I looked these allotments up because I had never heard about them before and I gotta say, the reasoning between this design - that landscape architect students from around the world apparently come to visit every year - is the funniest, most Scandinavian thing I’ve ever heard.

They were designed in the late 1940s by Danish landscape architect C. Th. Sørensen who, when asked about the oval hedges, said (my translation):

‘Neighbours always argue about their shared hedges. How should they be cut? How tall should they be? Here, everyone gets their own hedge with a no man’s land in between. This way, nobody has to argue about it!’

This man literally created a landscape design that is still admired by professionals in his field just so he could avoid talking to his annoying neighbours. Incredible.

My mom recently send a video (that she recorded off the computer with her phone…) of my younger brother’s middle school band concert to my siblings and me, and texted this:

An extraordinary Acheulean handaxe knapped around a fossil shell circa 500,000-300,000 years ago.

The maker appears to have deliberately flaked around the shell to preserve and place it in a central position. As a result this handaxe has been described as an early example of artistic thought.

Half a million years ago. Whoa

i saw this bad boy in person

It's incredible

It was made by HOMO ERECTUS you guys

Like. We were making art before we were "human" in the generally accepted sense

It was almost certainly sacred then. And when you are close to it, it feels super sacred now
