love that arya serving as roose's cupbearer served to open her eyes to the way in which class and status literally erases the smallfolk from the perceived realities of their lords (a lesson further reinforced in her travels with sandor where simply wearing ratty clothes is enough for knights to just not notice the most recognizably marred face and most wanted man in all of westeros) and then in the show serving as tywin's cupbearer was just "we wish charles dance was our dad :( he would be so stern but also loving to us :(( we would impress him with our gumption i mean sorry arya would impr-"

One of my least favourite dialogue tropes is when a man tells a woman, “You can’t do that” or “I wouldn’t do that if I were you” and she says, “Why? Because I’m a woman and therefore too weak to handle this/can’t take care of myself?” or something to that effect and the guy replies with, “No, because everyone who tried that ended up with a bullet in their brain” or something equally reasonable and not gender-specific that paints him as the rational not sexist guy and the woman as an irrational paranoid feminist who searches for sexism in everything. This whole scenario is built on the idea that sexism is over and women’s fears and suspicions don’t have a leg to stand on. It’s also self-congratulatory pseudofeminism bc it’s supposed to make the viewer/reader/listener feel that in this specific work of fiction women are treated respectfully and as equal with men.

huh.. never thought of it like that

But, what if the male character isn’t sexist? I meam…their fictional sure but…I’m not sure how to phrase this

Its not a question of the character themselves- its how the writers are portraying them. The way this trope plays out, the whole moment revolves around the woman looking foolish for assuming that there is sexism happening. She is characterized as being irrational, jumping to conclusions, even insecure. While the dude is characterized as the calm, rational one.

It is a trope that specifically works by taking a woman standing up to sexism and saying “haha it wasnt actually sexist at all! Isnt calling out sexism foolish and silly. Thats what you get for assuming that men are sexist!”

I have the same reaction with homophobic jokes set up like this. Like the whole “you can’t marry a woman”, “why bc you think its wrong” “no we haven’t found you the right dress yet silly!” Or stuff along those lines.

It feels like someone setting up to punch you and then you duck and the person goes “haha, i wasn’t gonna punch you at all, why would you duck? You shouldnt just assume someone’s gonna deck you because they have their fists up.”

saw someone once describe those kinds of “jokes” as winding up they’re going to punch you and then laughing when you flinch.

I don’t have a lot of words right now but Steven Attewell, who you all reading this probably know as @racefortheironthrone , just passed away. He was a very great writer, friend, and person, and it’s a horrible loss.

Steven was an incredible contributor to the ASOIAF community, a great friend to the moderators of this blog and to so many others. His work analyzing ASOIAF chapter-by-chapter through a historical and political lens, begun in 2012, was a landmark and a prototype for numerous fans writing ASOIAF analysis, a true paragon. His blog on tumblr, where he kindly answered so many questions about the series in addition to his essay writing, was an inspiration to the ASOIAF fandom here, helping to build a community based on textual analysis. It's not an exaggeration to say that this blog would not at all be the same without him.

We will miss him more than we can say.

Why isn't it more talked about how there's canonically an archmaester who wrote a very, very big Book about women ruling in the aftermath of the Dance. It's a detail that rules so much. A guy literally talking about hundreds of widows ruling parts of Westeros after the war. Why not much talk about Johanna Lannister, born Westerling, Sharis Footly, Lady Tyrell, Samantha Tarly, Elenda Baratheon born Caron, Sabitha Frey, Alys Rivers in her own way...a tide of ruling girls because a bunch of guys weren't cool with a girl ruling & got themselves killed trying to stop it. That's some massive irony.

My amazing and generous friend @gorillawithautism organised a donation match fundraiser for this gofundme:

nafti surpassed his matching goal, leaving €318 unmatched and I had extra money this week, so I was able to match the rest!

If you also find yourself having extra money this week I would love to challenge you to match as much of me/nafti’s donation as you can to this gofundme to help this family evacuate Gaza!!!!

ANTI-CAPITALIST AFFIRMATIONS

  • i am allowed to spend my time creating things, even if they are not beautiful.
  • there is no such thing as a "real job." all forms of work are real and valid.
  • there is nothing that i need to accomplish to be worthy. i am already worthy.
  • doing nothing is good for my soul.
  • i am not defined by what i produce.
  • my worth cannot be measured by my paycheck, my job title, or a list of professional or academic achievements.
  • i do not need to monetize my hobbies, it is enough to spend time doing something i love.
  • i will not let society decide what success looks like. i can define what successful life looks like for me.

This is awesome…some body focused ones would be so nice add, too, seeing as how much money is made off of our insecurities (insecurities they manufacture in us btw)

•I am not only allowed to be still, rest, and eat, I must do these things to survive.

•My body doesn’t need to look or function to someone else’s standards.

•I’m allowed to seek pleasure in my body.

If I may add a few for creatives:

  • I have inherent worth, even in my time of inactivity.
  • I deserve to create without the worry of whether 'it will sell' or not.
  • I deserve to create for no audience but myself.
  • My art cannot be merely defined by its sales.
  • My art cannot be merely defined on whether or brings me 'prestige' or not.
  • I am free of self censorship, and excess judging based on internalised capitalist notions.

I have inherent

worth, even in my time of

inactivity.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

You. Are. worthy.

Even if you never drive. Even if you need help with basic tasks. Even if you need help with hygiene. Even if you’ll never work. Even if you’ll need help for the rest of your life. You’re. Still. Worthy.

Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re useless, or that you don’t deserve certain things. You’re amazing, and I see you.

And just like that, the booping was over.

We stood around, looking at each other, not quite knowing what to do with ourselves at first.

After many moments of silence, one by one, and slowly at first, we all put down our weapons, solemnly nodded to the rest, and went our separate ways. None of us knew if we'd ever see each other again after that one wild day, but we knew we'd never forget the friendships we made. No matter how life changed us, we'd always have the day we booped.

And maybe, just maybe, that was enough.
