Here’s the thing about the air nomads.

I introduced a friend to ATLA a few nights ago, and they had only known two things about the entire show: the cabbage meme, and that Aang apparently wants to ride every large and dangerous animal he can possibly find. We got through the first five or so episodes, and my friend noted that Aang is exactly what a 12-year-old would be like if given godlike powers, and that this is literally just what he could do with airbending. He can’t even wield any of the other elements, and he’s one of the most powerful people on the planet, because he’s an airbender.

And that got me thinking.

This snippet from Bitter Work is one of the few pieces of concrete information we get about the airbenders, at least in ATLA. Iroh is explaining to Zuko how all four of the elements connect to the world and to each other.

Fire is the element of power, of desire and will, of ambition and the ability to see it through. Power is crucial to the world; without it, there’s no drive, no momentum, no push. But fire can easily grow out of control and become dangerous; it can become unpredictable, unless it is nurtured and watched and structured.

Earth is the element of substance, persistence, and enduring. Earth is strong, consistent, and blunt. It can construct things with a sense of permanence; a house, a town, a walled city. But earth is also stubborn; it’s liable to get stuck, dig in, and stay put even when it’s best to move on.

Water is the element of change, of adaptation, of movement. Water is incredibly powerful both as a liquid and a solid; it will flow and redirect. But it also will change, even when you don’t want it to; ice will melt, liquid will evaporate. A life dedicated to change necessarily involves constant movement, never putting down roots, never letting yourself become too comfortable.

We see only a few flashbacks to Aang’s life in the temples, and we get a sense of who he was and what kind of upbringing he had.

This is a preteen with the power to fucking fly. He’s got no fear of falling, and a much reduced fear of death. There’s a reason why the sages avoid telling the new avatar their status until they turn sixteen; could you imagine a firebender, at twelve years old, learning that they were going to be the most powerful person in the whole world? Depending on that child, that could go so badly.

But the thing about Aang, and the thing about the Air Nomads, is that they were part of the world too. They contributed to the balance, and then they were all but wiped out by Sozin. What was lost, there? Was it freedom? Yes, but I think there’s something else too, and it’s just yet another piece of the utter brilliance of the worldbuilding of ATLA.

To recap: we have power to push us forward; we have stability to keep us strong; we have change to keep us moving.

And then we have this guy.

The air nomads brought fun to the world. They brought a very literal sense of lightheartedness.

Sozin saw this as a weakness. I think a lot of the world did, in ATLA. Why do the Air Nomads bother, right? They’re just up there in their temples, playing games, baking pies in order to throw them as a gag. As Iroh said above, they had pretty great senses of humour, and they didn’t take themselves too seriously.

But that’s a huge part of having a world of balance and peace.

It’s not just about power, or might, or the ability to adapt. You can have all of those, but you also need fun. You need the ability to be vulnerable, to have no ambitions beyond just having a good day. You need to be able to embrace silliness, to nurture play, to have that space where a very specific kind of emotional growth can occur. Fun makes a hard life a little easier. Fun makes your own mortality a little less frightening to grasp. Fun is the spaces in between, that can’t be measured by money or military might. Fun is what nurtures imagination, allows you to see a situation in a whole new light, to find new solutions to problems previously considered impossible.

Fun is what makes a stranger into a friend, rather than an enemy.

Fun helps you see past your differences.

Fun is what fuels curiosity and openmindedness.

Fun is the first thing to die in a war.

OP went and ended hard with the last line.

My Favorite Obscure Kingdom Hearts Facts!

I always forget about these but they’re absolutely wild and the IMPLICATIONS...... H M M M M M........ (these are in no particular order)

1) In the chess game in kh3, there’s a second Vanitas piece that Eraqus has captured for the entire time

2) Vanitas is the boss you fight the most throughout the whole series, but in BBS, he is vulnerable to sleep and zero gravity (unlike most of the other bosses) and also the status effects stun, freeze, ignite, and poison, which are slightly more common (though he loses some of his vulnerabilities in his last fight with Ventus)

3) The very first line of BBS is spoken by Young Xehanort. Neither of them are credited, but this line is voiced by David Gallagher in English and Mamoru Miyano in Japanese, both of whom voice Riku in their respective languages

4) In San Fransokyo, Maleficent states that the Riku there is one she knows. This makes sense when we think it’s kh1-era Riku, but it’s later revealed that the Riku in the new organization is Replica Riku, who Maleficent has never met before. However, she was in re:coded and met/kidnapped Data Riku (though I think Pete was also present for that incident)

5) In the Birth By Sleep secret ending of kh2, Ventus is left-handed and the teeth of Wayward wind are on the outside rather than the inside. This was later changed for unknown reasons (and the capes were removed because they caused too much lag in multiplayer)

However, Missing Ache, Ventus’ keyblade in ux, is held in the same hand he wears his wristband on, which is his left!! (ux sprites are only drawn from one side and then mirrored so it’s his left) This keyblade also has four reverse medal (antagonist characters) slots and is only available in proud mode, and originated in days as the first non-kingdom key keyblade you could use as Roxas

