this ask is probably, what, a decade late? but i just got super into the inception fandom and... would you know any cobb-negative fics? no worries if not, the movie is almost my age lmao

do you mean cobb-negative fics as in, fics where cobb isn't a character?

or do you mean "fics where cobb is portrayed in a negative light" because if so i'm pretty sure that description applies to 90% of fics in the inception fandom, congratulations, if you hate cobb, JOIN US 😂

For recs in the latter category, I am very partial to my fic Love is Pure Gold and Time a Thief in which Cobb is portrayed (in Eames' pov) as a useless leech of all Arthur's time and talent. That also applies to my other fic "And Dance By the Light of the Moon" though it's from the pov of an Arthur who's in the process of getting over his romantic attachment to Cobb.

There are so many fics that portray Cobb as a manipulative bastard and/or just a broken piece of work that I'm not sure where to begin but here a few fics that might fit a certain vibe:

HI I THOUGHT ABOUT A JELLIOT HADESTOWN AU. NOW I AM FULL OF EMOTIONS. I wanted to make this a you problem too that’s all bye <3

Avatar

YOU HAVE MADE IT MY PROBLEM! Alas I am not suuuuuper into Hadestown but Elliot would absolutely be a huge fan and would have so many Hadestown opinions, and he would be so annoyed when everyone insisted he was the Orpheus, and specifically the Reeve Carney Orpheus, the most obnoxious and showy Orpheus, and he would pout about this for days until Jonah wryly suggested to him that he thinks the idea Elliot couldn't go an hour or two without looking for him is not only unbelievably hot but basically canon, since...... Elliot has never been able to go more than an hour or two without looking for him.

30 hours into the signup window …

and we are blowing past last year's (record-setting!) numbers. Can't hardly even see them in the rear view mirror …

Last year, at 29 hours we had 223 individual creators offering 312 auctions in 88 listed fandoms and 76 write-in fandoms.

This year? Well.

We have 354 individual creators offering 496 auctions in 106 listed fandoms and 124 write-in fandoms.

That's … amazing.

The listed fandoms with the most signups (so far!) are:

48 Good Omens 48 MXTX (works) * 40 K-Pop * 31 Sherlock Holmes * 31 Marvel * 21 DC * 21 Star Wars * 19 Teen Wolf

And for our unlisted fandoms:

5 Jeff Satur - Music Videos 4 Zhen Hun / Guardian (drama and novel) 3 Cabin Pressure 3 Control (Remedy Game) 3 Fire Emblem Awakening 3 Fire Emblem Fates 3 Schitt's Creek 3 The Goblin Emperor Series - Katherine Addison 3 Transformers 3 Zhen Hun / Guardian (drama) RPF

Over in our supported orgs, most creators are leaving the decision to their bidders, but among those who are choosing specific ones, the any/all option for the umbrella category is doing very well. Just below them three orgs keep changing places - MECA, the Young Center, and Freedom to Read are neck and neck with their positions swapping (again!) AS WE'RE TYPING this post.

Also of note, we have 26 fan labor offers - so far!

Stay tuned for deeper dives into the un/listed fandom numbers, and for a round up of the various types of fan labor on offer.

Signups are OPEN! Join us to boost your fandom's presence!

Okay. It's time for an AI rant.

My nephew is 13 years old. Whenever he writes a paper for school, I check it over and fix all of his mistakes for him. He said to me, "Maybe I'll proofread your paper for you in exchange," meaning one of the scholarly articles I write for work. I said, "Cool," and gave him the file. And he said, "Well, this is full of errors! See, you always say you have a lot to correct on my stuff, and look at all the stuff you got wrong!" And I said, surprised, "What? Where?" Because I'm sure there are typos in the draft I sent him, but not, like, that many.

And then he pointed to the screen and said, "Look at all the blue and red lines you have."

And I said, "Yeah, but those are wrong. Like, those are blue and red lines I'm ignoring because the computer is wrong." And then I paused and added, "You know you can't proofread a paper by just looking at the red and blue lines, right?" And he gave me the blankest look, because that clearly is EXACTLY what he thinks. And it became even clearer suddenly why, whenever I correct something on his paper, his immediate reaction is, "It didn't have a blue or red line."

