how to make a character’s death even sadder (part 2)

  • have the friend(s) comforting X as they die sing a song that has special meaning between the two of them
  • bonus points if the song was a favorite of one of their deceased family members/friends
  • have the toughest, most serious character cry at the funeral or burial after they’ve toughed it out until then
  • have them warn their friends that they’re not cut out for a dangerous mission, only for it to result in their death and their friends blame themselves
  • have the character die doing something they’ve always wanted to do, such as dying during childbirth when all they’ve ever wanted to be was a parent, or dying during a car accident immediately after getting the car they’ve wanted since they were a little kid
  • have the other characters realize that X’s death was completely preventable right after X has died
  • show the character’s parents’ reactions
  • have another character be forced to make a split second decision to save X, not realizing it would kill Y in the process, then have them find out that Y died because of their choice
  • have them die on the way to the hospital
  • force one of their family members to kill them or aid in their death
  • have X celebrate killing the threat, then have the threat immediately kill X in the middle of saying that they’re in the clear
  • right before their death, show a part of their personality that no one has seen before, such as make an always bubbly character cry during their death, have the tough character break and show genuine fear of dying, or have the one who’s always been afraid of dying finally come to peace with death as they’re slipping away
  • make it so that the audience is just beginning to really like the character
  • show X’s friends defeat an enemy and when they turn back to X, they reveal they were injured
  • put the character through emotional turmoil the majority of the story, then kill them off when they’ve finally gotten back to a good place
  • make their death happen as they’re having a good time, telling a joke, or overall being happy so that it’s unexpected
  • make it so that they’re a timid character who lets people be mean to them, and they die standing up for themselves for the first time

Hello Lovee! I hope your feeling weel and are safe.

Okay so here is something I struggled with a lot and would like to ask you about: Titles.

I struggle with choosing a title that goes with my book that is unique and not too long. It's also a very important thing because it attracts you readers as well.

How do I choose an appropriate title for my book?

-Love, May

Avatar

i think a lot of it depends on what vibe you want it to have. it should match the genre and setting and make it enticing.

some of the most common examples would be:

  • naming it after the main character, first or last name (such as harry potter, jack reacher, matilda, coraline, or romeo & juliet).
  • naming it after a big event happening in the book (such as the hunger games, they both die in the end, or the hate u give).
  • or you could name it after the location in which the story takes place (such as the city of ember, shutter island, or a passage to india).
  • you could even name it after a description or occupation of the main character (such as the maze runner, divergent, doctor zhivago, the silk weaver, or the blind assassin).

make it where if someone in a bookshop spots it walking by, the title ropes them in.

cute interactions

  • X leans their head on Y’s shoulder, Y presses a kiss to X’s scalp
  • kissing in the rain/snow
  • longing stares
  • hand holding under the table
  • bonus points if X touches Y’s thigh under the table to comfort them
  • passing notes
  • glancing at each other’s lips
  • slow dancing in private
  • bonus points if they’re doing it in low lighting/refrigerator lighting

I hope you’ve recovered semi-well from COVID. I’m sorry you caught it.

I’m just going to keep asking you random questions lol. At least, until you get annoyed with them.

Do you like to color? If so, crayons, colored pencils, pens, gel pens, or alcohol markers?

-🦒

i did! i'm all better, but i'm still getting my sense of smell back.

and i do enjoy colouring! when i was little i used to only colour in highlighter, which made the pages roll up and look awful, but now my favourite is coloured pencils! i know i should have a brand preference, but i really don't, just whatever's available at hand and does a good job.

When you’re having a day- not necessarily good or bad- whats your plan? What does having a day look like for you?

-🦒

honestly i don't really have much of a plan on my bad days. sometimes i sit around, sometimes i try to get out and distract myself. i used to eat/overeat but since i had covid i've had zero appetite. it really just depends on how much energy i have that day

ship dynamics

  • X having to stand on their toes to kiss Y due to height difference
  • X being a complete ray of sunshine, Y being the thunderstorm cloud that can accidentally overshadow X
  • X is a dumbass, Y is a dumbass, and it’s only exaggerated when they’re together
  • X is a kind-hearted affectionate person who was taught to treat people with kindness and falls in love with Y, who was raised in an abusive/neglectful home and had to support themselves and learn not to get attached to people, but learns to show affection and love
  • X is deemed a “monster” and outcasted, but Y doesn’t understand and shows X love for the first time in years
  • X is an incredible academic, earning a 4.8 gpa and getting into top universities, while Y has two braincells and neither of them work
  • X is too loud for their own good, meanwhile no one can hear Y when they speak
  • X finds out Y is in love with them and confronts them, Y denies it but X won’t leave it alone until Y gets tired of it and finally admits it
  • the only time X shows emotion is when they’re around Y
  • in a case of dire danger, X is ready to step up and fight, while Y runs away as fast as they possibly can
  • X listens to classical music, Y listens to screamo
  • X is the only person who can manage to make Y laugh
  • X has sworn off love, but meets Y and instantly falls head over heels, all the while forcing themselves to not acknowledge it, but it comes out by accident

