Also, on that note, if you are mad at someone and don't tell them, you also cannot expect them to know or do anything about it. Just like you cannot be expected to be a mind reader with other people, they cannot be expected to read your mind.

And like, sometimes that's fine! I definitely don't tell people I am mad at them if there's nothing constructive that will come of it! It's just also important to keep in mind because if you are hoping for a resolution, it can't happen unless you let the other person know what's up.

one time when I was a barista I was telling my coworker that I suddenly really missed cows. I used to work with cows all the time back home and then I moved away and suddenly it had been four years and nary a cow.

15 minutes later this old guy came up to the counter with his address written on a napkin & he said “me and my wife have a whole herd of dexters and a couple of new calves. come on over any time”

so after work I was like ok fuck it & I drove to the address and I parked at the gate & I walked down the driveway to the barn and this woman was like “oh my husband told me you might stop by! come see our cows” and she introduced me to every single cow. made my whole week.

It pains me the way leftism in the US is framed as “the government is spending all their money on the military when they should be funding welfare for us :(” When in reality like maybe we shouldn’t be funding the military because it is responsible for the murder of millions worldwide and it is one of the key tools in maintaining US hegemony? It completely overlooks the fact the economic success of the US is dependent on extracting wealth from other countries and doing so through violence. Government funded programs and public infrastructure exist in any capacity thanks to the fact that the American government and all American industries (at this point in time) have amassed enormous amounts of capital off of the labor and resources of imperialized and colonized nations. This type of response to imperialism leaves the central problem of imperialism entirely unaddressed, instead focusing those who benefit from living in the imperial core. Like yes privatization in the US is especially severe amongst Western nations but… your life is possible thanks to the exploitation of people in the Global South. American leftism is just entirely lacking in internationalism. We must reject such nationalistic conclusions and impress the needs of the global working class.

Yeah when people look at the US military and only see it as an issue of incorrect use of the federal budget, they are essentially using an oversimplified nationalist framing.

It’s kind of like the left-wing version of the right wing’s complaint about disproportionately high rates of homelessness of American military veterans. Pic related:

It’s a very convenient framing for reformists (liberals), too, because from that point of view if you elect the “right” people to federal elected positions, then they can “fix” the federal budget and Spend Less On Military And Spend More On Social Welfare.

That would not work.

The US Military is one component of the Military-Industrial Complex, which is one component of the American Empire.

The US does not simply spend federal funds on its military ($820 Billion in 2023), rather, there is a domestic industry that exists to meet this demand.

The US “Defense” market was estimated at $309 Billion in 2023.

Major companies:

The US has been a huge exporter of weapons for over 100 years and is currently by far the biggest exporter of weapons.

So, there is this interconnected relationship between the US military, American weapons companies, American private military companies, the US’ military allies, American non-military-related companies, and the US government, and all of these actors exert influence on each other (though obviously some of these actors are more powerful than others). And the relationship between all of these actors is mediated by imperialist-capitalism.

I hope that people can strengthen their understanding of american imperialism as they view and react to the most recent leg of the genocidal Zionist project in Palestine.