There's a very good reason for that: THAT'S BECAUSE THE COMPUTER ISN'T SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT IT WAS WRONG.

I am so tired of being sold the idea that computers are better than humans and so we should just outsource everything to them, which is clearly the lesson my nephew is absorbing in U.S. middle school. COMPUTERS ARE NOT BETTER THAN HUMANS. Like, maybe they are better at humans at crawling through rubble to find people trapped inside. They are also better at preserving things in a searchable format. Things like that. Very limited circumstances.

I don't want to sound alarmist but everything I hear about people using generative AI freaks me out. It's not just that I'm freaked out by people being like, "I use it to write novels!" (Although I don't see how they do, I have tried to have it write fiction for me and the output was truly terrible.) But I recognize my bias around creative writing and so no one needs to credit my views on artificial writing. But! Other things are alarming, too! "I use it to brainstorm x, y, or z." But...why? Why not just...use your own brain...to...brain...storm? The computer doesn't even have a brain to brainstorm with! And you might be like, "But it comes up with things that my brain would never think of!" So would other people! You could also brainstorm with other people! Or even through Google to see what other people have thought before you (not AI). Please don't belittle the wonder of thinking.

I just feel like the marketing around generative AI boils down to "Wouldn't it be easier not to use your own brain to think about things?" Everyone. No. It would not be. Please just trust me on this. I'm not just an old person who is out of touch with technology or something. I promise. USE YOUR BRAINS. IT WILL BE OKAY.

War of Faith, ep 34.

after everything that has happened since ep 10...

...they are still looking at each other like that.

(and i am rapidly becoming obsessed with wang yang, who put his everything into shen tunan and made some Acting Choices while at it. this man is a treasure.)

Avatar

ugh i am not okay about this ship, i am well on my way to having watched War of Faith twice in a month plus several eps that are just so good you literally rewatch them twice in a row, this show is SO INCREDIBLE? Like we really all thought yibo was gonna put us through some boring communist banker show and it turned out to be this riveting, utterly gripping, intense, incredibly well-written show full of rich characterizations and non-stop action and possibly the most subtextually queer character dynamic that i've ever seen, between shen tunan (wang yang) and wei ruolai (wang yibo). we frequently say in the shenlai server that the ship is the whole show and it's not even a joke because THE WHOLE SHOW IS SHENLAI. with a side of communism but even that gets so fully subverted by the subtext that you're just left in awe of how a show that goes this hard can also have this much to say about power and corruption and also how intensely two people need to fuck about it

i've been screaming non-stop to everyone i know about this show since march so i guess now it is my turn to scream about it to tumblr.

Pleeeeeease watch this show and then come scream with me about how Wang Yang and Yibo and Li Qin all deserve every possible acting award and how unbelievably soulmated shenlai are and then please please please write fic, my crops are dying, i'm begging

Was looking in my phone for something else just now and ran across this, from 5 years ago.

"Lost In the Waves" is a beautiful song about grief, based on the composer's real father and the real way he died, and Elliot clearly knows Jonah would sing it with profound understanding, and who am I to argue.

So a free tool called GLAZE has been developed that allows artists to cloak their artwork so it can't be mimicked by AI art tools.

AI art bros are big mad about it.

Seeing as Twitter is gonna legally steal your work now, please use glaze to protect what you make.

Using both Glaze and Nightshade would corrupt the generation of pictures mimicking artist AND mess with the AI's recognition of what everything is. Like it would generate a dog when you ask for a cat.

And it would be hell for AI bros to remove the cloaked pictures from their database ʕ 👀人ʔ

I don’t mean to be rude; but I don’t think I’ve ever seen this, does anyone have any examples?

