Bucky groaned as he woke to Peggy getting out of bed and getting dressed. “What the hell, sweetheart? Where are you going? It’s too early. Come back to bed… no one else needs you right now… and if they do, they better deal with me first.” He reached out for her hand, trying to tug her back into bed with him.

“Harrison called. Their sending a car round. I have to go. Unless you want to call your friend off. “She said the last part teasingly

Bucky rolled his eyes. “Harrison’s an ass and you can tell him I said so.” He turned to his back snd sat up, the sheet dropping to his lap. “How long will you be out?”

“I don’t know. All he said was to bring some things to the office”she stated “your not letting me do this by myself. Are you?”she asked curiously to him “she heard a beep outside of the horn. She sighed as she went to the lock box and her 45 pistol and put int in her garter holster. And lowered her skirt.

“James I swear if you stop filling about and tell me what is going on. Your not making any sense. Of course I love you.”she said tiring of this dance. “If there is more just jar it out already.”she stated. Clearly flushed as her cheeks rose with blush

Bucky frowned softly. “I… I’m sorry. I… I don’t know how to make it anymore clear… I just… I wanted you to know that I love you. I feel like maybe you don’t know… that I don’t say it enough. I get busy, I get distracted, but.. I mean… that’s all I was tryin’ to say.” He glanced down at his plate for a moment before looking back at her. “Is something wrong? I mean, did you have a bad day at work or something cause you’re…. You’re not usually this snappy with me. Did… are you mad that I know the truth about what you do?”

“Kinda and your answer is. Yes. James of course. I would marry you if you were trying to find the words for that?”she said lighter a she knew the situation of what was going on , “I don’t really like surprises. But. Now that I know what you were trying to achieve. Yes. Of course I will”she stated honestly.

Bucky’s frown deepened slightly. “Uhm… okay? Good to know but I uh… it’s only been a couple of months… I wasn’t…” He reached for his water and took a drink. “Peggy, I think we’re on different conversations. I adore you and I love you but I’m not anywhere near ready to get married. I don’t have a whole lot to offer you and I’d want a better job before I proposed to you.”

She felt awkward and embarrassed. “I’m sorry I.”she got up. “Thank you for dinner. I’m. I think I’d better go. I’ll call you when I get back to the boarding house.” Sighing she reached down to the floor and she got her purse getting from her seat, she started for the door. She guess she would just walk home from here. Why was she so stupid. She was kicking herself right now for being so stupid. She guessed with his tone. She hated things that weren’t concrete. She hated situations like these. Unpredictable.

Bucky got up quickly, throwing down some bills on th table and heading out after her. “Peggy, wait!” He caught up with her and rested a hand on her arm. “Stop, please. You don’t need to apologize. I… it’s not that I don’t want to marry you, honey. I do at some point. but right now, I… I don’t have anything to offer you. I don’t have a house for us or a decent enough job that means I’ll be home at night and weekends to spend time with you. I’d want to have a good nest egg of savings, too, in case we ever want kids, honey. I love you. Don’t give up on me… please. I’m working on it. Times right now are just bad all around. But I wanna give us a good, strong start.”

Peggy was almost to the entrance of the restaurant when her hand was grabbed. She had almost punched him. Before seeing that it was indeed him. “James. I know your readjusting. And.”she knew the lie that the ssr had told her to keep about Steve starting another term in college. She couldn’t. Not tonight. “Alright. Can. Can I stay at your place tonight ?”

Time skip.

In the middle of the night she had heard his phone ring. She knew Harrison knew she was here tonight “Carter. “She heard they caught a multi super case. She sighed. “I will be on the way. “She said as she knew she had promised Bucky no more solo dangerous missions. Or at least with out him as partner. But this seamed classified.

She had tried to be quiet getting out of bed and going to the bathroom to get ready when she heard shuffling in the bed. “Go back to sleep it’s nothin”she lied trying to sneak out with out him worrying.

Sorry that is alright” she stated as she was working on thinking of how she would get back at the other for his apparent bar of protocol. “How. How was your day then ?”she asked curiously trying to take the subject off of herself.

Bucky hummed softly, finishing his bite before sitting down his fork. “It was a good day, honestly. Got a lot done at the docks. Steve can get to his next semester in art school, which will be a nice surprise for him. Ma and my sisters will be okay. I’ve got a boxing match on Saturday that, if I win, will earn me a good bit, too. Other than that, not a lot going on today for me.” He smiled across at her softly. “You know, I have missed ya, Peg. I know you’re busy and all but… I just…” He took a bite of his salad to gather his thoughts. When he swallowed he looked back over at her. “You an’ me… what is this for you? I mean… I guess you’re goin’ back to England at some point, right?”

