“S-Sou-!”
Her eyes groggily opened at the sudden activity as she momentarily fought against her sheets with her arms to better respond. Eyes darting into the direction of the voice, she could now confirm it was indeed Souseiseki.

“Well, I had been asleep until now”.

A small laugh escapes the doll. She found that she’d been laughing a lot more while in the company of her medium. It was quite encouraging--a sign that she’d chosen the perfect medium.

“Ah, sorry,” she said offhandedly, realizing she’d woken the human up.

“Well, now that you’re awake, how does breakfast sound?” Did she know how to cook? No. Would she try her hand at it? Certainly, if it pleased her master.

There is a soft creaking of a case opening, and then the sound of small, light footsteps on the wood floor, echoing throughout the silent room. Hana will feel a weight crawl up onto her bed, before setting itself down next to her. A moment passes.

“Master, are you awake?”

Update/hiatus notice

So uh. I’m being admitted to a mental hospital. That means I won’t have my computer or phone, and I won’t be able to respond to messages. I’m sorry for this, but until the time I get out, I’ll be putting all my blogs on hiatus.

“I’ll do what I have been for the last decade. I’ll travel under the protection of my Lady and continue to explore that which I have not seen. Meet those who I have not known, and gain an understanding of both myself and the space around me.”
Shun had simple, but large goals in life; for the concept was easy to grasp, yet the task itself was colossal in scope. However, there was no doubt in the Herald’s heart as they spoke for it really just boiled down to just living.
“One thing I must ask, why do you keep calling me Master? I’ve done nothing to deserve your fealty, Souseiseki.”

"You were the one who woke me up, correct? I owe you a debt, then. I’ve chosen you for my master, and it seems you’ve finally accepted me as well.” She pointed to the ring on her finger. “That is a symbol of the bond between human and doll. Although I can sense you’re not quite a human, you’re apparently compatible enough for Lempicka to lead me to you.”

The bond between a Rozen Maiden and her human was sacred, a bond that could not be severed by anyone but the doll herself. Souseiseki did not take it lightly, and thus devoted herself entirely to her masters.

“If it bothers you or makes you uncomfortable, I can call you something different.”

“Being unsure is fine, you might not even have an answer now.”
A smile once more returned to the Herald. This curl of the lips reflecting the gentle nature of the one expressing it. One could akin such a visage to that of the moon, a comforting light far softer than that of the sun while still illuminating all that it touched.
“You should use this time to find that answer inside your heart. Just by gazing upon you I can feel you are more than just a creation meant to fulfill its intended person. These eyes of yours reflect as much, and I would love to see what you choose to be.”
This would be the moment as the two were close enough that any question of Shun being human could be removed. For eyes such as theirs were surreal to observe. Their appearance luminescent in a way akin to stars resting upon a clear night sky.

Souseiseki was now entirely certain that this woman wasn’t human. Her eyes were deeper than any she’d ever seen before, as if they’d draw her in and swallow her whole. It was almost thrilling to look into them.

“I’m glad you’re so confident in me, Master. I will try my best to fufill your wishes, for your sake and my own.”

What would she choose for herself? Only time could tell, but now Souseiseki herself was curious as to what it might be. Would she remain with her twin, or drift away? Perhaps she’d choose to spend her time with a particular medium?

“What about you? What have you chosen?” It was an innocent question, but it might prove to be a touchy subject for the Herald.

“That is not what I asked.”
Shun’s face did not remain bitter, yet it shifted to something akin to concern. The female moved down to rest upon a single knee to have their gazes be as level as they could. Perhaps it was due to the fact Shun was not the type to consider themselves Master over anyone? When you did not see yourself as greater than any other, coupled with their inhuman nature perhaps this was what made this case a bit more difficult for the Rozen Maiden.
“What do you want, Souseiseki? Tell me how you wish to live your life.”
A fingertip extended, gingerly pressing upon the doll’s chest just above their heart. To follow one’s heart was the only way that Shun felt a creature should live regardless of their beginnings.

“Eh? I don’t...”

It would be a lie to say that she didn’t understand, for she knew what Shun meant in theory. However, none of her previous masters had asked this of her, therefore she was unprepared.

What did she want? To win the Alice Game. No... if she was truthful, she didn’t. Then, what? As she pondered her answer, she looked down at the finger placed on her chest. It reminded her of how she often treated Suiseiseki, always wanting her to follow her own path.

“...I am unsure. I’ve never really been asked that before.”

Shun’s expression visibly soured upon hearing the latter half of the Rozen Maiden explanation. The Herald was familiar with the feeling of being created, yet not meeting the expectation of the one who made you. Rarely did this bother them, yet while they were abandoned as a failure; this small creature here was given the task to fight their own kind.
A few moments passed with it appearing as if Shun was about to say something in protest to this, but then finds themself derailed upon the second answer.
“That’s quite a long time to be asleep; what do you plan to do now that you once again reside in the waking world?”

