Given that, almost a year after the end of SU, the fanbase has been shrinking, COVID is still ever-present, and my personal life is busy, a zine will NOT be held.

I do apologize for this decision. I did want to host one, but due to these circumstances, it would be difficult to keep up with a schedule and keep interest in the project. :( I don’t want to cause delays in the project like I did last time. Thank you all for waiting patiently for an update and for following me when another project was being discussed. I wish you all the best in your future artistic and zine endeavors!

Uncertainty About Hosting a Zine (opinions wanted)

Hello everyone! It’s been a year and three days since I last posted. I will make this quick. When Steven Universe ended, I knew I wanted to do two things: host a final gemsona art event on my blog, and host a zine. However, I am reconsidering the zine because of the following:  1. The Corona Virus has made everyone’s lives go completely sideways and upside down. A lot of people are finding themselves very creative, or very much creatively blocked and run down from the stress and isolation. As quarantine drags on and different states/countries are flipping between opening and closing, I am not certain that people will find the inspiration and motivation to participate, especially when school comes around again (see next point). 2. The entire announcement time and creation period would go until the winter. This would be a busy time for students, especially with the new schooling formats due to the virus. Holidays would also take up the time a person may have to make art and/or write. 3. I know other SU zines have done charity and for-profit zines, but I worry about the legalities surrounding the sale of products containing pre-existing characters. I will do more research into this as I want there to be digital merch as well. 4. I am entering my senior year of college. I know that I have to make a cover page and possibly make merch to help with sales for the charity zine. I’m worried about rushing these important things and the quality coming out poorly, or pushing them off because of other priorities. I want to host a zine or SOMETHING, but I don’t know how much traction I will gain with the show’s end and the virus’ toll on everyone’s lives. I want to create a bigger project for us to be proud of, but I don’t know how successful it will be. I will figure something out. If not a zine, maybe a calendar, or screen backgrounds, or a recipe book, or stories with matching artwork, or a mix of things! Maybe it will be strictly SU and SUF, or include gemsonas, or only be gemsonas. I don’t know, but if you feel some way strongly, please do leave me a message on this post, my chat, or send an ask to my inbox. Thank you so much for reading.

Any other responses? I need to make a decision this month.

Hello! I think A Gemsona zine is a lovely idea: a big sendoff for a show people loved enough to place themselves and their creations in. And I would absolutely apply!

Thank you for your input! If there is a zine, it will be open to all people to join. No applications.

The Gemsona Zine will be... a Charity Zine!

The Charity Zine option won with 44 votes while the Free Zine received 40 votes. It was quite a close race! This Charity Zine will feature canon Steven Universe characters alongside gemsonas/SU OCs created by the fandom. At a later date, a charity will be chosen through a poll and a character claim list will be opened. Everyone is allowed to participate in this zine! Follow for updates!

@korbensdeliveryservice That's a great idea! I think people can donate more money on Gumroad even if there is a set price? I will have to check it out. I don't plan for the zine to cost too much. It will depend on the amount of pages, but at most the zine will be 7 US dollars. I'm thinking that it's going to be more between 3 to 5 US dollars though.

Steven Universe Gemsona Zine: Free, or for Charity?

Gemsona Zine 2019 will be happening, but before a theme is chosen, we must decide if this zine will be free or need payment to view. Please read the description of each option before voting, thank you!**For both zines, there will be no applications. Everyone is free to join so long as they follow the chosen theme and guidelines! What is a gemsona? A gemsona is an original character inspired by both the cartoon, Steven Universe, and real life gemstones and minerals. FREE Zine: This zine is free of charge and you will not have to pay money to view it. This zine will feature gemsonas as the focal point, but allow for contributors to include canon Steven Universe characters if they so desire. CHARITY Zine: This zine will require you to pay a small amount of money to view it. All proceeds will be donated to a charity. No contributor or moderator will profit from this zine. However, contributors will receive a free PDF file link as compensation for their submission(s). This zine will require zine contributors to include canon Steven Universe characters alongside their gemsona(s). There will be a character claim list to prevent favoritism. In addition, months after sales have closed, a free PDF of the zine will be available to view as I would not want the hard efforts of the contributors to be forgotten.

Ideas for the Next SU Gemsona Zine Project

I'm considering doing a Steven Universe Gemsona charity zine- a zine where all of the profits made off of the zine go to a charity organization. However, given that these are just our OCs, I would have to require incorporating the canon cast into the zine alongside gemsonas. I was thinking of an idea where the theme is "Steven and Friends" ('friends' being our gem OCs). It could still be free for all to join, but I would have to make a character claims list to avoid character favortism. In addition, some of the formating and deadlines will have to be stricter to make this project get out faster. Participants would be given a link to the PDF for free while others have to pay.

Another idea is having another free (no cost) zine that's open to all to join. The theme could come from my old poll and I could either repoll those themes or pick the second place theme from last time (which was just 'no specific theme').

Thoughts? I know some people were curious about another zine and I am interested in hosting again. I hope to have a theme decided on by the end of April if people want to participate during the summer.
