Aftg au where Neil is actually Kevin's half brother via a torrid affair between Kayleigh and Nathan, and Mary taking Neil and running was actually part of a convoluted revenge plot.

Anways Neil comes to Palmetto fully intending to tell Kevin the truth but then Kevin opens his mouth one (1) time and Neil understands that he can never, ever give this man older brother privileges.

1. Nathan gets Kayleigh pregant and the Moriyamas proceed to lose. Their. Shit. Kevin is one thing, but if anyone finds out about this, it is an all too short leap from "Holy shit Kayleigh Day got knocked up by a mob boss" to "Hold on, where the hell did Kayleigh Day meet a mob boss?"

2. Kengo would throw the newborn over a bridge in a canvas sack, except Nathan is adamant on keeping the kid. So they settle on paying off the doctors to declare Kayleigh's child stillborn, and on a totally unrelated note congratulating Mary Wesninski on her healthy baby boy. Kayleigh would have protested, but she dies from...complications not long after.

3. Nathan is perfectly happy with this arrangement. Mary is not. She can't decide if having Nathaniel foisted on her to raise is some insulting consolation prize or a long-term insult. She settles on "insult" when Nathaniel gets signed up for little league exy.

4. The dots click when Nathaniel is summoned to Evermore; Nathaniel is wanted, unique and irreplaceable in a way she never could be. When Mary runs, she's not wielding a gun over Nathaniel's shoulders, she's holding it to his head. He's her insurance. Nathan can't kill her as long as she holds his ticket back into Kengo's good graces over his head, ready to tear.

5. Mary doesn't tell Nathaniel the truth. She's afraid that if he thought he had other family in the world, he would try to abandon her to seek them out. She's right, he would have, but honestly that's her fault; there's only so many times you can use your son as a human shield before he stops thinking of you as a mother. So it's only when she's finally bleeding out in that car in california that she tells him the whole story.

6. Neil would never admit it, but he spends more than one cold night in Millport thinking about what would happen if he marched into Evermore and announced himself. Practicality holds him back; he would be laughed out the building with the rest of the tabloid seekers, and be dead in a ditch before he could prove a thing. The closest he will ever be to his brother is by playing the same game, and piling his impossible dreams on a relationship that never will be.

7. And then Kevin shows up, and demands Neil join him.

@lyndiscealin your addition to this post… immaculate, I wanted to draw it, I hope you don’t mind I made minor changes 😅

And did you mean for it to fit almost perfectly with the next bit, because I feel like you did, all I needed to add was one panel between - like, fix the mood in the last two panels and it’s like a seamless comic you’re a genius

Anyway THANK YOU everyone is so brilliant with their ideas and additions 💕
