Eight years later, an update on anyone who has become
First, the bad news: as basically everyone's figured out by now, given that we're eight years (!) out from when I started writing it, I won't be finishing anyone who has become in its original form. As much as I wish I had, too much time's gone by for me to return to a Grace and Frankie headspace, and I have other commitments that have taken me away from fanfic for the foreseeable future (hopefully not forever).
Second, the great news: in a sense, I will actually be finishing the fic, because—
anyone who has become is going to be published!
In 2026, Ylva Publishing will release my second sapphic romance, The Second Draft, which is a reworking of anyone who has become. Much of the fanfic has survived, including the central coming-out arc and the main character's relationship with her daughters/ex-husband, as well as most of the pivotal scenes ("how did you know?", spinning in the desert, etc). Emotionally, it's functionally the same story.
Of course, I've had to make some major changes, too—the book has to be an original work—which means that the Frankie character is, in many respects, very different in this version. But, like Frankie, Sadie is warm, larger than life, charismatic, and provides a much-needed counterbalance to icy, repressed Anne. Sadie is also way less wacky and caricature-like than Frankie, which I think translates a lot better to original fiction. Honestly, I think she improves on the original.
Writing anyone who has become quite literally changed my life. It gave me the confidence I needed to know I could write a full novel. It was a major stepping stone on the long path that brought my now-wife and me together (believe it or not, today is our third wedding anniversary!). And the comments and messages I received from readers touched me beyond my capacity to describe it—especially those of you who told me this fic helped you on your own coming-out journeys. I was then, and continue to be, immensely grateful that something I wrote could be part of your path.
Grace and Frankie fandom: thank you, thank you, thank you. The Second Draft would not exist without you. If you decide to read it once it's released, I hope you think it does justice to the original. I'm very proud of it, and so glad that I can bring such an important chapter in my life to the proper close it deserves.
