I regret to inform you that Discord's new Terms of Service includes an arbitration clause. You can find it here https://discord.com/terms/#16. This clause includes an opt-out, which I have transcribed here:

You can decline this agreement to arbitrate by emailing an opt-out notice to arbitration-opt-out@discord.com within 30 days of April 15, 2024 or when you first register your Discord account, whichever is later; otherwise, you shall be bound to arbitrate disputes in accordance with the terms of these paragraphs. If you opt out of these arbitration provisions, Discord also will not be bound by them.

These clauses are underhanded ways that corporations seek to deprive you of your right to participate in class-action lawsuits and your right to a jury trial. (This does only apply to us users ,other people still spread the word though )

Bad news, @noodelzmop. Arbitration basically means that if you want to sue Discord for whatever reason, the dispute needs to be handled in house. Specifically, in their house. If you don't get this email out, you're basically signing away your right to legal recourse if they do criminally shitty stuff to you, like with the McDonalds app.

I have been told that emailing "I am confirming that as of the date of this email, I am choosing to opt out of binding arbitration to settle disputes with Discord." With the Email you used for your discord account is enough for the notice but take this with a grain of salt as this was not said by a lawyer

reiterating that this only applies to US users

THIRTY DAY LIMIT BTW. I suggest taking sixty seconds to fire off a quick email with op’s recommended text. I have no plans to sue discord but better safe than sorry

every time it comes up i see a wave of people rushing to update their references and it would avoid a lot of stress to start early!!

Folx, if you want to not accidentally reblog TERF posts (which people have asked me about before), here’s a quick list of how not to do that:

Go to your ‘blocked tags’ and add: terf safe, terfs please interact, gender critical, radfem, rad fem, tims, tifs – these are all common TERF tags, and if the OP has tagged the post that way, it’ll show up as ‘contains the tags’ and block you from seeing it unless you click through. Yes, even on mobile.

Slow down for a sec and look at usernames. I know, we don’t do that when we’re scrolling, and I am guilty of that too. If the username contains overt references to labia, vaginas, pussy, etc., if it contains matriarchy, if it contains ‘critical’ or ‘rad’, maybe click through real quick to see if you’re about to reblog something that’s coming from a TERF.

Look for the dogwhistles. This part has gotten long, so it’s going behind a readmore.

Putting this back up because hello new everyone, I am a trans person who would appreciate you taking a quick scroll through this post; download the shinigami eyes extension for your browser, and block some or all of the following tags, which will give you a heads up to take a closer look:

radical feminism radfem fabfem febfem gender critical terfsafe tra tim lgb drop the t

Obviously this is all a lot at once, but please just do a bit where you can. It helps our queer community be welcoming and inclusive for everyone when we de-platform exclusionists who make us all unsafe.

I encourage everyone to share this post, queer or straight or whatever.

Oh my gosh. I just found this website that walks you though creating a believable society. It breaks each facet down into individual questions and makes it so simple! It seems really helpful for worldbuilding!

Heads up that this is a very extensive questionnaire and might be daunting to a lot of writers (myself included). That being said, it is also an amazing questionnaire and I will definitely be using it (or at the very least, some of it).

Hot fandom discourse take but framing dark content as only being acceptable if its a vehicle for exploring personal trauma is just giving ground to the puritan segments of fandom.

Simply liking dark content for its own sake is perfectly fine.

It also opens the door for random strangers to interrogate people about their trauma to determine if they're "allowed" to write dark content, only to then most likely turn around and use that sensitive information against them anyways.

today i learned twitter artists are posting their own art but captioning it as if they're reposting someone else's work, bc it gives them waaay more engagement. and its worked every time. the state of social media is truly so over 😭

like what is going on...

from the perspective of a viewer, self-promotion conveys desperation. not even in art, either -- it's like glancing over someone's linkedin page and seeing two paragraphs of uninterrupted corporate jargon, basically impressing upon the viewer that "hey, i'm super good at this corporate lingo thing, pleeease please hire me!"

art is the same. in the top right image, the artist has jammed: (1) superfluous personal details ("been offline on vaca for the last few days"), (2) random visibility hashtags ("#PortfolioDay"), and (3) multiple fandom hashtags ("#zelda", "#totk", and "#TearsOfTheKingdom") in a limited tweet space. the overall message is "please, god, SOMEBODY look at my work." it makes the viewer uncomfortable and vaguely guilty, putting a sense of obligation into their engagement. it reminds one of a panhandler on the side of the road.

by contrast, pretending as if the work isn't yours totally gets rid of that impression. there's no subconscious "ugh" reaction from viewers, so they're less likely to scroll past it. this frees up emotional bandwidth for the viewer to judge the art on its own merits. this is critical on twitter -- the first two seconds' impression can make or break a post.

this is no more dystopian than any of the other million dirty tricks (outrage, fear, clickbait) people use to get attention online. the only thing surprising about it is that people haven't been doing it for longer.

The rules of the game are simple:

  • You go to geoguesser
  • You set it to world map
  • You go through locations, through multiple games, driving around those locations
  • Until you see a cow
  • When you find a cow, you win

would love to but apparently it's paid now and has ranked competitive and coins and bullshit

Results! Turns out there's a free site called OpenGuessr that's just the classic gamemode we all know and love, but you can just play it for free like normal.

And I found some large friends on my very first leap!

Congrats! You win. And thanks for the info on the free alternative
