I have one question for all those people who support the trans radical activism. You get so angry about transphobia, but how can you stand with people who are actively telling others to kill themselves, who are full of aggression and violent language, and who harass CHILDREN online for liking a fandom?

Every single trans person of influence I've seen in this conversation has disavowed those ugly, horrid actions. Please don't give that sad micronority the satisfaction of letting them dominate a broader conversation that was supposed to be about equity and capitalism. Don't let them take you like that.

Healthcare bills go against professional and scientific consensus that gender affirming care saves lives. Denying access will cause harm. Providers are faced with criminal charges, parents are threatened with child abuse charges, and intersex children are typically exempted. Kansas SB233 healthcare bill would allow civil action against and revoking of license to any medical physician that performs gender affirming surgery on a minor as well as if they prescribe any gender affirming medications. This bill also tries to define “biological sex” by using endogenous hormone profile, sex organs and chromosomes.

Drag bans restrict access for folks who are gender non-conforming in any way. They loosely define drag as any public performance with an “opposite gender expression”, as sexual in nature, and inappropriate for children. This also pushes trans individuals out of public spaces. Kentucky SB115 defines establishments that have any drag show as an adult entertainment establishment and requires them to be at least 1,000 feet from any establishment that has children. This would ban any drag reading time but also defines parks, and playgrounds as used by children. If found civilly in violation it is a $7,500 a day fine to the establishment.

Idaho's health care bill H0071 has a floor vote scheduled.

Kentucky SB150, school bill, is on the floor with many amendments being filed.

Kentucky SB102, school bill, has been sent to the education committee.

North Dakota SB2260, parental rights bill, has passed a 2nd reading.

North Dakota SB2231, pronoun bill, has passed a 2nd reading.

Oklahoma HB408, sex designation bill, has yet to pass the senate (may do so today), but has a primary author in house already.

you have got to understand that your mother tongue is not the model of language. all your words have secret histories and layers of meaning just the same as other people's words. the word you think of as just a word has etymology, it wasn't handed down from God as a finished word. English doesn't have a word for movie you have to either refer to the recording medium or use a short version of "moving picture", isn't that cute?

Our grocery store has giant robots now.

As you can see, they put giant googley eyes on them to make them more endearing and less menacing. Except they’re on the side of the robot’s “head,” so you can’t see them when this 6 ft black obelisk with glowing blue eyes starts rolling up on you and your small defenseless child while you’re innocently standing in the baking aisle looking for pancake mix.

Today a woman at the grocery store passed me and said “That stupid goddamn robot!” and smashed her cart into it. The first blow in the human/robot war has been struck.

hey y’all, Stop and Shop employee here. Let me explain these things. This is “Marty”. A bunch of martys were installed at stores all over the country. When we were first told of Marty the managers said they’d be used to clean up small messes and to help customers find products. They don’t do either of those things. They putter around the store constantly beeping and getting in the way. If they find a ‘mess’ on the ground.. (a mess being anything as small as the stem of an apple) they don’t clean it up. Instead it starts saying to be wary of the hazard and broadcasts over the PA system for someone to come clean it up. They have no interface to help customers find items and they don’t clean anything themselves. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT THEY DO!?! Spy on workers. These things are just an extra security camera that can move all over the store and watch the employees to make sure we aren’t doing anything the company doesn’t like. And here’s the real kicker… each unit costs about $40,000. And these were unveiled a week after we came back from striking about unfair policies they were trying to push onto us.  So tl:dr, Marty fucking sucks and so does Stop and Shop

Locking your wheelchair lift and requiring disabled people to find an employee to unlock AND OPERATE it is a direct violation of the ADA.

“The [ADA] Standards require ‘unassisted’ entry and exit from lifts (§410.1). Situations in which platform lifts are locked and require users to request or retrieve a key for operation will not satisfy this requirement for independent operation.”

“Attendant operation, although recognized by the ASME A18.1 Standard, is expressly prohibited by the ADA Standards. Platform lifts must provide ‘unassisted entry and exit from the lift’ (§410.1).”

Smells like a lawsuit waiting to happen…

This is not great, but it’s likely because people are fucking stupid and will screw around with it if it’s not locked up.

You think people were peeing. In an open wheelchair lift. In the middle of a museum. With public toilets around the corner.

I think not.

But even if people had been peeing in it or otherwise misusing the lift… It. Doesn’t. Matter. It’s not just “not great.” It’s ILLEGAL. It is just as illegal to lock off a wheelchair lift as it is to not provide one to begin with. 

The correct response to people peeing in an elevator is never to lock the elevator. It is to provide a toilet. If you think the correct response to any problem is to violate the civil rights of an entire group of people by denying them access, YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

Disability rights are civil rights.

You want to know exactly how this went down? Let me tell you a tale.

I was visiting the museum with friends. They went on around the corner while I finished looking at the previous exhibit. I then followed them around the corner only to find I couldn’t get up to the exhibit because the museum AS PART OF THEIR POLICY had illegally locked the lift. My friends didn’t know the lift was locked (why would the lift be locked?) and had no idea that I couldn’t get to them.

Now I, the disabled person, am forced to travel halfway around the building to the front desk to find someone to unlock the lift for me, wait for them to finish what they’re doing, and then travel all the way back to the lift. This was bad enough in a wheelchair. Who else uses lifts? Oh yes. People who struggle to walk. Can you imagine, as a person who struggles to walk, being forced to walk halfway around a building, and then back again, just to access an exhibit? You wouldn’t do it. You’d skip the exhibit. You’ve just been completely denied access.

So finally the museum employee unlocks the lift and then operates it (because yes, they’ve made it so I can’t operate it myself, which is also illegal). I finally get to the top probably ten minutes later, only to find that my friends have finished looking at the exhibit and are heading down again, wondering what has happened to me. 

After I’ve gone to all the trouble to get up there, fuck it if I’m not going to look at the damn exhibit. So I look at it, then head back to the lift to go back down, only to find they’ve locked the lift with me at the top and gone back to the front desk.

If one of my friends hadn’t stayed up there with me, I’d probably still be up there. As it was, my friend had to go down the stairs, back around to the front, find an employee, and get them to come back and let me down. Leaving me sitting up there. Alone. For another five minutes.

Now imagine if I had gone to the the museum by myself. Or what if there had been an emergency? You think if there was a fire some museum employee who couldn’t be assed to leave the damn lift unlocked until I had come back down would really have run back into the building to unlock the lift so I could get down? I think not.

Locking an accessibility feature is never the right solution. It is denying access to an entire class of people. Which is ILLEGAL and a CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATION.

Disability law is civil rights law.

An error? Is this even legal??
