Scientists at UC Riverside have demonstrated a new, RNA-based vaccine strategy that is effective against any strain of a virus and can be used safely even by babies or the immunocompromised.  Every year, researchers try to predict the four influenza strains that are most likely to be prevalent during the upcoming flu season. And every year, people line up to get their updated vaccine, hoping the researchers formulated the shot correctly. The same is true of COVID vaccines, which have been reformulated to target sub-variants of the most prevalent strains circulating in the U.S. This new strategy would eliminate the need to create all these different shots, because it targets a part of the viral genome that is common to all strains of a virus. The vaccine, how it works, and a demonstration of its efficacy in mice is described in a paper published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.  “What I want to emphasize about this vaccine strategy is that it is broad,” said UCR virologist and paper author Rong Hai. “It is broadly applicable to any number of viruses, broadly effective against any variant of a virus, and safe for a broad spectrum of people. This could be the universal vaccine that we have been looking for.”

i get people don’t like to pay for things that were once free. but paying people fairly and making a survivable living while making cool things is HARD. even with ads. i think what the fellows are cooking up will be well worth it tbh!!!

respectfully, if the company cannot be sustained with the current number of employees and the desired output of content, the business model needs to be re-evaluated. a lot of people (myself included) were already paying for the free content via patreon. asking people to shell out even more money (a ridiculous amount considering how little content watcher puts out per month btw) is really tone deaf and out of touch considering the usa is in an economic recession. maybe you all at the company haven't been feeling this effect and feel like $6 per month is not a lot to ask, but that tells me that you guys can afford to take some pay cuts. this doesnt even touch on the struggle for international fans where $6 USD is NOT cheap in a lot of different currencies.

everyone has been complaining about the subscription model paywall for media for the last 5+ years. hundreds of thousands of people can barely afford their rent or groceries, have to ration their medicine, and have to beg on the internet for help paying their bills. homelessness is at an all-time high. cost of living keeps going up while wages stay stagnant. it's hard not to see this streaming service venture as a greedy move, all things considered.

i fully understand not wanting to be restricted by sponsorships and advertisers. watcher is not unqiue in that struggle. pretty much every youtuber that relies on sponsorships understands and probably wishes they could afford to make their content without it. but theres a reason nobody has tried to offset that cost of production entirely on their viewers. and nobody else has made that move after teasing a BiG cHaNgE like its something for everyone to be excited about. yall really said "get ready everyone, you now have to pay (some of you, even more) for the content youve been enjoying for years for free!" It genuinely blows my mind that you guys really expected this to go over well. The paying for the content isn't the part most people are upset about- its the fact that the cost you're asking for is unreasonable, the fact that most watcher supporters have never been here for the production value and do Not care about it whatsoever, and the fact that watcher seems extremely disconnected from their audience who at this point have been supportive and loyal. it was one thing to ask us to follow from one yt channel to another. this is something different entirely.

its going to be even harder to pay employees considering watcher has now lost half of their patrons on patreon, the yt subscriber count has gone down for the first time ever (yall were on a steady upward trajectory too!!) and continues to drop, and people on every platform are talking about what a terrible business move this is. there is no sustainable way for you guys to move ahead with this without significant reconsideration of finances and trying to win back your audience. i really hope this isnt the end of watcher nor the end of shane and ryan's careers. i'm holding out hope that this decision will be walked back and reconsidered. if it isnt, then i hope the loss of income, the trust in the fanbase, and everything built over the last 4 years was worth it.

If the link fails, relevant information: Squatting is not, strictly speaking, illegal in Australia. If the doors are locked and they break it it's breaking and entering, and if the owner asks them to leave and they don't it's trespassing, but if the property looks abandoned, the doors are unlocked, and the owner hasn't shown up to say no, you can move in. And if you manage to stay there for 12 years (or 15 in Victoria), adverse possession, or squatters' rights, kicks in and you can file claim to the house.

Basically, what he's doing is completely legal because squatting laws were specifically put in place to avoid people making empty houses for profit, and rich people are upset and calling him a far-left criminal activist for telling people things they don't want them to know.
