The above are links to my Sailor Moon Anniversary Anthology, marking various anniversaries in the Sailor Moon universe between 2021-2022. 

This is a huge ongoing project and I’d not have made it as far as I have without the continuing help and support from the Moonlight Legends Discord community.

The ML discord server is a community for anyone and everyone who’s interested in Sailor Moon fanworks.

There’re sections devoted to fanfiction, fan art, cosplay, etc.

Not only can you hang out with fellow fan creators and discover their works, but you can also share your own works and ask for feedback, help or even request collaborators for anything you are working on. This includes NSFW content too!

My first time participating in the Character Design Challenge! I’m sad I didn’t know about the mermaid challenge until it was too late, but it’s okay, I love Sailor Moon!

Princess Serenity and Luna always reminded me of the Chinese Moon Fairy, Chang E, so I kept that in mind as I designed. I tried to evoke her iconic hair style, but also inspired by more traditional Chinese hairstyles. Not too hard at all! I also put the planetary symbols of her main five sailor scouts on the “brocade” since I wanted to tie their relationship in somehow!

The last one with Ami and Minako is from Sailor Moon S: The Movie.

You can tell by the outfits since those are unique to that movie, and the quality and colors of the animation supports that this is from a movie.

The second one with Mamoru is from S1 EP45: The Sailor Soldiers Die! The Tragic Final Battle, which is part 1 of the classic finale.

The background suggests that this is a dramatic memory of Mamoru, so it suggests some emotional moment in an episode where he’s not present for some reason. You know this has to be from after S1 EP35 when Usagi gets back her memories cause she wouldn’t be sentimental about him otherwise, and would likely only be in Classic, R, or Stars since Mamoru isn’t absent from Usagi’s life in Super or SuperS. I assumed based on the outfit that this was either from classic or Stars since Mamoru had lots of other fun outfits in R besides the lovely green jacket lol. Classic seemed like a much more likely answer since Mamoru didn’t actually get much screen time in Stars after Galaxia killed him, so I looked through screenshots and did some reverse image searching to pinpoint the exact episode.

The third one with Luna is also from Sailor Moon S: The Movie.

This one was harder, but I actually figured it out because of TikTok. The higher quality animation and color palette suggested again that this might be from a movie, and the most likely movie would be Sailor Moon S: The Movie since it focuses on Luna, but I wasn’t quite sure and didn’t want to jump to that conclusion, so I looked up pictures of Luna crying which lead to some fan cams on TikTok which show this actual scene - it’s from the very end of the movie where Luna and Artemis reunite.  

The first one with Ami is from S1 EP21: Protect the Children's Dreams! Friendship Linked by Anime

This one was TRICKY. You can tell by the length of Ami’s hair that this is from earlier on the show, and this is supported by the color of her uniform being from middle school, though the hair is a better hint since the uniform only rules our Stars. This means the screenshot is from Classic, R, or possibly Super. Then, I referenced that chart which shows all of the different animation directors for sailor moon, and determined this episode was probably directed by either Hisashi Kagawa or Kazuko Tadano. I was able to find list of all the episodes the two of them were the animation directors for, and then I sorted through the episodes to see if I could arrow down which ones might have this scene. Some of the episodes I could easily rule out, like the few from before EP8 when Ami was introduced and ones where I knew Ami wouldn’t wear her school uniform because she was either mostly in her Senshi outfit or other civilian clothes. At first I was just looking a episode screenshots to figure out what clothes Ami was wearing and thought maybe I’d get lucky and find this from a screenshot too, but I realized pretty quickly I’d need to actually watch the episodes, so I played them at 2x speed and skipped all of the parts where Ami wasn’t on screen to get through them faster. I went through all of the Hisashi Kagawa episodes first, which proved to be a bust, then started going through the Kazuko Tadano episodes and there it was, the third episode I checked!

It took surprisingly much less time than I anticipated for me to ID all of these, only about three hours, though I did the first three yesterday morning before work and I did the last one this morning before work. I wrote this as a draft as I found each episode, so the episodes are in the order I figured them out, not order of appearance in the post.

It's really strange to me that the folks who take umbridge with Usagi and Mamoru's age gap in the anime don't also take umbridge with you know...the entire premise of the Sailor Moon franchise.

Like seriously, from a real world POV I not okay with a 14 year old dating an 18 year old.

But you know what I am even less okay with?

Children aged 8 (in Chibi-Usa's case) to 17 (in Haruka and Michiru's case) acting as vigilantes wherein they risk serious physical and mental harm every week fighting inhuman entities in populated civilian areas.

So guys either:

a) Call out literally every single iteration of this franchise (anime, manga, live action, musicals, video games) from the ground up

or

b) Suspend your disbelief about the fake ink people dating each other whilst clearly not having sex.

In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.

I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!

From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!

I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.

The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.

(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)

If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.

The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.

  • insert selection -> if you highlight a sentence in the fic it will be added in italics to the comment box
  • add to comment box -> once you're done writing your comment, you click this button and the entire thing will automatically copied to the ao3 comment box
  • delete -> self explanatory
  • on mulitchapter fics, you will be given the option to either add the comment to just the current chapter or the entire fic

The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.

Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.

It's always funny when you talk to people who only ever saw the 90s anime and tell them about how powerful Mamoru is in the manga, lol. In the manga he's basically a Senshi himself with all the awesome powers he has (making his Naoko's statement that he's the de-facto Sailor Earth make total sense) whereas in the 90s anime he just.... throws roses and makes corny speeches, lol.

In defence of 90s Mamo, he is objectively a Senshi there too but not overall as powerful. Overall is the key word because until the end of the DK arc MangaMamo has 0 magical powers,(aside from boosting Usagi's which neither were aware of). 90s Mamo had magic off the bat, the difference is he stayed at that same power level (exempting when he was brainwashed ofc). Up until MangaMamo unlocked Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber 90s Mamo had better offensive powers but after that MangaMamo surpassed him.

That being said, whilst weaker, 90s Mamo abilities are arguably more versatile. He can usually teleport to wherever Usagi needs him to be and his Rose's can be used to free his allies and make precision strikes. His cane is also useful for this and doubles as a sword (plus when he transforms into Prince Endymion he was an actual sword and armour). By contrast, whilst Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber packs a bigger payload it is a blunt destructive instrument. Which means he can fight villains more directly for sure, but it's not as useful (or at least riskier) if Usagi or whoever's is pinned and needs to be freed Asap.

Tbh, I think their different abilities speak to the different narrative goals of the manga vs the anime. Similarly, 90s Mamo is taken less seriously, but over all so is every character. I mean Esmeraude and the Spectre Sisters are by no means comedic in the manga either. Rei and Makoto have gag moments but not as many as the anime
