i just think it's cute how kaname is surrounded by his usual yuuki/yume roses but in the space between kaname, yuuki & ai, hino drew 9 orchids for the kurans 😩💖😭

You ship Yume right? What do you think about Zero/Zeki? Will they be canon in your rewrite fanfic?

oh dear, dear anon, you opened a can of worms.  Buckle up, bc this will be a RIDE.

(This got so long, I am so sorry)

So, let’s start with a ‘’trivia’’ so to say; my favourite arc, will always be the very first one up to chapter ~~ 50.  And I’ll tell you why - Both main relationship had the best potential and exploration up to this point.  ( Also besides the point but the potential for the world building, the mystery, the ‘’gothic’’ aesthetic was truly at its peak in its first arc.....just. the potential it all has. [chefs kiss]) Hell, I even admit it, that during the first Arc Z/Y was VERY appealing.I liked them together, quite a lot actually. The out most yearning between them, the way Hino portrait it - It was perfect, I could very much see these two be together by the end of it in the first arc, mind you - And I pretty much like Zero! His Character is interesting even if, he is really aggressive and closed off, but with his background it makes sense.  I loved him until a certain point, and I can see why he hated all Vampires and wanted to kill them all - Not to be all psychological lol, but he coped by putting everything into his anger thus his anger issues were born and this is also why he started to hate himself - He is the one thing he wants to kill the most, he wants to die etc etc  ( This all will definitely appear in the rewrite btw. I will explore this 100%) I like that - He is a very troubled and hurt Character, I wanted to see him change and overcome that, I wanted him to accept himself - But he never did.

At some point it become clear to me that his Character is somehow on a standby mode? And some other points started to surface up which made me......

Now lets go back to Z/Y.

In the manga.......at some point, the two lost its spark so to speak. Also, it is probably just me, but Yuuki has....almost no chemistry with Zero and heck even Zero has more chemistry with Kaname in the room because of the rivalry tension they had going on. OR HE HAS MORE CHEMISTRY WITH THE GODDAMN HORSE.

With Yuuki.......while rereading, something really stood up to me - And now, don’t get me wrong, you can disagree with me and I would be totally alright with that, it is your opinion and this is mine - Yuuki only started to ‘’like’’ Zero after she noticed the signals he gave off - Whenever he wanted to kiss her and almost actually did, and she noticed - Only then, did she start to think of him as someone other than a brotherly figure.  It is a typical teenager thing to get; Confusion and Curiosity when someone started to notice you in a different light, and she is a teen, so it made sense as well,,,,,,,,but like Zero’s Character to me the relationship just continued to be that; A Teenager Crush at best. Her love for him was bleak compared to her love for Kaname, She implies since CH1 / EP 1 that she likes him and the longer you watch/ read the series, the deeper her love gets. It is really, really obvious from an unbiased standpoint that she loves Kaname more and most likely continues to fall deeper for him than Zero  - But she still loves him, while writing the rewrite I will not ignore that, it is a fact that she does love both. It is just, that her love for the one outweigh the other.

I also love to compare the first time Zero bit Yuuki vs the first time Kaname almost bit her (the first time we see it)

Zero wasn’t himself, he bit her without realising it; simply put, he hurt her, and she is afraid and wants it to stop.

Now with Kaname it’s... a whole different scenario.

He asks her before he almost committed to it. And she said yes. She was ready to give up her humanity for him, which is a big deal. There is consent where with Z/Y there isn’t any in the future. Why I wanted to show this is simple; This is the main difference between the couples.  And I don’t read vkm, but I saw some.......scenes with Zero and Yuuki that just reminded me of this and I  thought huh.  So Hino foreshadowed this type of tone in the relationship from the get-go…

image

When I saw the Z/Y scene in vkm I officially  just gave up on them, because this just....abuse.