6) As of back cover and kh3, all of the black coats have an Unversed symbol on their zipper pull

7) Kairi’s hair is always based on Utada Hikaru’s current hairstyle

8) So apparently Sora completely forgot about this because he was still surprised when Vanitas’ mask came off and it’s really funny to me

9) As of limit cut, the new organization all have numbered ranks! They are: 1) Xehanort; 2) Ansem; 3) Xemnas; 4) Xigbar; 5) Luxord; 6) Larxene; 7) Marluxia; 8) Saïx; 9) Terranort; 10) Repliku; 11) Vanitas; 12) Young Xehanort; 13) Xion

10) In Japanese, Repliku’s last line was the same as Riku’s last line from kh1, “Take care of her.” :’)

Might think of more later, but I’ve hit the “10 images per post” limit so here ya go!

Here’s some more!! (Sorry so many of these are about Vanitas I just know a lot about him lol)

11) In the convoluted mess that is the keyblade graveyard stuff, Relipku and Terranort both show up to fight the guardians in their regular clothes, put their coats back on for this scene, and then take them off to fight the guardians again

12) In the shot where Vanitas in unmasked in bbs, they put his mask over his already-unmasked model, and zoomed in so you can’t see all his hair clipping through the helmet. If you look really closely at the sides of the screen, though, you can see a couple strands poking out and the mask clipping through them as it dissolves. They avoided this problem in kh3 by cutting away and then switching models instead

13) You can completely skip data Vanitas’ desperation move by hitting him when he’s summoning the keyblades, as he is the only data boss that doesn’t become invincible and/or lock you into a brief cutscene animation during his dm windup, possibly because it’s ripped directly from his graveyard fight (and then upgraded to heck, obviously)

14) If you go into rage form while in Sora’s kh2 outfit, the model is identical to anti form (also neither rage form or anti form cast a shadow!)

15) BEN DISKIN (Young Xehanort’s va) WAS IN AN EPISODE OF DRAKE AND JOSH WITH DRAKE BELL (Young Eraqus’ va) AND THIS IS THE SCENE “GOTTA GO SHAVE MY HEAD” SHKFSAGJKFDGJK

16) In Japanese, sora (sky) and kara (emptiness) are both written with the same kanji, but are pronounced differently. Vanitas is a Latin word meaning “vanity” or “emptiness”, so it’s technically a convoluted pun on Sora’s name (Also the “Vani” part of Vanitas is pronounced similarly to the English loan word “bunny” [バニー/banii] as b and v are usually the same letter in Japanese, so Japanese fans often associate him with rabbits)

17) When bbs trailers were released, people noticed that Vanitas was voiced by Hayley Joel Osmond and Miyu Irino (Sora’s va’s). After initially claiming that Nomura was going to voice Vanitas (as a joke), the explanation given was that one va (not sure which; there may have been conflicting accounts) wanted to play a more villainous character, so they cast both as Vanitas. This was, while not completely untrue, a convenient and somewhat hilarious excuse to keep Vanitas’ connection to Sora hidden until release. You can also use it on people who are playing bbs blind and wanna know why Vanitas sounds like Sora lol

18) One of Sora’s “Break Time” animations in ddd ends with a dab. The game came out several years before dabbing became a thing in the West, though, and is probably meant to be a “sentai move”, a similar pose originating in Japan in the late 20th century and often associated with Power Rangers

19) All nobodies are taller than their original selves (except Axel)

20) Days and bbs were developed simultaneously, but days came out first, so Xigbar seeing Xion as Ventus in this scene of days is actually the first appearance of Ventus’ full in-game model! Speaking of which, Xigbar being Luxu and Ventus being around in ux paints a lot of Xigbar’s frankly bizarre interactions with Ven & Sora & Rox & Xion (and every time he talks about keyblades or keyblade wielders) in a whole new light so please go back and watch them!!!!!

This is , in Japanese KH3 , based on the fact that voice actor of Ansem played the voice of Master Xehanort played by his real father.

His father, original voice actor of Xehanort, have passed away after KHDDD.

you think YOUR hyperfixations are bad? every single one of my friends from my childhood absolutely loathes the film ‘robots’ because at every playdate and sleepover i attended when i was 7 i’d force them to put it on whenever we watched a movie together, despite also watching it by myself almost every single day. i must have seen it at least a hundred times, i was genuinely that obsessed.

my friends: please……….please can we watch something, ANYTHING else that isn’t-

Some things I was disappointed with in KH 3 writing wise

Spoilers up ahead, so if you have’t seen the game, or haven’t finished it, don’t read this.

Don’t get me wrong, in the end, I really loved this, but there were some things that were very disappointing that I wanna talk about.

Totally agree. I loved the game. I did and there's no way I will not follow the series but WHAT WAS THAT WITH VANITAS?! And no Roxas and Ven interaction?! WTH?!
