I'm a bit of a multifandom and random lifeblogging blog. My interests tend to cycle depending on which fandom is most interesting/exciting at any point in time. This can be TV/Anime/Manga/Video Game etc. As for me-I'm 40 years old, live in Somerset in the South West of England and am a retail manager. I'm also asexual and aromantic which means I survive on OTPs because I cannot produce the necessary emotions myself! (Joking aside, I'm an absolute shipper and I'm unashamed of that fact).

Fun fact: ‘Mind how you go’ is a Terry Pratchett reference. Not only his last book, The Shepherd’s Crown, has this dedication to one of the characters, it’s the Pratchett family’s mantra for safety:

Her [Rhianna Pratchett’s] parents were living in Wiltshire, while she was based in London but they saw a lot of each other and spoke constantly. “I’m always telling them I love them on the phone in a slightly silly way. We always say to each other, ‘Mind how you go’; it’s almost like a Pratchett mantra for safety.”

with Rhianna, the daughter of Terry Pratchett, saying this as her last words to her father and her grandfather.

Me when I'm 18 hours into FFVII Rebirth and I'm still exploring the second open area instead of progressing the plot: okay, that's enough. Let's move on. You can come back and do the rest later.

Also me two hours later: I will repeat this parade on the hardest difficulty AS MANY TIMES AS IT TAKES until I get a great score.

(I tried to win the QB tournament...I really did...but I didn't really update my cards so the last two matches were too much)

I'm getting some more sleep now after like 22 hours into the game. Reached a good stopping point. But also reached a NO PLOT IS GOING TO PROGRESS FOR A BIT point.

FFXIV HEAVENSWARD

So I've just gotten second credits and finished this expansion with just over an hour til VII Rebirth is out in my timezone. And, wow, what an expansion it was. I made my post on ARR just over a month ago. And, yes, that means I managed to burn through this expansion in a month instead of the couple years it took me to get through ARR.

And I'm not going to say that it's because ARR is bad. It isn't. But it is overwhelming, especially for someone of my play style. And many of my delays were to do with not wanting to do Duty Finder stuff and procrastinating. I still don't love Duty Finder stuff, but it's less overwhelming when I have videos to watch and prepare with. And I'm feeling a lot more comfortable with the WHM lvl 60 kit than the lvl 30-50 kit. Trying to go back to the lvl30 dungeons without AOE heal/regen from medica II is horrible. But as for the story: OMG

Started the FFVII Rebirth Demo.

Found the piano.

Lost the next 20 minutes into getting a perfect score on the song.

My adventures in FFXIV: finally reached the end of ARR edition

So...a fair few years back I, a huge Final Fantasy fan but not so much a fan of MMORPGs, heard that the critically acclaimed MMORPG FFXIV was available on a free trial (up to level blah blah and including expansions etc insert rest of meme here). And I figured I would give it a shot.

I downloaded it to my PS4, made my character, stumbled my way through chosing a class, got lost a billion times, and then finally made it out of the city and to my first enemies...

Where, with my lack of understanding of the controls and mechanics, thought I'd accidentally attacked another player instead of the monster and insta closed the game in shame and dishonour.

(Back then I didn't know you COULDN'T attack another player outside of PVP and the player probably just teleported away with great timing)

I didn't touch the game for another year or two.

Basic rules for analysing fiction, an incomprehensive list jotted down in a hurry:

  1. The protagonist isn’t always right
  2. The protagonist isn’t always good
  3. The protagonist isn’t always written to be relatable or likeable
  4. The narrator isn’t always right
  5. The narrator isn’t always good
  6. The narrator isn’t always telling the truth
  7. The narrator isn’t always the author
  8. The protagonist’s moral compass, the narrator’s moral compass and the author’s moral compass are three entirely different things that only occasionally overlap
  9. Pay attention to what characters do and not just what they say
  10. Pay special attention when what the characters do is at odds with what they say
  11. A lot of the time the curtains are blue for a reason. If they aren’t, you should read better books

One more:

12. The antagonist isn’t always telling the truth

So many times I have seen people apparently just … forget that it’s possible for fictional characters to be (a) mistaken or (b) lying, and say things like “we know this to be true because [character] said so here” (or, worse, “this fact is canon because [character] said it”).

The antagonist isn’t always telling the truth, the protagonist isn’t always telling the truth, the secondary and minor characters aren’t always telling the truth, the narrator may be telling the truth but if the narrator is also a character in the story then don’t count on it.
