flaws of the society she grew up in or the way she was treated as a child etc. Maybe the character has antisocial personality disorder (psychopathy) or was raised to squash all competition etc.
  • Motivation is even more important if you intend to write some scenes from the perspective of the antagonist

3. Near invincibility

  • You can have more than one antagonist in your story, but the big baddie should be REALLY big.
  • The main antagonist needs to be the biggest thing your protagonist has ever had to face. And they need to be a more-than-worthy opponent.
  • This ups the tension in your novel, since the reader will be anticipating the final showdown and truly wondering whether the MC will be able to come out on top.
  • The way to do this is to litter small conflicts between the two characters throughout the story. You protagonist should have altercations with the antagonist/their army/their minions before the big conflict at the end. Each of these smaller show-downs should end in the protagonist losing/having to retreat/surrendering/getting severely injured and discouraged.
  • You can show the protagonist beating other opponents, but they shouldn’t get the upper hand over the main antagonist until the final conflict. This shows the reader than the MC will really have to dig deep in order to overcome the big conflict.
  • NB: The antagonist needs to start out waaayyy stronger than the protagonist.

4. Antagonist plot twists

  • Antagonists/villains can be great tools for shocking plot twists.
  • This mostly has to do with playing with expectations of who the villain will be.
  • So, maybe the person your characters thought was the antagonist has been under the evil influence of an even bigger baddie the whole time.
  • Maybe the antagonist turns out to be the one with the better philosophy/plan.
  • Maybe one of the “good” characters turns out to be the actual villain.
  • Maybe the antagonist is only a figment of the protagonist’s imagination (think Black Swan).
  • Maybe the system is the real bad guy and your antagonist is just another victim.
  • Whatever floats your boat. Just know that you can do wonderful, twisty things with the antagonist. Use that to your advantage.

5. Redemption, anyone?

  • This is a highly contested topic, but I believe that antagonists can and should sometimes be redeemed.
  • How this happens depends on your specific story and the character. Obviously, if the antagonist committed genocide and poisoned kittens, they got some splainin to do. In these cases, the change in mind of the character has to be warranted. Something HUGE needs to happen to them that changes the way they think and behave. And they better be fucking sorry and willing to do whatever it takes to make things right.
  • If your antagonist isn’t the personification of evil, this will be a bit easier. Since they probably opposed the protagonist due to societal ideologies or fraudulent beliefs, it only requires the truth to be revealed for them to shift their alliance. They should still say sorry, though. It’s only polite.
  • My advice with redemption arcs is that the antagonist has to suffer before they can truly be redeemed. They have to face some consequences for the time they spent on the wrong side of the fight. And they shouldn’t be trusted/accepted by the protagonist immediately.
  • If you want to learn how to do a redemption arc right, look at Zuko’s story in Avatar: The Last Airbender. He has the best redemption arc in fictional history.

Alright, that’s all I have for now. I hope that you guys found this useful. If you want me to do a post about creating an antagonistic character that hooks the reader, be sure to leave a comment.

My face is having uncontrollable spasms. Great. It hurts really, really, really bad.

I think part of why I have trouble explaining pain to the doctor is when they ask about the pain scale I always think “Well, if someone threw me down a flight of stairs right now or punched me a few times, it would definitely hurt a lot more” so I end up saying a low number. I was reading an article that said that “10” is the most commonly reported number and that is baffling to me. When I woke up from surgery with an 8" incision in my body and I could hardly even speak, I was in the most horrific pain of my life but I said “6” because I thought “Well, if you hit me in the stomach, it would be worse.”

I searched and searched for the post this graphic was from, and the OP deactivated, but I kept the graphic, because my BFF does the same thing, uses her imagination to come up with the worst pain she can imagine and pegs her “10″ there, and so is like, well, I’m conscious, so this must be a 5, and then the doctors don’t take her seriously. (And she then does things like driving herself to the hospital while in the process of giving birth. Probably should have called an ambulance for that one!)

So I found this and sent it to her. Because this is what they want to know: how badly is this pain affecting you? Not on a scale of “nothing” to “how I’d imagine it’d feel if bears were eating my still-living guts while I was on fire”.

I hate reposting stuff, but I’ll never find that post again and OP is deactivated, so, here’s a repost. I can delete this later, i just wanted to get it to you and I can’t embed images in a chat or an ask.

This is possibly why it took several weeks to diagnose my fractured spine.

Pain Scale transcription:

10 - I am in bed and I can’t move due to my pain. I need someone to take me to the emergency room because of my pain.

9 - My pain is all that I can think about. I can barely move or talk because of my pain.

8 - My pain is so severe that it is difficult to think of anything else. Talking and listening are difficult.

