i keep seeing all the rich (mostly white) kids from my uni go to Cabo MX on their insta stories and its really starting to bother me

like I get it, you wanna do touristy things, go ahead i do them too. you want to get away, i get it, I do that too.

but don't go to my country and only stay at the resort/hotel. engage with my culture, my history, my people. I want you to stop hanging out with the friends you know from home/school and at least try to learn something about the country youre in apart from the fact that it has the resort youre in

I was just in mexico celebrating my grandpa's 80 birthday with so many extended family members, but its not a tourist spot, far from it, so of course no one cares. its not flashy, and its not supposed to be. its hot, its gritty (the city is mostly lower middle class, a big change of pace for those visiting Cabo), but most importantly its authentic. its real. there is no better way to learn the way of life, the culture, fuck even the language, than being with people in their day to day lives.

i hate seeing people use their stay in my homeland as a status symbol.

maybe im projecting a little, maybe im being too harsh, but I cant help but feel that theyre making my country and culture into a social commodity. if they wanted a beach resort there are plenty in the US, but they chose mexico specifically for reasons I dont know.

but maybe thats because I hate seeing rich people my age, idk. but yeah, fuck that shit i dont like it

idk maybe I let myself get too entrenched in the present moment, but regardless I tend to forget to check in with friends I havent talked to in a bit

trying to be better about it but I still feel pretty bad

i dont want them to think I don't care about them anymore
