Not to jump the gun, but if I was placing bets, with everything we have been hit with lately, and more to come, I think this has better than even odds. He was part of the initial read, after all, so fingers crossed. And he is not stunt casting, (though he sells like one), he can sing, act, dance, and works his ass off with promo in order to sell tickets. He’s healthy, stays fit, and is better now about exposure/time management re/fandom. He is established in NYC. He could manage a long initial run, all pluses for investors/producers. It will be poppy dramatic/rock with Welch’s music, all in Darren’s wheelhouse, and since this is her dream project, it will be infused with her imagery for this, musically and tonally. She talks a lot about the green light, at the end, so that song could be iconic.

And not to be unkind, but those folks that auditioned this read-through with him might need to be replaced in casting, if the success of Merrily, with three major stars, holds any weight now, since they took a previously unsuccessful show with a stellar pedigree, loaded it with three stars, jacked up ticket prices, and managed to give a return on investment for the producers before the end of the run. It may become the new model if they can load this original cast and make it worth that initial ticket price. This feels like it could potentially be a “Phantom of the Opera” type major production, a Tony winner on multiple fronts, and launch Florence Welch into the Broadway stratosphere as a creative musical force.

But, this show needs one or two more stars to really catapult it into the general public’s conciousness. I mean, Daisy can be a newcomer, but what a starmaking role. You have to imagine someone so captivating she can completely hold everyone’s attention. You have to see in her at the beginning what Gatsby sees. And she has to be the complete package, sing, dance, act, she will be in multiple scenes, so she has to have stamina while appearing delicate and gauzy. It is, again, a very Faustian tale, and Darren does those quite well. His acting partner will need to match that.

A musical can have a great cast, a great set, and a great director and choreographer team, but without the songs, and a great band or orchestra to support them, it will not live in people’s psyches and take on a life of its own. Sonya is a great choreographer, she will eat these Florence songs for lunch and create some incredible dance moments. This show, if well-financed, should lend itself easily to beautiful costumes and great sets.

Basically, this is a tale written around a premise the author was actually told early in life—poor boys should not think about marrying rich girls.

The narrator role of Nick Carroway is a big one, that character is actually a stand-in for F. Scott Fitzgerald, in a way, telling the tale, from beginning to end, and could be filled by a star, as could the role of Daisy’s husband. There are at least three lesser roles that still could have major scenes and songs. Even if Darren does not get it, this show has huge potential to enter the Broadway canon of legendary shows.

Paul Matthews and Emma Perkins are everything to me. They are soulmates and find each other in every universe but they almost never get past the awkwardly flirting stage before the world ends. They are both losers. They find each other every time an apocalypse commences. They are the only normal people in the whole universe. They are doomed by the narrative. They hate musicals. He tips her 5 dollars and she spits on everyones coffee. They are Orpheus and Eurydice coded. They are a spark that never turns into fire. They are intimate but don't like labels. They are the only constant thing in every timeline. They are what it could have been but never meant to be. They meet in that coffee shop again and again forever. He'll order a black coffee and she'll ask him for his name. And the loop will start all over again.