7 - I am in pain all the time. It keeps me from doing most activities.

6 - I think about my pain all of the time. I give up many activities because of my pain.

5 - I think about my pain most of the time. I cannot do some of the activities I need to do each day because of the pain.

4 - I am constantly aware of my pain but can continue most activities.

3 - My pain bothers me but I can ignore it most of the time.

2 - I have a low level of pain. I am aware of my pain only when I pay attention to it.

1 - My pain is hardly noticeable.

0 - I have no pain.

It’s also really important to get this kind of scale to people who have chronic pain, because chronic pain drastically lowers your perception of how “bad” any kind of pain actually is, and yet something like this pain scale is extremely user friendly.

For example, if someone asked me how much pain I’m in at any given time, I’d say hardly any, and yet I’m apparently at a chronic 2.5, and it only goes up from there depending on the day.

There’s also a similarly useful “Fatigue Scale”

Thank you

This is so important y'all I have shitty shoulders and knees and a messed up jaw so if you asked I'd go eh it's whatever but my shoulders sit around a 3, my knees at a 2.5ish and my jaw is at 2 and I'm thankful. Because they've all hit 5 in the past month, 6 in the past few, and all of them have gotten to 7 in the past 12 months. But like. If a shark and a bear tried to rip me apart it would be worse. I had no idea how to rate pain because like sure my jaw hurts so bad it's literally hard to walk, but if a cougar started gnawing on my skull that would probably hurt more sooo... Then I started going off of this and my doctor was like um wtf...? And I got a referral for physical therapy after 3 years of shoulder pain, and a splint after 4.5 years of jaw pain.

less “if you see a man and woman together at pride be nice! they could be bi/pan/trans/ace/aro” and more “stop gendering strangers to harass them anywhere, but especially at pride holy shit”

you know what? i want this to reach the people who do this– especially the ones claiming to support trans folk (usually in really hollow ways lol i’m not bitter). keep reblogging– i want this sentiment to be widespread and for people to stop gendering strangers! especially in explicitly LGBTQ+ spaces!

Let’s develop some characters, shall we?

As a part of my 500 followers celebration, I’ve decided to host a giant ask event! I have an absolutely huge list of oc questions I’ve come up with to ask about your characters, either wip or RP related! So, if you reblog this post, I’ll send you 2-3 character related questions through asks! I’ve attempted to make these somewhat unique questions that may require some more thought to answer than your usual “what’s your favourite colour”, since I’ve found those are the best ways to develop one’s characters! I’ve also attempted to make them answerable no matter the genre the ocs fall under!

I won’t be choosing characters since these questions will be chosen randomly, so you can answer for whoever you so please! I personally love choosing characters based on a die roll~

Well? Get those inboxes open, and let’s get started!

Writers As Kinds of Tea

Jasmine: Gentle, flowery prose with beautiful romantic storylines. They’re a staple of indie and traditional writing. They usually are sweet and their characters tend to be gentle and warm. They collect pretty candles and their moodboards are very neat.

Earl Grey: This writer is in the quiet libraries. They are always enthusiastic about writing, then they get on the computer and goof off on tumblr. They do eventually write, little by little. Their characters aren’t always the strongest, but their worldbuilding is on point.

Chai: These are the ones who are up all night writing. Their action scenes and villains are electric and their romances fiery. They’re the strongest when it’s 2 am and they’re hopped up on sugar and paranoia. They do NaNo every year and they have like 90 WIPs.

Lemon Ginger: Smut Sneakers. Now, these writers are amazing at setting everything up and then suddenly, when you’re at the bottom of the cup… It’s lemony, spicy smut that hits you in the stomach. They’re fun and bouncy and great at comforting people.

Darjeeling: These are the sci-fi writers who write about beautiful distant planets. They collect stationary and make moodboards instead of writing. They are down-to earth and write some of most tearjerking angst you will ever read.

Matcha: These are the short story writers. Their stories are fluffy and warm and leave you feeling energetic. They have a gentle prose and the fluff they write pulls you in until you safe and warm.

Orange Pekoe: They’re not very good under pressure, but they’re trying damnit. Most of their stuff is dark and terrifying and needs to have milk and sugar added to it. They like dystopias, monsters and apocalypses.

Okay so a few days ago I posted about me selling hair and I am still doing that, HOWEVER! I’m not always dumb. I realized that, recently, the vendor changed it up a bit so I can place individual orders. Which is a big deal. So if anyone sees this and finds themselves with an extra couple of bucks they’d like to put toward me pursuing goals in exchange for eternal thanks and 10% off if you ever wanna buy hair(or a wig!) lmk? And like if you shoot a big chunk, like $10 or $15 I’ll also write a thing for you? Also you’ll have my gratitude forever and if I can ever help you with anything I’ll do it, and if you see this a reblog would be rad even if you can’t help out :)

Quill is dead right now so this is their ghost speaking. (And yes that person up there is a poor attempt at drawing myself~ So just imagine that person flailing their arms around wildly because their brain cannot comprehend what’s happening right now.)

