tbh it seems like a good idea to tag goncharov posts as unreality for those who have experience with delusions, hallucinations, or being gaslit.

for any confused or possibly unsettled over the way tumblr is leaping on the goncharov concept: it’s a joke based on a past tumblr post about a fake martin scorsese movie title being printed on a pair of knockoff shoes. there is no real film, the movie doesn’t exist, & people’s posts are just having fun with the concept.

you’re not imagining things & you’re not having an episode! i hope more people tag it as unreality for people’s safety & comfort

So whenever your disability pride flag is shared on tiktok, ive noticed people asking why do disabled people need a pride flag, or saying that we dont deserve one because we are "co opting" the gay pride movement... and i am honestly at a loss at what to say to them

Okay, then: here's some Disability Pride Talking points for you, when you come upon that assumption:

First: The Disability Rights Movement gained steam in the U.S. at the same time as the Civil Rights Movement was advocating for racial equality, and the Women's Rights movement was advocating for gender equality -- all in the same decade as the Stonewall Riots.

Second: it may seem like Disability Pride Month is "copying" Queer Pride Month, because July comes right after June. But the reason we celebrate Disability Pride Month in July is because that's when The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed: on July 26, 1990. This was the first Disabilities Rights act in the world. It was followed in 1995 by the Disabilities Discrimination Act in the U.K., and in 2019 in Canada.

Third: on April 5, 1977, the (American) Nationwide 504 Sit-in (Wikipedia article) began, to protest the fact that three presidents in a row had been stalling for four years to implement Disability Civil Rights legislation. Disability advocates staged sit-ins in Federal Buildings for the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, and Seattle, San Fransisco, and Washington D.C..

The sit-in in Washington D.C. lasted 28 hours. The Sit-in in San Fransisco lasted 25 Days, and remains the longest occupation of a Federal Government building in U.S. History (It was epic). The civil rights group The Black Panthers also helped with logistical support.

The police tried to force the people inside to leave by cutting phone lines, forgetting that there were people who knew American Sign Language both inside the building, and outside, in the crowd, and they relayed messages back and forth through the windows (excuse me while I take a Cackle break).

Finally: Disabled people are human beings, and deserve all the human rights as everyone else. But a lot of people in authority, look at our lives from the outside, decide that we already have a low-quality of life (without actually asking us), and deciding that it wouldn't be so bad if we died. You know, at the start of the COVID-19 outbreak in this country, it was a fairly common policy that if hospitals ran low on ventilators, they'd just take them from disabled people who needed to use them every day? Remember that?

That's why we have to get loud.

happy disability pride month :) i'd like to give a quick shoutout 2:

  • people who know they have something going on physically but don't know exactly what it is
  • people who know they have something going on mentally but don't know exactly what it is
  • people who feel like they're not disabled enough to "count"
  • people who feel like they're "too disabled"
  • people who just realized they're disabled
  • people who are working through internalized ableism

you're cool, you're great, you belong, have a good month

Pls do not reblog anything with the old disability pride flag, it does cause seizure and migraines, please use the new one which was created by the same person with the feedbacks of many other disabled people.

This is the safe one:

Dont use the zigzag one, your making disabled space inaccessible for a part of the community.

[ID: the disability pride flag: it has a charcoal gray background with 5 diagonal stripes directly next to each other running from the top left to the bottom right of the flag. The stripes from leftmost to rightmost starting point are red, gold, white, blue, and green /end ID]

Hi! I'm sure you've been asked this a lot, but what do all the colors in the flag stand for?

Avatar

(This flag, which, for now, I'm calling the "Disability Pride Flag,")*:

[Image description: A muted black flag with a diagonal band from the top left to bottom right corner, made up of five parallel stripes in red, gold, pale grey, blue, and green Description ends]

The overall Black Field is for mourning and rage over disabled victims of eugenics, abuse, and filicide [AKA murder by family members, or caregivers]; the colored bands cut across that like light streaming through the darkness. The White Stripe in the middle is for invisible disabilities and undiagnosed disabilities. The Red Stripe is for physical disabilities / mobility impairments. The Gold Stripe is for Neurodivergent disabilities. The Blue Stripe is for Mental Illness. The Green Stripe is for sensory disabilities / impairments.

Thanks for asking!

*not to be confused with the United Nations "Disability Rights Flag")

ambulances aren't wheelchair accessible

if you need an ambulance and you use a wheelchair that doesn't fold, they will force you to leave it behind. wherever it is, wherever you are. just abandon your autonomy and ability to move around and potentially tens of thousands of dollars of equipment

imagine if you needed an ambulance and they said fine but you can't bring your legs

people have taken issue with my use of the word 'force', so, after rolling my eyes so hard i can now see my brain, i will clarify that, no, they can't 'force' you to do anything. they will simply not take you to the hospital if you refuse to leave your wheelchair behind.

Hey! While those are amazing ways of supporting trans women and you should def check out and donate to these orgs, I’d like to remind people that Rowling’s terf bullshit has impacted very badly trans people in the UK, and all those are all US orgs from what I can gather. It’s great to support them, but Rowling has been particularly influential in fucking over trans people’s lives in the UK and made it really unsafe for UK trans people (which, as ever, means it’s even more unsafe for UK trans poc) .

I’d also argue that while Rowling is particularly vitriolic towards trans women, her stance and voice and lobbying end up affecting trans people in the UK as a whole. So while you shower trans women with love and support, please spread some of that love and support to other trans people too!

It’s past midnight and I have to be up in less than 5 hours so I don’t have the time or energy to put up an actual list myself besides some quick searching, but I’d love for everyone reblogging this to look up local trans uk orgs, especially trans poc uk orgs, and support them too.

(I apologize I tried to look for specifically Welsh trans funds or orgs but couldn’t find any - I did find the UNIQUE network but couldn’t find a page on how to support them - so if anyone knows of one please let me know!)

I encourage anyone to reblog this with more specific organisations or funds and gofundmes of UK trans people and especially trans women! And I encourage everyone to check out and support the orgs listed above, especially trans poc organisations!!

I’m also encouraging you to, in general, consider also supporting non-US trans people and organisations, even if they get less promoted (especially non-Western ones!). Trans people exist all over the world and deserve just as much support!!

Thank you so much! As a trans person living in the uk I was gonna point this out. J k rowling has already severely affected our laws and how trans people receive medical care so whilst I support the US trans community its a bit disheartening that even posts reminding you to help the people she hurts are US focused

A good Welsh trans fund is TransAidCymru!

i just said the same thing on twitter but please please please consider standing up for remote learning options even if everything does somehow go back to normal. so many physically disabled people drop out of school/college because of inaccessibilty. we have been asking for an option like this for so long and keeping it would change the lives of sooooo many people. we have an opportunity to start reforming the educational system to be more accessible to disabled and poor people and i really dont want to lose remote options because ableds are too lazy to keep hosting video calls.

this is okay to reblog but physically abled ppl be quiet!
