I gamify word counts.

Here, have my custom template that I actually use. Because gatekeeping resources is wack.

I sometimes write up to 4,000 words a day for my day job, and then I’ll sit down in the evening and write more.

I'm able to make this work (for me, just for me, most of the time) because I've discovered that I can trigger dopamine hits with visual cues like colors and a progress chart.

So I made this word count tracker.

It's nothing too fancy, but it's got pretty, live-updating colors, a chart that tracks my progress, I can set a goal if I have one. I keep one of these in almost every writing project folder.

It works really well for me, and it helps me when I'm feeling freaked out by a word count or a blank page.

Just Input your word count goal and your word count by day. That’s it. It’ll track your progress, color it in by weight (so satisfying), and you’ll see the graph get closer and closer to your goal.

PSA: Tumblr/Wordpress is preparing to start selling our user data to Midjourney and OpenAI.

you have to MANUALLY opt out of it as well.

to opt out on desktop, click your blog ➡️ blog settings ➡️ scroll til you see visibility options and it’ll be the last option to toggle.

to opt out on mobile, click your blog ➡️ scroll then click visibility ➡️ toggle opt out option.

if you’ve already opted out of showing up in google searches, it’s preselected for you. if you don’t have the option available, update your app or close your browser/refresh a few times. important to note you also have to opt out for each blog you own separately, so if you’d like to prevent AI scraping your blog i’d really recommend taking the time to opt out. As others have noted, the opt out option does not guarantee that wordpress hasn’t already sold this data to train AI before the opt out option was given to us.

Yes, you should opt out, but this is not a protection of our data or the contents of our posts. Opt out does not protect deactivated blogs, abandoned blogs, and blogs whose owner is deceased, among others. And do not for a moment think that AI companies will honor this opt out option retroactively.

They’ve already been taking your data, they’re just telling us about it now. If this is something that upsets you as much as it does me, please go to tumblr support and leave your feedback about this situation. While you should be direct, please be polite and mindful that most staff members are not involved in this decision. They can only communicate users unhappiness with it.