500 FOLLOWERS??? AND I’M POSTING THIS RIGHT ON THIS BLOG’S 1 MONTH ANNIVERSARY. I AM. CONFUZZLED.

So hey, that’s a thing! That I still don’t believe. But, if you’ve already seen my previous post on this, then you’d know it’s raffle time!

First off? I’d like to remind everyone just how AMAZINGLY MARVELOUS AND AWE-INSPIRING AND OUTRAGEOUSLY NICE AND WELCOMING Y’ALL ARE. Every single time something of mine is reblogged with a nice comment or tags (and trust me, I read and cherish them all), I freak out. Half due to disbelief, half because I never thought my ideas would be interesting to people? That people would like my stuff enough to share it? I’m talking to actual brilliance on this site, published authors, people that are going to become famous and well-known creators some day? And they think MY stuff is worth attention? AND I’VE MADE FRIENDS WITH SOME OF THESE PEOPLE???

Heck.

Anyways! Onto the raffle~

We got PRIZES

1st prize is a full body, fully coloured and shaded sketch of one of your original characters or a character from your favourite book/movie/comic etc!

2nd prize is a fully coloured and shaded bust sketch of anything detailed in the above! Like that Dione pic I posted!

3rd, 4th, and 5th prizes are one rough uncoloured sketch of your chosen character!

Now, I will draw SFW humanoids only, as that’s more where my skillset lies, but I can certainly attempt (humanoid) aliens and robots and stuff! (Unlikely anthros, though, fur is not fun.)

I’ll also be hosting a giant ask event this weekend, where I’ll be putting up a post you can reblog if you want some asks about your wips sent to you! So keep an eye out for that~

Okay Quill, but what do I have to do?

  1. Be a follower of this nerd~
  2. Reblog this post and add a comment or put in the tags that you want to be added, before April 5!

Yeah that’s it! Once I pick the winners, I’ll message each of them to learn more about their characters and what they want drawn!

Good luck, my friends!

Taglist under the cut~

So I may have had an ulterior motive to finally posting my art up…

Would anyone be interested in a raffle event for some art of their characters? I’ll likely be offering a fully coloured+shaded full body sketch, bust sketches like that Dione pic I posted, and some rough uncoloured sketches as prizes~ I know I don’t have much up as examples of my work, but I’d absolutely adore drawing my followers’ characters!

I’m also thinking of doing an ask event inspired by @stephrawlingwrites‘s brilliance! Let me know what you think!

how can ppl say cats dont have feelings like.

when my cat got deadly sick she refused to eat a single thing and it had been days but when i started crying she ate just a little bit, and upon seeing how happy it made me, kept doing it whenever she could.

now whenever im sad or crying she finds wherever i am with a mouthful of food and eats the pieces one by one, every time looking up at me making sure i was watching her eat it all because she knew it made me happy. and it DOES make me happy

i love cats!!!

im so glad my little Foofy has touched everyone’s hearts… she luvs you all

what a precious good beastie

I really don’t understand people who say cats are soulless or whatevs. One of our cats comes RUNNING. absolutely ZOOMING through the house when he hears you throw up and he sits with you. the whole time. he also sits with you when you cry. or when you bleed.

And my rescue baby Crouton? On all the gods she is the kindest, most sympathetic soul I’ve ever met. She always sleeps with me but if I’ve had a hard day she nudges up under my arm for the night. And when I get home, she’s waiting for me to pick her up so I can have my welcome-home kisses with her little wet tongue.

There is no dogs-vs-cats argument. they both fucking rock.

Okay so I don’t really do this but… I just made kind of a big investment in myself? I’m gonna sell hair, like bundles of human hair, and try making wigs. So I bought a lifetime membership(with a hair vendor) that essentially ate my money because I’ve been helping my boyfriend financially since his dad sucks but anyway I don’t have enough to actually get hair now.

Sooo if you have even a little bit of money to spare I’d really appreciate It? And like if you ever want hair or a wig you save 10%?

Idk man I’m just trying to support him but also my writing and this is something I’ve been wanting to try so if you’d like to donate to buying my first package(the bottom one is $367, for reference) and get 10% off anything forever, PM me and I’ll send you the email for my PayPal? I’d post it here but my name is in it so I’d rather not? If you donate a good chunk($15?) I’ll write you a little something too if you want.

Also if you can reblog this if you see it cuz like I don't know people here?