Souseiseki watched Shun’s expression change from a polite one to a rather bitter one, not commenting on her change in demeanor. She had no idea, after all, of this girl’s past, nor was it any of her business unless her master decided it was. Speaking of masters, this girl’s body hadn’t accepted her contract ring yet. While the doll had just woken up, it usually didn’t take this long for her ring to appear on the finger of the person who wound her.

It was odd. Perhaps this woman wasn’t human after all? If that was the case, maybe she was simply incompatible with her. But no, she thought, that wouldn’t make sense. Lempicka had brought her here, so she must be.

“I will do whatever my Master wishes of me, of course.”

“You’re quite welcome, though to be truthful I was not aware you were even alive.”
Honesty was the best policy when dealing with others. Regardless of the form, Shun was the type who let their heart rest upon their sleeve. It made them easy to read, yet was another of many traits which made it clear they were not human. No matter how masterful the guise, there were just some things the Herald could not hide.
“I have a question, if you’d be willing to answer it,
Souseiseki. What exactly is a Rozen Maiden, and just how long have you been asleep?”
Technically that was two questions, but hopefully that could be forgiven.

“The Rozen Maidens are a series of seven dolls, made by a man called ‘Rozen.’ He made us in an attempt to create Alice, or the perfect girl, but failed, thus creating a new one with each attempt. He then decided that to become Alice, we must fight amongst ourselves in order to take the Rosa Mysticae of our sisters. Whoever collects them all becomes the supreme girl.”

Her explanation is accompanied by a resigned expression, as if she truly didn’t wish to fight her siblings. However, her smile returns as she amswers Shun’s next question.

“As for how long I’ve been asleep, well, I’d say about sixty-seven years now.”

Even if by chance that was just a high quality recording, be it through magic or science; Shun would have answered all the same.
“I’m Shun, the Herald of Desna. If you’re referring to the key, then yes I did.”
Should an apology be given since some tend to not enjoy being awoken in such a manner? Though so far, it seemed the day just grew to be quite pleasant. Shun would try their best to maintain this polite atmosphere, but Fate was not at their whim.

“Shun? That is a name I don’t believe I’ve heard before. All the same, it’s very nice to meet you.”

Souseiseki’s smile grew ever so slightly as she spoke; she was always quite fond of women, and although this one didn’t seem to be entirely human, the form she had chosen was quite nice, in her opinion, almost comforting.

“Thank you for awakening me, Master. It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to move.” She put a hand on her chest to emphasize her gratitude, as she often did when dealing with humans.

This scene is representative of the inner workings of Shun’s mind. Presented with something such as this doll, and the key just sitting there waiting to be used. Indeed, that golden tool called out to the Herald akin to a siren’s call. One day this type of action over caution would come to bite them, but today was not that day.
The princely doll would be cradled, held slung into the arm of the female while they were examined. It took a few moments to find the hole in their back as the divine servant had been almost captured by the craftsmanship of this doll.
Now all that was left was to wind. The turns were carefully twisted as to avoid damaging such a piece. Considering this wasn’t his belonging, it was only reasonable to be careful with it.

Slowly, after a few turns of the key, the doll starts to move. It’s just a mere twitch of the fingers at first, but soon the artificial being is taken out of the woman’s arms by an unseen force, and carried gently into the air momentarily. Then the prince lands gracefully on the floor, a small ‘clack’ of its shoes hitting the floor echoing throughout the room.

Green and red heterochromatic eyes open, and a small smile graces the doll’s features as it bows.

“Greetings. I am Souseiseki, the fourth doll of the Rozen Maidens.” The way that the words are spoken are unlike any recording; they are fluid, as if they are being spoken in real time by a person. “Are you the one who wound me up?”

When a being was biologically inclined to adapt its body to that of its surroundings by instinct, it would not be surprising that Shun would take on a different guise. Male, female, young, old, tall, short; to the Herald, it was almost like picking out a set of clothing. However, what did not change about them was their personality.
Thus, when stumbling upon this finely crafted case, an urge grew within. Curiosity often killed the cat, yet Shun was certain whatever came their way would have to be pretty impressive to slay them. Slender digits opened said box, yet the contents of which would not be what they’d expected.
Image

Inside the case, Shun wil find a large doll. It is dressed in blue, with a very expensive-looking tophat on its head. The doll is rather androgynous, with girlish facial features but the overall appearance of a boy, making its intended gender hard to determine. Next to it, there is a gold key, most likely used to wind up the antique. It almost begs Shun to try it out, to see what the doll has to offer.

The blue-clad antique looks extremely lifelike, almost as if it is simply a sleeping prince, waiting for someone to awaken them once more.