  • Supernatural
  • Doctor Who (Steven Moffat specifically)
  • Sherlock (Steven Moffat specifically)
  • Actually Steven Moffat is basically just this sentiment given human form.
  • A version of this happened with The Magicians, tbh. Though instead of expectation: men, reality: women it was expectation: smug nihilists, reality: mentally ill queer folks.
  • Arguably Game of Thrones.

If we broaden it outside of television…I think Star Wars falls into this, at least the sequel trilogy. Maybe the MCU as well. And I can’t help but think of every band that’s ever complained that their fanbase is mostly women. 5 Seconds of Summer comes immediately to mind.

In general, most white male creators seem to have this massively entitled mindset where they want–and think they deserve–the time, attention, and enthusiasm that creative fandom (i.e. the side of fandom more dominated by women) is known for.

They want our eyes for ratings, our word-of-mouth for free publicity, our metas for social media buzz, and our spending power for merch and cons. But they don’t want us. And they don’t really want the responsibility of telling a story to a thoughtful, engaged audience, regardless of that audience’s demographic makeup. They just want to be praised for whatever schlock they cough up.

And like any other spoiled brat, they will break their toys before they share them.

It goes all the way to the top for kids shows. Toy sales will crash a show. Makes sense, but if those toys are gendered for boys instead of the female viewers, they won’t usually switch up the marketing and move them to the girl aisle. They cancel the show outright.

Mind you it is perfectly possible to make the switch in marketing, but execs would rather throw it all out than have something that doesn’t perform well with male viewers. For example the Rey merch was not expected to be popular, for some reason, there had to be public outcry to get merch of one of the main 3 protagonists. A PROTAGONIST. The fact that she wasn’t a huge part of the 1st launch says a lot already.

And what happened when female fans got too invested in the Sequel Trilogy? The entire writers room didn’t necessarily lash out, but they sure forgot how to behave.

#WhereIsRey (initial)

#WhereIsRey (ongoing)

You’re all sitting on the hot take of the decade tbh

And yet when they fond out that boys were watching MLP:FIM in droves, they had NO PROBLEM with it.

The 100 too. I’ll never forget how Jason Rothenberg would attacked female fans on Twitter and mock them in interviews, and then post links to male fan discussions on Reddit to praise and thank them. In his goodbye letter to the show he SPECIFICALLY thanked Reddit and it was so disgusting.

Star Trek from TNG on was also a boy’s club, even though the TOS fans were mostly women. Women, in fact, who literally created modern fandom with their zines. But after TNG it was all, “Women don’t understand Star Trek, only smart men hur dur.”

I think it would be harder for us to find examples of when this DIDNT happen than when it did. It happens all the time.

Doesn’t stop it from boggling the mind

(though it could probably start to make some sense if you follow the money past audience bases to maybe a couple of investors or like a rich patron … 🤔)

Stooooop I just wrote a masters thesis on this shit. Media creation and distribution is a means by which dominant power structures consolidate their hegemony. Dominantly situated creators get upset when the audience they attract isn’t the audience they wanted, because they view the whole creation and sharing of the fiction as an exercise to sustain kyriarchal conditions that benefit themselves. When the audience is Other, they see it as a failure of those efforts and lash out.

Simply, they’re trying to assert a particular worldview via fiction, and upon getting confronted with something else, begin foot stamping. It’s not just men wanting male attention and gatekeeping. It’s that the fiction in the first place was an attempt to curate dominance and whoopsie! they miscalculated.

(anyway if anyone wants to read 35k words of philosophy about this, hmu)

Writers and showrunners are so misogynistic that they will literally trash their own success and future earnings rather than make things that appeal to women.

Then there’s the weird bait-and-switch that happens more rarely where a property is actively marketed to women only to punish them for watching it. Anyone remember Godless on Netflix? It was marketed so strongly as ‘badass women do badass woman things, this is a western for women!’ and then the show’s actual content was like 20% brutal sexual violence, 30% women being helpless at the whims of men, 10% racism and 40% Good Men Saving The Day (but only after the sexual violence has happened). There is no profit in that strategy, but they do it anyway, because apparently even capitalism can’t stand in the face of whatever bizarre power fantasy is satisfied by that setup.

