Reverb 2018: Meeting the Family

Happy Reverb, everyone!

My AU idea this time around was fairly simple: Maka, whose family is well-established in the Pokemon world, makes friends with an illegally-created Mewtwo, because Maka is here to befriend the misunderstood. Soul, who’s a late-blooming newbie trainer and totally not prepared for this, runs into Mewtwo, and through them, Maka, who he comes to admire and more.

My partner’s story will be linked here when it’s posted!

Feinstein: You’re a big, powerful man. Why didn’t you [gestures pushing motion]?

Crews: Senator, as a black man in America [sigh]…

Feinstein: Say it as it is. I think it’s important.

Crews: …you only have a few shots at success. You only have a few chances to make yourself a viable member of the community. I’m from Flint, Michigan. I have seen many many young black men who were provoked into violence, and they were imprisoned, or they were killed, and they’re not here. My wife for years prepared me. She said, “If you ever get goaded, if you ever get prodded, if you ever have anyone try to push you into any kind of situation, don’t do it. Don’t be violent.” And she trained me. I’ll be honest with you it was the strength of my wife who trained me and told me, “If this situation happens, let’s leave.” And the training worked because I did not go into my first reaction, I grabbed her hand, we left, but the next day I went right to the agency. I have texts, I have phone conversations, and I said, “This is unacceptable!” And I told them how -you know- I almost got violent, but I didn’t. And I said, “What are you going to do about this predator that you have roaming your hallways?” And -you know- I was told, “We are going to do everything in our power. We are going to handle this Terry. You’re right. It is unacceptable.” And then they disappeared. Nothing happened.

Look at the faces of the black men behind him it says it all.

This is real fucking infuriating. This shit isn’t funny. Fuck them and anyone who makes fun of Terry Crews speaking out and taking a stand.

Anonymous asked:

Is the shoplifting thing also valid for piracy? I'm curious.

I’m assuming this ask is in reference to this post, so based off of that:

It is a great question about how to apply the same consistent logic about relating to capitalism to a variety of different consumer goods -- or, indeed, if you can even consistently apply the same moral standards in any capacity to an ever-shifting realm of possible relationships with it.

Admittedly, I wouldn’t necessarily apply the same logic or the same set of rules when it comes to piracy of media because for me, the promotion of the dumpster diving philosophy is grounded far far more in its environmental than economic impact.  It’s hard to discuss the environmental implications of a business without discussing some of the economics of it as well, but my main motivators are almost always first and foremost: “is this the most environmentally friendly option that I have available to me?”

My goal is not to just possess the material good, but come into possession of it in the most sustainable, far-sighted method.  My choices, therefore, tend to be dictated by environmental factors before they are dictated by economic ones.  Sometimes my choices lead to supporting the economics I also wish to support, but sometimes they are at odds at what I might agree with economically.

Piracy of media tends to, at least for me, have greatly reduced my environmental impact in the media I consume, but it does potentially cause me not to financially support the content creators that I like a lot, and that’s a downside to it.  Now that streaming is much more prevalent, I try to use legal streaming whenever I can (though there is admittedly only so many times that Fox or NBC or AMC websites can lose the stream and rebuffer before I will lose my shit and just switch) but still tend to avoid any sort of purchase of a physical piece of media (excluding books, which I almost exclusively buy used, which does rub against my desire to financially support those who I one day wish to join, so that’s its own issue).

I suspect that the goal behind most of the shoplifting blogs is less economically ‘screwing over’ large corporations through removing some of their wares and shrinking their bottom line and more ‘engaging in a risky behavior for the thrill of it’, but regardless, shoplifting overall has a worse impact on the environment than does dumpster diving, so I’d still promote the latter.  Shoplifting causes shrink, which causes the company to reevaluate the stock of the store and often opt (even automatically) to refill those items that are in low supply with fresh ones from the warehouse, which likely have been manufactured in an unsustainable way in the first place.  The only way to trigger these companies to produce less (and therefore do less damage) is to not remove those products from the shelves at all, and let them learn that way where the market is trending.

I hope this answers the question?  In some ways, my thinking is a bit tangential to the original intent of the post, but I hope I was able to outline it in a way that makes some sense.

Nobody is obligated to accept your apology when it’s given. It hurts, and it’s hard, but it’s important to understand and deal with this. It’s something we all have to learn and go through. It’s a part of respecting one another as people. If someone doesn’t want your apology, respect their decision and back off. It’s okay to hope they forgive you, but it’s wrong to get angry with that person because you expect them to forgive you.

Apologies should not be given with the sole intention of getting that person to forgive whatever it is you’re apologizing for. They should be given because you genuinely regret hurting someone, and you get that you were wrong and want to do better. If you go into an apology fully expecting that person to forgive you - you’re already not off to a good start.

“Good people can still make bad decisions. They can still say no, and make little mistakes. Good people have holes in their personality. They have their own strengths and weaknesses. They are allowed to have flaws. And despite all of that, they are still good people.”

Things I love about this:

1) Explicitly bi woman played by bi actress gets lady love interest, and it’s played as adorable and a little hilarious and not weird and not titillating.

2) There are zero white people in this scene and it’s so normal on this show I almost missed that fact. (The other actor in this scene is Terry Crews)

3) All sapphics are useless around pretty women: confirmed

4) Gina Rodriguez is in a hoodie and a t-shirt and some comfy jeans and cute ankle boots.  Zero hyper sexualization/male gaze.  Still confirmed as gorgeous and sexy.

5) Color Me Badd is playing, which is legitimately what plays in my head when *I* see a pretty girl, so thank you for hitting my demographic super hard, show.