She looked at him curiously. “I suppose at some point when my liaison with the you know what is complete. Yes. But for now here.”she stated honestly. “And of course I’m serious James.”she clenched her hand looking down. “Is there a reason why you would think otherwise ?”she wondered.

“What if I didn’t want ya to go back to England?” He asked quietly. “What if I wanted ya to stay here an’ maybe make a life with me in New York.” He took a shaky breath. Yeah, he was nervous. If she said no, that was it, and he didn’t know what he’d do. “I care about ya a lot, Peggy. More than I have anyone else before.”

She didn’t know what to think. “What are you saying James?”she asked curiously herself now.

She sighed as she was just furious with her colleague. As she herd his aspect about the salad. “Yes. Sorry that is alright” she stated as she was working on thinking of how she would get back at the other for his apparent bar of protocol. “How. How was your day then ?”she asked curiously trying to take the subject off of herself.

You would have thought, that after fighting in a world war, falling from a train, and being the subject of evil science experiments not once but twice, the second leaving him with a metal arm, that Bucky Barnes would no longer be afraid of anything. Well, that was a goddamn lie, because he was fairly sure he hadn't been so nervous since he'd had to admit to his ma as a seven year old that he'd accidentally broken her favourite vase playing ball in the house.

Looking up as Peggy entered, he felt his heart skip a beat, vaguely acknowledging Harrison, but his eyes never left her as he pushed himself to his feet and pulled her chair out for her, "Figured it would take extreme measures to get you to come out for dinner, Pegs."

“No, I...uh...I wanted to ask you something,” Bucky said quietly, chewing on his lower lip. He knew the significance of the date too. Granted, he hadn’t been around when Steve had crashed the plane. He’d been being dragged into the depths of the cold and the snow, but he’d found out. They’d used the headline to break him, and when he’d been rescued, it had only been confirmed.

Taking a deep breath, he slipped the little box out of his pocket with his metal hand, shifting out of his seat so that he could kneel in front of her.

Carter looked downward as she paused. “James. I.” She stopped as she looked at him as she was surprised and wanting to Have him get off the ground to be honest. She knew what the gesture was made. Proposal. All she could say was “Yes.”she paused as she moved her hand from her mouth out of shock. “Yes. I will marry you” she said to try to make the situation easier. As she knew the other could be more humble at times then he would want. She had seen this gesture once before from another. So she was familiar with the stance.

Thinking she had missed the interaction that the other had just done. “Alright.” She asked still suspicious about this whole event. Or what was going on here. They had seen each other for about three or so months and had even started with her spending more and more time at his place. Rather than the boarding house for women.

It had taken lots for her to be readjusted back to the building as the head caretaker still was eerily she suspicious of her after her close interaction of espionage last year had ended well enough with her back at the ssr after the entire situation resolved itself.

She had ordered a salad and a salmon as it was one of her favorite dishes here at the restaurant which they somewhat frequented. “I suppose. You know.” She paused as she had overheard Harrison and him talking about her one night he was over for a game night. “I guess I don’t have to use the phone company thing anymore. Do i.”she said hopefully as she knew though to keep an ear out for eavesdropping ears as her enemies had grown in numbers over the recent years. “Anyways. How was your day?” She asked not wanting to really give the topic much thought on the matter.

They’d only been seeing each other for a few months, and everything had been rather slow and tentative. After all, it had taken him a long time to come back to himself after the fall from the train, after the SSR had liberated him once more from the bowels of HYDRA, a metal arm in place of his flesh one and struggling to recall so much as his own name.

But Peggy had been a near constant figure the whole time, as the SSR had poked and prodded, as they’d evaluated what to do with him. The metal arm had been removed, replaced in time by a removable prosthetic of a similar caliber, but made by Stark. And bit by bit, his memories had come back to him, and he’d found himself, without warning, falling for her. 

And so they’d dipped into this relationship, spending more and more time together, and she’d even spent a few nights at his apartment. And it was why his flesh hand fidgeted a little with the small box in his pocket, “Pretty dull. They still keep prodding me with needles. Not sure what they think they’re gonna get outta me that’s different from last week.”

As the dinner progressed. He saw he was getting more and more nervous about something. “Do I have something in my hair or something “she asked trying to lighten the mood as she sighed, “James. Is everything alright?”she asked curiously as she wondered what was causing this shift in demeanor of the man she cared for since Steven’s passing. Not knowing there was an understanding if something should happen to him, he would take up the mantle.

And ironically it was four years to the day that Steve plummeted that plane into the ice in the artic. Ironic timing. She supposed. “James ?”she said a bit more concerned now.

She sighed as she was just furious with her colleague. As she herd his aspect about the salad. “Yes.