And yes, I do like dark ships, I love it when there are morally grey aspects in a ship that can be explored, but this isn’t it, sis.   I want these ‘’Monstrous, Dark, Unhealthy’’ ships to be Mutual. I want them bloody and have power and not seeing one partner being underneath the other, feeling lost and gone. When one of the  parties in a relationship isn’t okay with your actions, and you do it anyway, and this in such gruesome Manner? I am sorry, but in canon, I cannot see them romantically any more after seeing the panels. I just can’t.

Now of course we need to look at other facts;

For the first bite thing; Zero apologised by the end and felt immense guilt, he never wanted to do it again, going as far as giving Yuuki a weapon against him.

He never wanted to hurt her... but Yuuki, my dear girl, did something else entirely; She makes a deal with him, that she would let him bite her so that he won’t transform into an E’. I think most people make this seem like more than it ever was,,,,,,but there really wasn’t. She just wanted to help him stay human, ig. He is her best friend, of course she would want to help him, stay alive.eyyyy Neat. That's what I thought. Until this particular scene.

She straight up admits she is using him because she does not want him to leave her.

She doesn’t want him to die.  I noticed  how Zero kind of made Yuuki fear for his life? When he admitted he wants to die along with Hio  - This is probably why she started to bind him to her in the first place, before it was only to secure his fall to an Level- E and now?  She does not want to lose him and here it doesn’t matter if its romantic or Platonic; He is one of the closest friends of hers first and foremost, and she did not want to him to leave her. She did not want to be alone.

(And how that backfired when he finds out that she is a pure blood actually hurts to see.) The Sentence; ‘’ If I become a vampire, then will my heart strengthen?’’ is her manipulating him, and she admits it; Then she knows, that way he won’t leave since Zero does not want Yuuki to become a Vampire. So he would stay with her. ‘‘ This is all for myself, otherwise  I wouldn’t have told Zero something that he really did not want to hear the most’‘; She gives him blood, gives him reasons to not leave her.... it is indeed selfish...possessive even. For being human she already showcases pretty Pureblood-like traits lol.

Kaname and Yuuki are different, but they are also not pure, shoujo magic either. But the difference again is, clink clink lets rise our glasses - They have something called consent...but other toxic traits as well. They are possessive of each other and Kaname is really, really overprotective and a few things more; I am not excusing them. I just see them working things out better.

I got overboard with this, I am so sorry  but!  To answer your last question both will have a certain ‘‘ Canon’‘ status by the end of in vino veritas, I will not say how though since that would be a huge spoiler <3

My favorite Japan YouTubers

Language:

  • Learn Japanese with Japanese101 - If you’re delving into Japanese for the first time, I feel like their content is great!
  • Japanese Ammo with Misa - If you’re a beginner, Misa’s videos are well put together, and she makes it easy for you to understand Japanese grammar.
  • Learn Japanese - He includes a lot of words in Anime by breaking down the vocabulary used so you can watch it without subtitles. His lessons include everything from JLPT N5 to N1.
  • Miku Real Japanese - Also aimed more for the beginner, her videos are cute and sort of humorous. She focuses on a lot of casual conversation Japanese and Osaka dialect and does a few video around culture (and cultural shock).
  • Masa Sensei - Geared toward beginners trying to go for the N5 and N4 tests. She uses “powerpoint” or visual presentations while she’s teaching verbs and grammar!
  • Sambon Juku - If you are N3 and above, Sambon Juku’s videos are great because there is less English and-or other languages to help guide you. He explains grammar, vocabulary, and kanji in Japanese

On the topic of Sambon Juku, YouTuber Kemushichan interviewed him on how Japanese people learn Japanese.

