Announcing Avatar Sunken Ships Week!

Hi, mods Appa and Pabu here to give you a rundown of the event. We're thrilled with the initial interest we've seen and look forward to everyone's participation.

Prompt Release -- Excluded Ships

What it is: Avatar Sunken Ships Week is a week to ship any Avatar pairing that did not have a ship-specific tumblr event in 2021. The goal is to make a place for those small or overlooked ships to shine before the year is out, and to foster a sense of community in the Avatar fandom. It'll be run like any other ship week, with seven days of prompts and an AO3 collection. We welcome all contributions, from multi-chapter fics to art to headcanons.

How it works:

- Prompts will be released in advance. You a can create content for as many or as few of the prompts as you like.

- For fics, add them to the moderated AO3 collection. For posts about fics, art, or submissions directly on tumblr, tag @avatar-sunken-ships-week and we'll reblog it.

- Tag everything #avatarsunkenshipsweek so folks can easily filter.

- You do not have to use the same pairing for all the prompts.

- You do not need a tumblr account to participate. You are welcome to submit content directly to us and we can post it for you.

- In order to prevent prompts from being catered to one ship over others, there will be no prompt voting for this event. But we DO want to hear from you. So we'll still be taking prompt submissions, and creativity is encouraged. Prompts will then be chosen by the mods to keep them as generic as possible so all ships can participate with all prompts.

- Unsure of something? Just ask!

What's Next?

In the lead up to the event we'll be highlighting some of the many ships didn't get an event this year, and we want your ideas! Look for a poll sometime in the next week soliciting ideas for pairings for us to feature so it's not just the mods' favorites all the time on the blog. We can't promise we'll get to all of them, but we hope to highlight quite a few. Maybe it will even spark an idea?

Rules: Ah, the fine print. Here we go:

- All Avatar ships are welcome as long as they did not have a ship-specific event in 2021. This includes the shows as well as comics. The mods will maintain a list here of ships that are off-limits, but if you have a question on a particular ship or think we missed something, please ask.

- Absolutely no ship bashing or character bashing. This event is meant to be fun and inclusive regardless of what you ship. If you don't like a particular pairing, don't consume the content.

- NSFW/18+ is welcome as long as it is tagged. If it is a fic, rate and tag it appropriately. If it is art, tag it NSFW and place the image under the cut. This goes for excessive violence/gore as well as sexual content. Age up any minors if your piece is mature in nature.

- Image IDs are helpful but not required. If an image does not include an image ID, we'll add one when we reblog it.

- Be nice. If you see something you think violates our rules, flag it to the mods and we'll check it out. Do not go after creators.

Interest Check! Irosami "Dinghy Day"

Let's get real. It's been more than a decade since the one and only ship week for this handsome general and his brilliant kick-ass princess. The Irosami ship (Iroh II x Asami Sato), like much of the LOK fandom, has, shall we say, sailed. But that's no reason those of us still rowing away for this rare pair can't have a little fun!

I'm therefore putting out an interest check for a one-day celebration of love and rare pairs. It might not be a ship week, but Irosami Dinghy Day is all about appreciating what we do have and giving space for whomever is so inclined to make art, fics, headcanons, mood boards, incorrect quotes, or anything at all for this darling pair. We'll have a few prompts and fewer rules beyond a focus on General Iroh and Asami Sato and the usual no ship-bashing. All are welcome on this little boat for the day.

Sunken Ships Week Interest Check

We're baaaaack!

Well, maybe we're back. As fast as time flies, a lot can happen in a year. So we're putting out an interest check for this event. Last December we had over 100 submissions across dozens of sunken ships! Are you ready to take the plunge again? Like or rb this post or drop a note in our inbox to let us know how you're feeling.

As a reminder, Avatar Sunken Ships Week is a ship week for any Avatarverse ship that didn't have a ship-specific event in 2022, because every ship deserves a ship week, no matter how small. All kinds of creations are welcome, as are ships from any Avatar content including shows, books, and comics. We'd likely run this event in early December.

As for the eligible ships, the mods are still tracking events. A far as we know, these are the ships that have had or will definitely have ship weeks this year, and therefore would be ineligible for Avatar Sunken Ships Week: MaiLee, YuTen, Wuko, Azulaang, Teoaang, Sukka, Jetko, Kataang, Zutara, Maiko, Zukaang, Zukki, Kainora, Tysuki, Zutaraang,  Urzai, Jinzula, Yuetara, and Sokkla. There are also a few events we're tracking, but which are either early in the planning stages or we're not sure if they took place, and so may be excluded: Toko, Makorra, Baavira, Korrasami, and Korrlok. If your ship isn't on this list, feel free to write it!

While we're normally all about hot hot hotmen and hilarity, there is a long overdue post we need to make in honour of all the other fandom pages that have helped the Palooza along the way.

To @atlaevents we are forever grateful for the support and advertisement in our inaugural year. To @urzaiweekblog we stand with you in believing that sometimes canon can go suck an egg. To @avatar-sunken-ships-week we give a standing ovation for a beautiful endeavor of celebrating small ships -- even if our flagship pairing wasn't part of the final product. To @bumizumii we salute another dedicated rarepair shipper and event mod, and thank you yet again for the early support. We learned much from @avatar-rare-pair-ship-challenge about how a fun event ought to be run and appreciate all the work they do. And to @avatar-march-madness -- who have boldly shared Palooza-adjacent material -- we tip our hats.

There might not be a "we" in community, but there certainly is a "u", and the Zhaozai Palooza would not be what it is without all your support.

Enormous thanks to our many participants and readers for a fun and hugely productive event. In the end we wound up with over a hundred contributions of fics, art, and mood boards across 60 distinct sunken ships! We're so happy to see these neglected pairs, OT3s and OT4s get so much love in 2021. Cheers to you.

I wanted to ask... Remember I posted snippets of two fics cuz I couldn't finish it on time? Would it be alright if I add it to the AO3 collection when I start writing it or will that also close?

Thanks for the question. We'll be closing submissions at midnight PST more or less, but all that needs to be in the AO3 collection is a piece of the story. Our suggestion is to add your snippets to the AO3 collection as individual works before the deadline as placeholders, then take your time finishing them.

We were blown away to see the amout of participants and the number of ships and various interpretation of prompts.

Summary: Being a Freedom Fighter is not easy. In fact, it's been so hard lately that they stopped calling themselves that, becoming mere refugees somewhere in the Earth Kingdom. Their journey has left some scars, but some good things too; Smellerbee, who always looked up to Jet as a leader, has lately been looking at him as something else. The past is heavy and she doesn't want to accept it, much less act on it, but her fear has limits.
