Tyler and Neha
This is my second writing project for sweet elite! People were talking on how there wasn’t enough content for some of the Main 10. So here’s something for my fiancee, @karoelite.
It’s not super accurate on painting but we’ll just say Tyler did a not-very-detailed work or something. Also, I don’t know why I imagine Tyler as super chatty that’s just something I head-canon for him. My scholar, Celeste, is briefly mentioned because I’m the worst but whatever. Also, these characters are a little harder to write for because there’s not as much content but I did my best! Enjoy!
Neha sat in a small corner of the fashion department. Most students had left, but not her. Instead, she struggled over whether the dress she was sketching would need a belt.
She almost fell off her chair when a face leaned over her shoulder.
“It’s amazing! How do you even do that? The colors! I have a lot of trouble coming up with outfits for people.”
“How can you just-” Neha stopped what was going to be an acerbic rant on privacy and respecting people’s personal bubbles but the genuine awe radiating off Tyler stopped her. The dress was good (she had designed it) but it wasn’t all that. It was a sketch. It didn’t even have fabric choices yet. In fact, Neha didn’t know if she could keep Karol’s hair from clashing with the vibrant colors. A nice hat maybe? Matching a belt? Did it really need a belt?
“Hello. Earth to Neha.” Tyler waved his hand in front of her face and she looked at the gigantic smile, realizing she had zoned out.
“Sorry that happens a lot when I’m working on something. What are you doing in the fashion department?” That was softer than a scolding anyway.
“I was looking for some fabric as a texture for a watercolor. I need something sheer, I think? It’s sort of a study on-”
“Yeah. Celeste left some scraps on the table over there.” She pointed and waited for him to get out of her hair so she could continue.
Tyler’s enthusiasm only dimmed for a second. Then his whole face lit up again. How did he do that? “But what I was saying is..well. Anyway, can I paint it?” Neha shook her head in confusion, and he pointed at the notebook she was holding.
“It’s not done.” It was only a sketch. Why would he even want to paint a dress? She hadn’t ever seen him interested in that sort of thing. But he was a beautiful artist. As well as being well-known throughout the school. Maybe it would drum up sales? She could have him do a teaser of it?
“Actually, that’s fine. But you can’t show anyone until I’ve made the dress available. We can talk pay later. Not until the dress sells, though.”
Tyler immediately started chattering away about how excited he was and grabbed Neha’s hand. He dragged her out of the room before she could swat him away.
“You don’t have to pay me, dork! I’m inspired! But you will have to credit the great Tyler Williams when everyone suddenly wants a gorgeous painting of their latest outfit.” Neha tuned him out as she saw a dozen curious eyes looking at them. Well then, not everyone had left. She ducked her head and jerked her hand away. Tyler didn’t even pause for breath but was that a sidestep to give her some space?
She didn’t have time to think on it as they arrived at the fine arts department. It took her breath away every time she entered. Tyler left for a second to grab supplies and she looked at some of the new things people were working on. Neha adored all the art and tried to come in occasionally to check things out. Actually, she really admired some of Tyler’s online works, but she’d never tell him that.
He seemed to materialize a canvas, easel and palette out of thin air. “Okay it’s all set! Can you just put the sketch down on the easel? I promise to be careful!” A wink, but that just made her anxious.
“Absolutely not. I don’t need paint all over my notebook. Do you know how much money these designs are worth just by themselves?”
A sigh but he signaled for her to stand next to the easel and hold up the sketch for him. Neha almost refused but the whole school would know by tomorrow that they had been holding hands. She had to give them some sort of business to show people. Karol always said Arlington was full of “nasty gossip.” So, Neha stood by the easel and held up the notebook so that maybe Tyler couldn’t see the irritation on her face.
“Umm… Could you hold it lower? The lighting is weird.”
Well he could see the irritation now.
Tyler got to work, and she realized she had finally found something that made him stop talking. While he was painting there was no chatter and his focus seemed to narrow onto the painting. She expected him to check the sketch more, but people did sometimes whisper that he had a photographic memory. Neha found herself fascinated to just watch someone else work for a while. Tyler put his tongue between his teeth, just slightly out of his mouth.
“Hey! I do that!” He was broken out of his trance and Neha suddenly felt guilty. She always hated people interrupting her. But Tyler just smiled pleasantly and laughed.
“I used to be self-conscious about it but when I’m focused, I really can’t help it. Can you step closer? I need finer details now.”
So, did he have a photographic memory or not? But he didn’t look at the sketch just smiled at her a couple of times. It wasn’t too long before he stepped back to inspect his work. He seemed disgruntled but in a finished sort of way. What was wrong? She peeked around to check and was stunned.
“You uh..added a sash.” But that was not what stunned her. It was Neha in the painting. He had somehow made her irritation into a pleasant expression, with lips upturned and excitement in her eyes.
“I’m…I mean it’s…How did you…?” She could only trail off. The smoky background brought out the bright colors in the dress. It also brought out some sort of inner light he had painted on her. She looked happy and bright, not stressed out or cold as most people saw her.
“Know it needed a sash? I thought a belt would be too much, but a sash just blends better with the dress.” Tyler’s nervous eyes said he knew she wasn’t talking about the dress but didn’t want to push his limits after having painted her by surprise.
“I can’t put this painting up on the site.” Tyler shrugged but just kept waiting. Neha looked at herself for a long time. Then she sighed.
“You’re right.” This made his smile return but it was a puzzled look he gave her. “It needed a sash. If you’re free after this, would you mind looking at this jumpsuit I’ve been struggling with? I’m thinking stripes might not work.”
She had just thought Tyler was smiling before.
