Eight years later, an update on anyone who has become

First, the bad news: as basically everyone's figured out by now, given that we're eight years (!) out from when I started writing it, I won't be finishing anyone who has become in its original form. As much as I wish I had, too much time's gone by for me to return to a Grace and Frankie headspace, and I have other commitments that have taken me away from fanfic for the foreseeable future (hopefully not forever).

Second, the great news: in a sense, I will actually be finishing the fic, because—

anyone who has become is going to be published!

In 2026, Ylva Publishing will release my second sapphic romance, The Second Draft, which is a reworking of anyone who has become. Much of the fanfic has survived, including the central coming-out arc and the main character's relationship with her daughters/ex-husband, as well as most of the pivotal scenes ("how did you know?", spinning in the desert, etc). Emotionally, it's functionally the same story.

Of course, I've had to make some major changes, too—the book has to be an original work—which means that the Frankie character is, in many respects, very different in this version. But, like Frankie, Sadie is warm, larger than life, charismatic, and provides a much-needed counterbalance to icy, repressed Anne. Sadie is also way less wacky and caricature-like than Frankie, which I think translates a lot better to original fiction. Honestly, I think she improves on the original.

Writing anyone who has become quite literally changed my life. It gave me the confidence I needed to know I could write a full novel. It was a major stepping stone on the long path that brought my now-wife and me together (believe it or not, today is our third wedding anniversary!). And the comments and messages I received from readers touched me beyond my capacity to describe it—especially those of you who told me this fic helped you on your own coming-out journeys. I was then, and continue to be, immensely grateful that something I wrote could be part of your path.

Grace and Frankie fandom: thank you, thank you, thank you. The Second Draft would not exist without you. If you decide to read it once it's released, I hope you think it does justice to the original. I'm very proud of it, and so glad that I can bring such an important chapter in my life to the proper close it deserves.

Hi! I hope this is okay, but I just wanted to drop by and say that I love you! Haha.

I’ve been a fan since the early days on ff.net and I’ve reread your fics many a times. Recently I’ve been in the position to be able to FINALLY buy all your published works (except Carlisle book 3 - it’s out of stock 😩), and it’s been so fun to read your stories in actual physical book format! It has brightened my spirits immensely and I just wanted to come say thank you!!! This year has been crazy and you’ve inadvertently made it a little more bearable.

I see you’ve got a massive story in the works and I’m super amped! The artwork looks amazing. Will it be available on Amazon? We’ve recently gotten Amazon in South Africa so I really hope I’ll be able to buy it. If I have to, I’ll find a way to get it imported - I’m that invested!

Anyway, I hope you have an amazing year and I look forward to supporting you for years to come. You’re an amazing writer and I hope you get reminded of that often. 💕

Have a lovely day!

Thank you so much! This is very kind of you :D

Yes, The Woman from the Waves will be available as an ebook on Amazon. Only on Amazon, in fact, since Kindle Unlimited is basically an indie author's only hope of breaking even, and I'm publishing this book independently. However, the paperback and hardback will be available to order through other platforms as well.

I really appreciate your support!

Taking this opportunity to exercise my wife privilege and promote @telanu's new book, The Woman from the Waves, which in my educated opinion—as someone who's been reading her work for fifteen years—is the best thing she's ever written.

It's an epic sapphic romantasy set in the Orkney Islands, about Madeleine, a nun who's saved from drowning by a mysterious woman. Madeleine returns to Orkney years later, after leaving her convent, to find her rescuer. Instead, her search is disrupted by Hæra, a brazen, provocative local who awakens Madeleine's long-repressed desires—and who keeps a secret out of myth.

What makes TWFTW so remarkable? It's a big book, and not just in terms of its length (600 pages!). @telanu's story, at its broadest, is about what it takes to leave behind the safety of everything you've ever known to choose the life you never realized you needed. There's sheep farming. Catholic trauma (boy, is there). The weirdest meet cute you've ever read. Found queer family. Stunning cliffs over turbulent seas. Intense lesbian yearning. Scorching sex scenes (come on, it's @telanu, you knew this already). Feral possessiveness. And a mythological creature from Scottish folk legend who turns out to be very, very real.

You'll laugh. You'll cry—I did, a lot. And you'll fall in love with Madeleine, Hæra, and their world.

The Woman from the Waves is out in early June! Keep an eye on @telanu's socials for more details (she's @/writingroslyn everywhere) or, better yet, sign up for her free newsletter to get the first look at the cover release and sample chapters in April. Newsletter subscribers also get a free steamy novella!

I'll leave you with this absolutely stunning art of Madeleine and Hæra @telanu commissioned, by Charlie Utting:

Gosh!!! I would be remiss to say this book would not be happening AT ALL without the love and support of @ellydash who refused to let me give up on it and helped me every step of the way over the TWO+ YEARS it took me to finish. <3333333

Hi there! I recently watched Conclave and loved it - I'm curious if you've read the novel, and if you would recommend it? I'm also here for Lawrence/Benitez

I haven’t, but it’s on my library hold list! Loving Lawrence/Benitez.

I have no time to write fic but fr fr I would love to see a Conclave fic that characterizes Benitez as a badass who can handle himself in the Vatican from the get-go without Lawrence holding his hand.* He’s a sweetie pie, but mfer also survived multiple war zones while hiding several big secrets.

You might be saying that surviving war zones is different from navigating politics, and I’m not saying being pope wouldn’t be REALLY STRESSFUL, but think about how much politicking and maneuvering and backchanneling he’d already have had to do!! Just to make it out alive and keep those around him safe. He might still be idealistic, but he can’t be naive. The right fic could plausibly have him running rings around the schemers who’ve never had to fight for their lives, with a gentle smile on his face the whole time because he’s still a good soul in spite of it all.

Bonus points if the fic includes Lawrence trying to ~protect him and Benitez tolerating it because he likes the repressed idiot who can’t open a Ziploc bag.

*I ship them like burning don’t get it twisted

Gay people can't flirt normally it's always gotta be "I don't want your vote!" "Nevertheless, you have it." or some shit like that
