“i dont blame myself for their looking elsewhere. im just saying that i did create and contribute to an environment that led them to feel they needed an escape. i would put myself in their world, entirely. primarily. i would do this willingly and then hate to look around and find nothing for me in sight. i was nowhere to be found. no thoughts, always after. no consideration, always prompted, always solicited. no desire for my healing or my insecurities. meanwhile, i’m in their world, their home, their space, looking for all of the things they had not yet noticed about themselves. me, inspecting them, prepping my repair crew, clipboard in hand, to come in and patch holes, touch up paint, love a little bit here, kiss a little bit there. i came so far and hard for them that they could not possibly have moved for me, let alone towards me, or in my direction. ever. they didn’t stand a chance. i didnt give them one. ever. my struggle is not just loving myself. its relaxing, being loved, being fragile. im not putting myself in the position to be cared for. i have to actively prove my worth, unsolicited. so they get so caught up in thinking i dont need, or deserve, a damn thing. how could they do anything for me if im doing everything for them? what can you do for a person who does it all? my struggle is letting people see me. but i was out of sight, out of mind. i dont blame myself for their looking elsewhere, but i cant blame them either.”

clouds. that’s it. that’s the post. || consider the clouds and how they allow us to take from them. never asking anything and withholding nothing. giving us brighter days by forever moving out the way. always dreamed about but never prayed over. (you think she knows she’s never been prayed for?) do you think that’s why she lies around all day? do you think that’s why she leaves first, and never stays? you think that’s why she cries? i think that’s why sometimes she hides. consider a cloud, accepting she’s everything we say she is, everything we make believe, anything we may perceive for our own comfort. while still being nothing at all.

Avenues || To be honest I’m falling apart. I’ve become so undone I’ve stopped working to fix it. I miss me. I miss loving a person who was worth it. I miss feeling worthy. I miss the days I thought unworthy people were worthy. That feeling of sturdy. That feeling of stable. I reach for the past like electricians reach for cables. This is a ramble. Ive got a couple texts I’m drafting to some people right now but my mind is still so scrambled. I think a tear just hit my pillow. I think I know it doesn’t matter. I think I met this feeling back when Alice met Mad Hatter. I’m always fighting for second. I’m always coming in third. Wishing that these words were pulled from another fictional world. My closest friends are miles away and it’s not their fault that they can’t reach me on my worst days. My closest friends forget my birthday. One is in his own place in Cali watching Bourne Identity. Here I am staring at white walls trying to articulate how foreign I am to me. Residue on the table just reminds me that I am able. These broken leaves smell a lot like loud thoughts. Never ran and hid with the plan of not getting caught. I forever want you to find this. I forever want you to relate. I forever keep giving more words for you to break. Down.

10 Questions to Ask an Editor Before Hiring Them

While a great editor can bring your fiction to its highest level and teach you priceless writing skills in the process, other editors can leave you in worse shape than you started—frustrated, confused, and out a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. I don’t want that to happen to you, writers! In this post, I’ll walk you through the 10 essential questions to ask an editor before you hire them, so you can make sure you end up with a winner.

Click here to get a free, printable checklist of these questions from my Free Resource Library!

Although we tend to use the catchall word “editing” to describe all work done by an editor, not all editing services are the same… and not all editors are created equal. Just like writers, they’re individuals with strengths and weaknesses. Because each book or story requires different abilities, it’s important to prepare yourself before and during the process of hiring an editor to make sure you’re getting what you need.

Here’s a list of 10 questions to ask a editor to find out if they’re right for you and your writing… before you hire them.

(Note: Some of this information might be included on the editor’s website, so you may not need to ask. But if you have any uncertainties, double-check with them! Remember, this is their job. If they’re not willing to give you the information you need, consider it a red flag and look for someone else.)

1. What editing services do you offer?

There are lots of different kinds of editing! Manuscript critiques, developmental editing (also called content or structural editing), line editing (also called stylistic editing), copyediting, and proofreading… just to name a few. Each one has a specific purpose and skill set. Don’t assume that every editor offers every kind of editing. For example, here at The Literary Architect, I offer manuscript critiques and developmental editing, but not copyediting or proofreading. Meanwhile I know other editors who provide only copyediting and nothing else.

2. Do you have a specialty?

Just as you can’t assume that every editor provides every kind of editing, don’t assume that they are equally skilled in all genres and forms. Hiring an editor can be a big investment. Try to find someone who has experience with your kind of writing. You wouldn’t want a textbook proofreader to critique your novel, or an editor who specializes in mysteries to edit your memoir!

Even if the editor appears to offer all services for all kinds of writing, ask them anyway. Most editors are more experienced with one genre, editing type, or style than another, even if they don’t say that upfront.