how to make a character’s death even sadder

  • kill them off while they’re at their highest, or when things are finally starting to look up for them
  • make their death a long time coming, such as an illness
  • bonus points if they’re sick and the story shows their friends trying their best to help them through it
  • give the character plenty of screen time before their death
  • make their death unpredictable, even to the audience
  • kill them halfway through the story instead of the end to show how the death has affected the other characters
  • kill them in the middle of their character arc, as they’re about to change for better
  • make it so the villain means to kill X, but accidentally kills Y instead
  • have them killed by the person they have a secret crush on
  • make them fight against their cause of death
  • make them die in a hard to find location, while also showing their friends looking for them to try to save them
  • reveal important information about the death to the audience, but not to the characters, if your pov allows it
  • kill them via betrayal from someone or something they trusted
  • have them die right before or after getting married
  • give the dead character a goal/dream they were super passionate about that they never got to complete
  • have the toughest, most serious character break down during/after their death
  • have them confess their feelings to their love interest as they’re dying
  • give them important information they never got to tell the others, which causes conflict/difficulties during a challenge
  • have them accidentally kill another character at the same time
  • such as a car accident
  • let their death be something that could’ve been prevented
  • instead of a heroic sacrifice, make their death a cruel casualty, or purely accidental
  • have their friend convince them to do something they think is harmless at the time, which results in their death
  • have them die in front of their pet, who comforts them as they die
  • cause an argument/conflict between the dead character and another character right before the character dies
  • bonus points if you include another character saying “i never got to apologize/i never got to tell them _____” and then break down crying, being comforted by someone else
  • make the character who betrayed/killed them regret their decision and wish they could’ve done things differently
  • have the dead character know that they’re going to die, but not revealing it to the others
  • have them die right after another major character death
  • make their death scene long
  • force X, preferably a character they trust/love, to choose between Y and everyone else
  • bonus points if X desperately begs Y to kill them to save everyone
  • make their death during a misunderstanding when they’re completely alone because their friends don’t trust them
  • leave behind a strong love interest that never went further than friendship
  • have them killed by their best friend, accidentally or on purpose (both hurt)
  • kill them right after they found happiness
  • have them sacrifice themself for a character they had a love/hate relationship with
  • don’t describe their death, only the aftermath
  • as they die, have them say an inside joke to the person comforting them
  • show another character rushing to save them, but they’re not fast enough and they find them after they’ve already died
  • have them convince their friends they can do a dangerous mission, only for it to result in their death
  • show their funeral in great detail, the other characters sobbing
  • alternatively, show them covering up the death and finding somewhere to bury them
  • have them have to comfort another dying character at the same time
  • make it so that the other characters don’t know about it at first
  • make another character rely on them for something important
  • give them a tragic backstory that ends in a painful death
  • as they die they confess they never really hated their “enemy”, who says something along the lines of “i know”, or “i never hated you either”

enemies to lovers (part 2)

