One of the worst things is when an author introduces a female character who’s a tomboy or doesn’t like wearing dresses or skirts or whatever and doesn’t, just, let them exist and be butch. They always have to have every event surrounding this character be related to what a Deficient Woman she is. This isn’t even about whether or not the author agrees with that, it’s that nearly none of them can conceive of creating a story around a non-feminine woman where it isn’t an aspect.
Prime example is the obligatory ball scene. If you actually wanted to write and celebrate a GNC female character you have so many options- suits, military uniforms, and so on. Creating a contrived situation where the character’s personal desires for her appearance are denied is, in addition to being cliched on the level of a murderous butler tying a princess to train tracks, a sign that you still can’t conceive of this character not performing traditional femininity even if you’ve written her as someone who doesn’t want to.

Does anyone else have those cliches that always show up that they’re just so tired of Like how whenever there’s a tomboy character in a story there’s always gonna be a ball scene or a party or whatever so the writers have an excuse to show her in a dress, and it’s been done so many times and it just never adds anything For once can we please have the characters just go with the obvious solution of “wear a suit”? Don’t go with the cliche, make the lesbians happy, do it.
