🚩Cult and cultlike/toxic behavior: red flags in fandom 🚩

A non-exhaustive list inspired by my 10+ years of experience in fandom, both personal and second-hand. By sharing this, I hope to make other people more aware and able to protect themselves in the future. No fandom space or friend group is worth your mental health.

  • They claim they have secret information and use that to lure you in
  • They might either lovebomb you at first or make you (feel like you have to) prove your worth
  • The leader(s) of the group might not feel super approachable, at least not without fear of saying the wrong thing
  • They seem to create or point out a divide in fandom you’d never noticed before. Likely this divide isn’t actually there in wider fandom, or the need for it is wholly unnecessary.
  • They create an us vs them (outsiders) situation. Their group has the most knowledge and expertise, if others critique them it’s simply cause they must’ve heard false rumors. They are always the ones who are “misunderstood”.
  • Questioning statements from leaders/people with high regard in the group, is not without risk. You can get dogpiled, your intelligence put into question and gaslit about your own words and feelings.
  • You see discussions happen and get more heated, and at the end of that discussion the person on the receiving end of the things mentioned above ^ starts apologizing profusely and/or believes they are indeed stupid. However, if this person does keep defending their stance, they might get bullied or kicked out of the server/group chat
  • Too much emphasis on Being Right/having the correct take or theory – it may seem it has a higher priority than empathy and tactful communication
  • You need to have an opinion (their opinion), because silence equals condoning or agreeing with the “other side”
  • Everything is a moral issue. When everything is made out to be a high-stakes issue or reflective of everyone as a person, it's easier for the leader(s) to manipulate you.
  • You find yourself excusing people’s behavior because you agree with their point. The way they bring their argument forward and the tone they use, become subordinate to finding out the truthTM There is such a thing as The TruthTM in every theory, discussion or analysis
  • There is a lot of conspiratorial thinking – maybe actors are trying to send us secret messages, maybe there is a Whole Lot You Don’t Know But We Do, Trust Us, maybe this or that person in fandom has tried to attack us and are planning a bigger attack,…
  • You barely/don’t have fandom friends outside of this group and if you do, you tend to intentionally (whether subconsciously or not) hide your experience from them. They wouldn’t understand the way they talk, they wouldn’t understand the way it works etc
  • They want to know a lot of your personal information. - might only happen once you get into higher ranks
  • You might get (more and more) specific “tasks”, it starts becoming a part-time job instead of a hobby/fun space to hang out with friends

Of course, these red flags are not always immediately visible let alone advertised when you join a group chat/discord server/twitter or tumblr bubble. They can also be nonexistent at first and show up later. Here are some general ways to stay vigilant:

  • Periodically check in with your values, if they might be changing & how you feel about that.
  • Keep an eye on the way people (and yourself) are being treated. Is it kind? Is it fair? Do you feel on edge all the time when you’re having conversations? Is your body more tense when you’re in this online space or when certain people are around? Be honest with yourself here.
  • Ask yourself: Is this space becoming my only coping mechanism? Am I spending too much time here? There’s no shame in spending a lot of time on things you enjoy, but do check in with yourself sometimes whether you are actually still having fun and if you are taking things too seriously or parasocialising a lot.

There's a lot of fun to be had in fandom and a lot of good that comes out of it - don't forget that. Keep seeking that. It's why we're here!

April - Beleg x Mablung

Ah, my dear @lycheesodas has requested these goodest of good boys, and it was, as ever, a pleasure and a joy to write them.

Have some extra sassy Lúthien and some Thingol-love to go with it <3

Pairing: Beleg x Mablung

Prompts: Jazz Age, Furniture, Dancing

Words: 2k

Warnings: Crossdressing, period-appropriate reference to homophobia, alcohol

“Here again, huh?” Pushing back a loose strand of her silken, dark hair from her fair brow, Lúthien gave Beleg a broad, teasing grin. “If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were addicted to my singing!”