  • X is in visible distress from a breakup and Y makes a joke about it, which causes X to start crying. Y feels guilty and has an “oh shit” moment and tries to comfort X, who doesn’t turn it down
  • continuously forgetting that they’re supposed to hate each other
  • “thank you, for saving my life. seriously, i would have died if it wasn’t for you.” “don’t mention it. but you owe me.”
  • X sees that the person that Y is in a relationship with treats them badly/cheats on them and, for some unknown reason, feels protective and threatens Y’s partner
  • X is a supernatural being and when Y gets injured, X takes their hand and also their pain
  • X gets drunk at a party and Y stays close behind and makes sure they don’t get hurt
  • X is really sad, and just wraps their arms around Y and starts crying and Y is just super confused but hugs them back
  • X is running down a hall from a predator and are suddenly grabbed and pulled into a room, a hand over their mouth. Y holds X against their body and shushes them, and they stay like this for a few moments.
  • X is about to punch Y, but Y is faster. they grab X’s wrist, and take them down to the floor. both of them remain silent while breathing heavily, and their eyes are locked. and for just a slight moment, both allow themselves to take a peek at the other’s lips before snapping back into reality. Y pulled X up to their feet and says “we never speak of this.”
  • X goes through something traumatic and tells Y about it, and they start feeling guilty, telling X “you can stay for as long as you need.”
  • X is deathly injured and Y comforts them in their last moments. they talk about how they never really hated each other and both regret being rude and hateful the whole time they knew each other
  • both of them wanting to kill and rip each other’s clothes off simultaneously
  • X is walking behind Y through a door and Y not-so-kindly slams the door in X’s face before they can enter, walking away with a shit-eating grin on their face
  • X finds Y crying and becomes defensive and demands “who did this to you?”
  • “you’re coming to me for help?” “right now, you’re all i’ve got.”
  • X teases Y when they find out about an unexpected skill of theirs, but is dumbfounded when Y busts out a perfect performance of said skill
  • X walks in on Y singing to themselves while doing chores and has a brief moment of “i might be in love with this person” so they don’t interrupt
  • X has been badly wounded, and Y agrees to help them out of guilt, and X can’t help but admire their body, which Y notices and smirks at
  • “you have to carry me.” “really?” “yes, really. i can’t feel my legs.”
  • there’s only one bed and they argue over who should sleep on the floor. they don’t come to a conclusion, so instead they end up sharing, incredibly spiteful over having to share their space
  • “are you okay?” “yeah, i’m good.” “you’re bleeding. also you got shot. i can literally see the bullet.” “i said i’m fine.”
  • X seduces Y by kissing their neck, tracing their fingers down their body. Y knows they shouldn’t be doing this but they don’t stop it because maybe it feels good and they’ve been secretly hoping this would happen the whole time
  • “you and me, never going to happen.”
  • during a dance, X is dancing with Z, and Y can’t take their eyes off of them. when X notices this, they smirk, and start dancing more intimately with Z, while not taking their eyes off of X
  • “we can go back to hating each other tomorrow.”
  • X jumping into bed with Y to “relieve stress” or to “resolve sexual tension.” they promise each other it’s meaningless, but the next night, it happens again
  • wrestling X to the ground when Y threatens them, holding a knife to their throat. “you won’t do it.” “you don’t think so?” “i know so.” “don’t be cocky.” “if you wanted me dead, i’d already be six feet under.”
  • it’s one a.m. and X knocks on Y’s door. Y is confused, before seeing X holding a dead body. “what the fuck is that?” “i need your help. please.” “fine, but if you get blood on my carpet, i’ll kill you as dead as him.”
  • every one of X and Y’s friends knows they’re completely head over heels for each other but they keep up the act and remain in denial until one day they can’t take it anymore and just slam their lips together
  • in a stressful situation, X and Y take each others’ hand and squeeze, letting each other know neither of them would abandon the other

my favorite film tropes

  • best friend’s sibling/sibling’s best friend
  • couple/best friends that are complete and total opposites but go together perfectly
  • “there is no way i am doing _____” *camera cuts to the character character doing exactly ______*
  • love at first sight
  • X gets drunk/high and confesses their feelings to Y, the person they have a desperate crush on, who also had no idea and just assumes it’s drunk rambling
  • *twirls weapon before hitting the villain with it*
  • couple made up of a sweet character & literal demon
  • character’s verbal account of current situation is contradicted by events occurring right behind them as they speak
  • witty comebacks
  • “we know exactly what we’re doing.” *cut to group doing something stupid/breaking something*
  • it's prom or another formal event and the characters are all dressed in nice, expensive outfits, but the villain shows up and the characters have to fight in their formal attire (bonus if clothes get torn and dirty in the process)
  • guy who really loves his wife/kids and won’t shut up about it
  • X is a tough character that only shows their soft side around Y
  • damaged character finally finds happily ever after in the sweetest, cutest partner ever
  • dumb & dumber
  • CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
  • really mean looking character who actually is a teddy bear and loves kids and the colour pink and is basically the complete opposite of what you’d expect
  • enemies to lovers
  • when a character’s mom takes control of the situation just by being a mom and forcing the villain into respecting the house rules (bonus if it’s at a very climactic part of the story and there was very obviously about to be a brawl)
  • “*gasp* what’s that over there?!” *character looks over and gives the villain time to escape*
  • wallflower noticed by the popular kid
  • X recognized Y after not seeing them for years and they stand in the middle of a random grocery store aisle catching up for maybe hours on end and then share a sad and nostalgic hug
  • someone thinks they’re a monster or just has low self-esteem and their friends and family gather around them and make them feel loved
  • characters hate each other but have to stick together to survive
  • huge guy, tiny girl/tiny guy, huge girl
  • “i think that went pretty well” *loud crash/explosion in the background*
  • lovers in denial
  • characters are mutually pining over each other but can’t be together because of certain circumstances
  • omniscient narrator who immediately contradicts the characters (“that’s fine,” she said. “it was not fine.”)
  • road trip romance
  • evil character becomes good
