Ferelden Fury (a da2/pacrim au, part eight)

The race to get suited up and into their jaeger is a silent one. Hawke occasionally catches Fenris’s eye and they share a grim look, but neither of them speaks. There’s nothing to be said. Pre-flight checks are done with one-word questions and answers, and even Varric in the control room sounds uncharacteristically subdued when he authorizes their launch. And then they’re flown out toward the rift, the Fury, Siren, and Warden out front as the Child launches a few moments later, behind the protective barrier of the other three jaegers.

There’s a minute of half-hearted strategy talk between the three forward jaegers, then they all fall quiet, watching their instruments as the rift gets closer and closer. Eventually they come close enough to the darkspawn signatures for them to appear on the sensors, and Hawke can’t help but let out a low whistle. The size on them is larger than anything Hawke ever faced while he was a pilot and larger still than the darkspawn they faced a few days ago.

“Fuck,” Isabela says over the comms.

Beside Hawke, Fenris hums in agreement.

“One minute to drop.” Bethany’s voice comes through clear as a bell, and Hawke, not for the first time, admires the amount of steel that infuses his little sister at the same time as he hates that she has to employ it.

He reaches out to Fenris through the waves of their drift and finds Fenris reaching back. They stand shoulder to shoulder and watch the tides pulling at them, the persistent memories that demand their attention, and they guide each other through them, offering the fury of their own storm to combat the force of the other. In time, they come to the new forged center of their hurricanes, grim and stony and ready to fight.

Chapter Fifty

In which Hawke acts

Music rec: “Bodybag” - Hit The Lights additional music rec in end notes on AO3 (for spoiler reasons)

“Ol’ Cory? Yeah, he’s squatting in some posh digs up in the Vimmarks, what I heard.”
The Venatori takes a long drink from his glass, nearly polishing off the last of his beer. At the tables around them, conversations continue unabated. Hawke raises his own glass, hiding his expression behind it as best he can and trying not to choke as he drinks. He’s grateful for the low light in the bar and his choice of seating in the darkest corner that had a free table. And for somewhat drunk Venatori who don’t notice him baiting a question with a name no one’s ever told him.
“Now that’s bullshit,” Kingston says, pointing a finger at his compatriot. “We’re the most trusted force he has; why would he follow us? He knows we’re good for it.”
“Does he?” Hawke sets his glass down on the table and runs a finger around the rim. He hopes the gesture comes off as know-it-all casual but can’t spare much thought for whether or not it hits. He’s shaken, can’t believe his gamble with the name worked, can’t believe he was right.
Both Venatori turn to stare at him, eyes narrowed.
Kingston snarls, “Yes,” at the same time as the other says, “Well, I thought so anyway.”

New face, who dis? Super pumped to share a preview of the wonderful cover that artist Noah Hayes put together for the zine. There are some fun little markings all over the table - but you’ll have to buy the zine to see them! ;)

Speaking of which - we’re getting close! The goal was always to launch the zine for pre-order on June 20th, which is World Refugee Day. What better cause to support than one that connects us to our favorite rag-tag crew? A portion of proceeds will go to The International Rescue Committee. Our contributors will also get a stipend for their work, as I believe it’s important to support the creative community whenever possible!

The zine will be big, folks. We’re talking 40+ new works of art, and five wonderful short stories exploring the time between the explosion at the Chantry and the explosion at the Conclave (come on with the explosions, Thedas). It’s looking like it’ll be around 80 pages of content, available exclusively during the preorder (digital and print versions will be available). Pricing isn’t available just yet, so no asks about that ;) but it will ship internationally!

Keep an eye here for the link to the pre-order in a couple of weeks!

All the artists and writers involved are intensely talented humans and I can't wait to see the finished product. Laugan has been incredible in organizing all this, please share this around!!

how would mahannon and fenris interact in ur wolf family fics?

*rubs my lil hands together*

OH MAN

see Mahanon is a bit of a fanboy at heart and after reading Tale of the Champion and hearing things from Varric he would have... honestly such a massive admiration for Fenris. sort of one of those “do I want to be him or be carried off into the sunset in his muscular heroic arms” sort of intellectual crushes. sort of a Coulson about Captain America in the avengers vibe (which I imagine Solas would find... very easy to manipulate).

and I feel like Fenris would have... no real clue how to deal with this. for one thing showing up to the inquisition and realizing that the Lord Inquisitor is this 20-something kid with big eyes and very little life experience outside his clan who thinks Fenris is the Absolute Bomb would be a bit jarring. Mahanon would try to keep his cool but would be very nervous and Fenris would at first maybe think it’s because Mahanon is put off by the lyrium tattoos and his overall “could kill you in two seconds with very little effort” demeanour before Varric tells him that no, Mahanon is just kind of shy by nature but also Fenris is sort of his hero, give him time and he’ll be able to talk to ya without squeaking or staring at his feet.

but Mahanon is also smarter than he seems and really dedicated to doing this whole Inquisition thing right and I feel like Fenris would grow to respect that - lots of parallels between Mahanon and Hawke in terms of having these circumstances thrust upon them. and ultimately, Mahanon did decide to save Hawke in the Fade, despite the political cost with the Wardens. so he’d probably earn a respectful headnod from Fenris in the end (which might just make Mahanon’s heart burst tbh).

THANK YOU FOR THIS ASK IT WAS VERY FUN TO THINK ABOUT!