The patron rolled his eyes and gave an overdramatic sigh.

“And you do know better?” he asked then, waving down a waiter to order another round for them.

“Hmmm,” she hummed melodiously. “You could simply ask him out, you know?”

Hi! I was wondering if you might want to talk about your Tolkien blorbo of blorbos? Who's your fave and why? 💖

AAAAAAH...Oooof, that is a hard one for me lol

If I can cheat, I'd say Ori the Dwarf, because I've written almost 100 stories about him.

He has no real presence in the book and very few lines in the subsequent movie, so I pulled all of the characterisation out of my ass.

If we're talking actual characters with a canon personality, I'd say Caranthir (which is NOT much better), because he's lonely, grumpy, and irritable. I feel that. SO MUCH.

He's very middle child, forgotten nerd...and I love him.

Nevertheless, it is known that I have a soft spot for many characters. The Valar AND the Ñoldor. The Fëanorians AND Thingol. Gothmog AND Fingon. Melkor AND Maedhros. The Elves AND the dwarves.

In short, my favourite blorbos are my friends' favourite blorbos, and I am willing to listen to anyone and everyone (almost) talk about their favourites.

So...who's yours? I'm sure that you can do better than simply wave your pudgy arms and huff cluelessly (I'm such a mess, sorry).

What?! Hey! Turnabout is fair play?

I'm not sure I can do better honestly. I think my faves tend to fall into three categories.

  1. Women (Indis, Miriel, Nerdanel, Aredhel, Galadriel, Findis, Lalwen, Nienor, Finduilas, Melian, Luthien). I just think they are neat and we should build things around them more.
  2. Overlooked (Gwindor, Cirdan, any character that stayed in Aman - so Finarfin, Mahtan, etc. - sneaking TROP character Adar in here)
  3. Unpopular because they are antagonists of the Feanorians (the Valar, Thingol, Maeglin, Turgon, etc.)

Mmm. Maybe secret fourth thing (popular faves in the fandom): Elrond, Maedhros, Bilbo

Thank you for asking back <3

Ha! You actually really didn't do much better and that comforts me looool

Finarfin is such a darling! On board with that...On board with category 3 too. As for category 1, I'm a bit picky lol but I love writing women :D

Your fanfic tells me you make a good dom cause you care about others

Avatar

Okay...@cilil come here and help me!

I am not sure what to say to that LOL I...would I? Would I make a good dom?

I am a very small, soft-looking woman...But I have piercings and tattoos, I love wearing black, and I am a teacher by trade, so I am good at barking out orders...

If I wasn't required to actually hurt or humiliate anyone (Shame is the poison of life, but this is not the time or place for that rant)...I could. I'd be a tad too gentle maybe at the beginning :D

(But I'd make sure to be meticulous about aftercare, have snacks ready, and I give amazing comforting cuddles).

This is the first time someone said I'd make a good dom because I am caring, but you know what? I'll take it :D

I've had a rotten day, and this made me feel a little better.

Thank you @saintstars <3

rare pair bingo
⸙ Prompt: Spin the bottle | Caranthir x Finrod ⸙ Synopsis: Caranthir hates party games. Finrod may be able to change his mind. ⸙ Warnings: Cousins kissing (in case you weren't aware) ⸙ Quadrupe drabble

Whoever had come up with this silly game, Carnistir didn't remember, but he knew he loathed them for it.

First his brothers had dragged him to this strange, semi-secret meeting of various young Elven lords and ladies, attended by their cousins as well, and then he had been forced to participate in whichever asinine activities came to mind.

The game in question was based on the simple and rather witless premise of sitting around an empty bottle placed on the floor which was spun around to determine the group's next victim, and it had steadily been devolving from demanding the disclosure of personal secrets and completing embarrassing little tasks to a plain and direct "who kisses who" version.

Awwwwww my boy ♥️♥️🤪
