so, so pointless – poe didn’t need to be ~edgier. he didn’t need ~ a dark backstory. he didn’t need a white woman to fuck. NONE OF THESE THINGS WERE NECESSARY
like why. i just don’t understand. they could’ve left well enough alone – poe’s flaws being ‘he’s devoted to The Cause to the cost of other’s lives and maybe Wants To Be the Hero’ a bit too much was BAD but it was also established AND COULD’VE BEEN LEFT THERE.
i am baffled at the thoughtlessness – in 2019 – of making a latinx character, who they took pains to ground in a latinx homeworld so it’s not even, plausible deniability of “well it’s space races don’t really apply”, who had a canon backstory that makes no sense with what they’ve done here, and just – didn’t give a fuck.
like what a legit, honest, complete disregard for perception or interest in representation.
and one which, i fully expect, will be completely ignored by critics of this film – like the problem isn’t the fanservice (i mean that MIGHT be the problem, but) the problem is like – if you’re going to write characters of color can you do it in a none terrible way? APPARENTLY FUCKING NOT.
