* …and so we sat, in the throes of 2020’s viral antagonist’s frisson,

little realizing it was just an overlay - a nascent, problematic spray of transmission;

while fading into gray a problem internalized, deployed, near normalized in this post-civil righteous hovel;

blanketing the void, as a gaping schism, none too novel;  an always annoying vestige of a racism

rimming an unmerited liberty of some too incensed to reckon the liminal boundary, too dense to beckon a seminal foundry

that’d make great any nation

should all cogs of the wheel be allowed just participation.

there’s no antidote for a inversed blessing not seen as a curse by those who’ve rehearsed by rote chapter & verse,

that window dressing called life, liberty, honest toil in happiness’ pursuit

that’s just a doilied lead overlay on a dinner tray still stocked with forbidden fruit. * 5/20 - lebuc - overlay

Ladybug losing its spot

Cat in need of a nap

Meek as a mouse

Deer in headlights

Dog chasing its tail

Peckish as a hen

On the range, in the wild

Captive and crazed...when I feel

Less than a functioning person

You resolutely yet soothingly

Say how you see me:

Beautiful, bright, strong

My own unique creature

Loving and lovable

Humming with humanity

When caterwauling and wailing

Amplify, clawing at myself

How hearteningly helpful

To be reminded of who I am

At heart

If it only matters to you

Then it doesn't really matter

Or at least that's what others

Have trained you to believe

Well believe me, it matters

Because you do and anything

You assign meaning to

Is meaningful since you are a

Deep well of thoughts and feelings

Interests, fears, and hopes

Whether still or churning

So much happening beyond

Whatever surface you show

To the world--more than

A mere reflective source

You and what matters to you

Are no less significant

Than those who shrilly shout

Over everyone else

The Scorpion and the Frog

A scorpion, which cannot swim, asks a frog to carry it across a river on the frog's back. The frog hesitates, afraid of being stung by the scorpion, but the scorpion argues that if it did that, they would both drown. ... Midway across the river, the scorpion stings the frog anyway, dooming them both. The frog says why did you do that? The scorpion replied, because it is in my nature.

I got this old tale from the show AFTERLIFE which is written, produced, and directed by RICKY GERVAIS.

Great show if you like British dark comedy, which I really like.

Happy frog Friday Jennifer

Happy Friday!  Hope you have an artsy great frog day…just like this little guy earlier this week.  I found him hanging out on the solar panel of this outdoor light….and the next day a different all green frog was resting there…must be a comfy spot! Hope you all have a good weekend!

Dusty, delicate roses

Radiance glowing through

Too bad you can't see

You are unequivocally

Lovely even when feeling

Overlooked, battered by

The elements of life

Rain and hail pelting; colors

Melting in high sun, drooping

Pieces dropping one by one

Learn all the facets of you

Beyond the eye-catching bloom

Tacitly approve every

Other component, root

To tiptop and respect

The pivotal role of each

Beauty of their being

Belonging to you, proving

You do not have to be picked

To be appreciated and adored

That can happen exactly--

In fact can start--

Where you are

@writerscreed prompt 179: open your eyes

———-

I wake up before dawn, at 4 AM. I close my eyes and try to go back to sleep, without success.

I give up, get dressed, and get into the car for a drive.

As I back out of my parking space, a sportscaster on the radio says, “I think they’ll be able to get back to baseball soon.”

I merge onto the freeway and head north. There are few other vehicles on the road. I pass an old station wagon filled with boxes and plastic bags. Someone moving, perhaps?

At mile marker 78.2, a tow truck’s lights flash as it pulls a car with a bashed-in front fender onto its bed. A man wearing shorts stands behind the vehicles, talking on his cell phone.

At exit 81, I can see the neon logo of the Shining Star Casino. The sign’s message board says, “Closed for Now. Stay Safe!!”

I pass a tractor trailer whose side exclaims, “This Truck Carries America’s Best Burgers”. I ate at one of the company’s restaurants before, in Texas. I was not impressed.

The sun begins to rise. I pull off the freeway, into the John Rogers Memorial Rest Stop. I tie my bandanna across my face.

Inside, the watered-down instrumental version of an ‘80s New Wave hit plays on the building’s speakers. I pour French Vanilla coffee into a cup that reads, “Open Your Eyes With Jolt Java”.

The cashier is wearing a green mask decorated with glazed donuts. He asks, “How are you doing, my friend?”

“Okay, you?”

He gives a thumbs up. “Off in an hour. Doing good.”

I pay with my card. The display asks, “Would you like to donate a dollar to the American Child Fund?”

I click the red “No”.

Once outside, I put my bandanna into my pocket. The parking lot is empty, except for three crows, gathered around a puddle. They stare at me as I lean on the front of my car and sip my coffee.

I watch the cars and trucks speed by on the freeway. When I tire of this, I get in my car and continue north.