Culture/Identity:

  • Max D. Capo - I’ve been following him for quite some time now but I really enjoy his videos because he’s a little awkward but funny. His focus is mainly on mixed race Japanese identity in and outside of Japan, both in ENG and JP.
  • internationally ME - She focus on working, living, traveling, and eating in Japan.  She seems sweet and down to earth.
  • KemushiChan - Her focus is on life, work, and language in Japan. She’s very proactive and kind. Her videos are especially useful if you are interested in the MEXT Scholarship or want to know what it’s like obtaining a degree in Japan.
  • The Black Experience Japan - Their purpose is to get rid of negative stereotypes of black people but to also share the experiences of black people (and mixed race folks) living abroad and/or in their home country in Asia.
  • Sunny and Chris - Their focus no longer is on Japan and is a more general travel channel but some of Chris Okano’s videos with a focus on Japan in regards to travel, culture, and identity are quite nice.

JRR #2: August 1 - August 13, 2020

If you saw this earlier and noticed it was a giant wall of text, that’s because posting drafts from mobile seems to erase all links and other formatting in my posts. Note to self. Anyway: here’s to another set of resources.

  • Yuki’s Japanese TV: He’s got a variety of video content from JLPT and grammar to vocab but also topics like food and life during a pandemic. What makes his channel extra special in my book (can you guess?) is that he speaks in Japanese. He does have some in English, and others where he speaks both, but as far as grammar—it’s in Japanese (from what I’ve seen). If that sounds intimidating, he hard subs a lot of his sentences (still in Japanese) and supplies graphics to help demonstrate points, so even if you don’t understand all that he says it’s still difficult to feel lost with Yuki.
  • Automatic Japanese: I am in love with Asari’s channel! Most of her videos are spoken in Japanese and accompanied by Japanese and English subtitles (that she herself makes). She speaks with clarity and in a fair pace that I feel isn’t too fast or too slow, plus she’s given me some pretty solid learning tips this week. I also recommend checking out her IG
  • Learning Language with Youtube BETA: something I discovered from Asari! It’s similar to the LLN extension, but for YouTube.
  • Learn Japanese with Noriko: a podcast in Japanese for listening practice, of course. But I love this one a little more because she offers some (limited) transcripts on her site, and that makes it a little easier (and more fun) for me to follow along.
  • Erin’s Challenge! I Can Speak Japanese: having never used Erin’s Challenge, I’m not sure if this is an update of the old content or entirely new, but it’s here and ready to help you learn Japanese╭( ・ㅂ・)و ̑̑ ˂ᵒ͜͡ᵏᵎ⁾✩ It’s a series of basic and advanced skit videos with additional parts like key phrases, scripts, and manga for onomatopoeia. I went into Lesson 7 and found it to be, yeah–completely cheesy–but also fun!
  • Hito’s World: a fun game for learning kanji that I think is best for beginners–either that, or for hammering in the romaji spellings. Or at least in regards to the level I’ve worked up to. (And speaking as someone who never remembers which way is left or right–as in I literally bombed the same A&P quiz twice because I confused left and right–I really have to think about whether I need to type 右 or 左. It’s… a mental exercise.) I wish it allowed or accepted hiragana, but I know it’s a WIP. You can also join r/Hito and check out the road map
  • Tobira Vocabulary: Anki deck for Tobira (obviously). Beware: although it says it’s a complete vocab set, I’ve read two comments that claim otherwise.
  • Tobira Kanji: includes kanji and vocab from all Tobira chapters. Another option if Anki’s not your thing (+ it may actually contain all vocab?). I’ve tried both the Tobira Anki deck and Memrise course, and I actually prefer Memrise in this case. But that’s just me.
  • Learning ENG & JPN: I did a lot of hunting to find this again, and I almost thought it was a lost resource—this is a blog run by a native Japanese speaker who is learning English. Posts are short and written in both English and Japanese while containing interesting tidbits about Japan and its culture.
  • Oshaberi Izakaya: this is a completely free way to get in some speaking practice with other learners organized by Japanese teacher Izumi Ise. They meet up a few times a month, but you’re not required to attend all meetings.
  • Japanese Learner Cafe: similar to the one above, this provides a means to practice speaking. The on-site English allows room for needed clarity, but this is also through Zoom and I therefore assume 100% free. If anyone decides to try it I’d be interested to know what your experience was like!