Reblogging just to add this:

NEVER FORGET that Stargate: Atlantis was canceled midway through a successful run — its ratings had actually been increasing over its recent seasons — mainly for two reasons.

1) its producers wanted younger, newer fans that they planned to reach with Stargate Universe, a plan that went horribly (SGU was canceled after 2 seasons).

2) They wanted to maximize the profits from selling SGA dvds to "an audience much broader than the fanbase." What was SGA's fanbase? Almost entirely middle-aged women. The producers devalued women as drivers for the show's success so greatly that they decided they'd rather cancel the damn show even though it had a steady viewership and increasing ratings than continue to cater to a fanbase of primarily women.

Hikaru no Go fic rec!

My beloved forever fandom just got a HELL of a new fic drop thanks to Yuletide!

Touya/Shindou, 20,000-word slow burn post-canon BEAUTY. Absolutely spot-on characterization, smart, layered extension of all the themes of canon, brilliant approach to the existential angst at the heart of the show, a perfectly lovely, simmering, true soulmate love between Hikaru and Akira.

Truly just about as perfect as hikago fic gets.

Yuletide rec!

My Yuletide fic this year is an absolute GLORY. I requested two different fandoms, Hot Fuzz and Murdle, and my Santa combined them into a glorious crossover

It is 17,000 words and involves a full-on murder mystery complete with LOGIC GRIDS I MEAN LOOK AT THIS

It's so smart and interesting and the homages to both Hot Fuzz and Murdle are so well done!

Please go read if you're into either of those fandoms or just enjoy really cool Yuletide fics!

just got a second official warning for my use of "from the river to the sea, palestine will be free" on the OTW volunteer slack

people are also currently asking board to ban saying that the founding of israel was colonialism—equating this to saying racial slurs—and were complaining about my status back when it was "palestine will be free", too

suffice to say, fuck that place, don't give the OTW your money, and don't fucking volunteer there

(the second screenshot is from the warning I got a few days ago)

People who are sympathetic to the settlement goals of Israel frequently claim that this phrase is solely and exclusively about calling for the eradication of Israel as a state — ie that it is only ever used as an expression of antisemitic extremism — but this claim is simply not factual. In the current context of widespread pro-Palestinian protest, the phrase is most frequently used as a hopeful expression of support for Palestine, nothing more, nothing less. There's no evidence that OP is using it for some other purpose.

I hope this volunteer can get an apology from the org and their role back, if they still want it.

AO3 Top Relationships Bracket- Semifinals

This poll is a celebration of fandom history; we're aware that there are certain issues with many of the listed pairings and sources, but they are a part of that history. Please do not take this as an endorsement, and refrain from harassment.

A lot of people are focusing on wangxian's impact on ao3, which yes was an absolutely huge impact (previous to the Chinese govt.'s crackdown on ao3 following the 227 incident, most of the most viewed fics on ao3, jncluding the number 1 spot holder, were fics written in Mandarin, posted by authors in China. Not to mention the changes made after the stww fic. For better or for worse, wangxian left its mark on ao3.)

However, I also want to point out wangxian's role in helping to popularize bl in the west. Previous to the Untamed, most discussion of bl I would see was on the fringes, not taken seriously by mainstream fandom or even looked down upon. People would scoff about "weird yaoi" and view bl as unworthy of consideration, whilst enjoying those same bl tropes rewritten in western media. And I can't say that that's fully changed, but I've at least seen something of a shift with the popularity The Untamed/MDZS achieved. I've seen bigger youtubers and media sources actually talking about bl's impact on western media, using the untamed as an example. I've seen MDZS discussed in big literary journals for its unique storytelling devices, often devices it shares with other danmei, or other bl at large. And I'm hoping that with this, more people understand why bl is worthy and good art and the impact it has had on the queer community worldwide.

To me this is the impact the mdzs properties have had that compels me the most, as it's an area very dear to me. I discovered my own queerness through bl, as I found more catharsis and personal fulfillment in the tropes presented therein.
