"Half of England is owned by just 1% of the population. According to research by author and campaigner Guy Shrubsole, individual homeowners hold just 5% of the country’s land, while the aristocracy owns 30%."

This was a big turning point in UK land management, and also its social fabric - the Enclosures Act. It took almost all the common land that poor people (quite literally, commoners - this is what the term means) were using to graze their animals for free, and put it into private ownership, meaning those commoners now had to pay the new owner for the grazing.

No one could afford it. This caused rapid and widespread rural poverty, and drove people en masse to the cities for work - just in time for the Industrial Revolution, which needed bodies to work the factories. It decimated rural society and culture. And by now, we see the opposite - rich people moving to the country, because they're the only ones who can afford it.

Being a young adult is so strange. You enter a coffee shop. The 20 year old girl waiting behind you cried all night because she just came to a new city for university and she feels so alone. That 27 year old guy over there works a job he is overqualified for, he lives with his parents and wants to move out but doesn't know what to do about it. That one 24 year old dude already has a car, a house, and a job waiting for him once he graduates thanks to his dad's connections. The 26 year old barista couldn't complete his higher education because he has to work and take care of his family. The 28 year old girl sitting next to you has no friends to go out with so she is texting her mother. That couple (both 25 years old) are married and the girl is pregnant. The 29 year old writing something on her laptop has realized that she chose the wrong major so she is trying to start all over. We are not alone in this, but we are actually so alone. Do you feel me

interesting fact i have titanium in my spine

Fun Fact!

Titanium not only is crazy durable, but it noo magnet! Thas wy Dock chok jjiun spi; surgyr ad pater noster, qui es in cœlis; sanctificetur nomen tuum: Adveniat regnum tuum; fiat voluntas tua, sicut in cœlo, et in terra. Panem nostrum cotidianum da nobis hodie: Et dimitte nobis debita nostra, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris: et ne nos inducas in tentationem: sed libera nos a malo.

dude got hit with the ol’ Lorum Ipsem beam😞

Fun fact! Titanium is often used for medical implants because it's *dodges lorem ipsum beam* because it's strong, nontoxic, won't corrode inside the body, and best of all, *dodges* bone will directly grow onto it! This is called "osseointegration" and it means that your titanium artificial hip, dental implant, or whatever will have greater *dodges* greater mechanical stability and will ARRRGGH! aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit!

I recently had surgery, and at the time I came home, I had both my cat and one of my grandma's cats staying with me.

- Within hours of surgery, I wake up from a nap to my cat gently sniffing at my incisions with great alarm.

- I was not allowed to shower the first day after surgery, and the cats, seeing that The Large Cat is not observing its cleaning ritual, decided I must be gravely disabled and compensated by licking all the exposed skin on my arms, face, and legs.

- I currently have to sleep with a pillow over my abdomen because my cat insists on climbing on top of me and covering my incisions with her body while I sleep (which is very sweet but not exactly comfortable without the pillow). She also lays across me facing my bedroom door, presumably on guard for attackers who may try to harm me while I'm sleeping and injured.

That's love. 🐈‍⬛🐈❤️

cats are so very unclear on what is wrong with us but they want to help

Last time I had a really bad migraine my cat curled herself round my head and purred sympathetically, and actually stayed there through two of her normal mealtimes. It wasn't until I was able to stagger to the kitchen and grab a protein bar for myself that she gave a very small, polite miaow to the effect of "while you're up... could you get something for me too?"

i learned about Tim Wong who successfully and singlehandedly repopulated the rare California Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly in San Francisco. In the past few years, he’s cultivated more than 200 pipevine plants (their only food source) and gives thousands of caterpillars to his local Botanical Garden (x)

Sometimes, people are really great.

This is also an example of picking One Thing and putting most of your Better The World efforts there. We have so many different important issues to care about and act toward, and it’s tempting to try and do a Little for Many Things - and I’m not saying that little bits of effort don’t add up! They do. But often you’ll make a bigger impact (and possibly have less compassion/activist fatigue) if you direct the majority of your efforts toward one or two things.

So we all know that Tumblr is US-centric. But to what degree? (and can we skew the results of this poll by posting it at a time where they should be asleep?)

Lmao how is this real, "the ambient sounds of the world were wrong, sir"

Imagine paying Columbia-amounts of money to be taught by someone with kindergarten-level art literacy. Like, motherfucker, the wholeass point of 4’33” is to emphasize how every performance of live music is inextricably linked to the ambient sounds of the context in which it is performed!!!!!!! Paying attention to and thinking about the context of the performance is the point of the song!!!! If the point was to hear birds chirping and people walking, John Cage would have fucking recorded that instead. Insisting that art is only good when contains good things and makes you feel good things is baby-level art criticism. How the fuck is this dude a professor.

Actually I’m not done going off yet. This pisses me off so much. How can you teach the humanities and be so obstinately ignorant? Like bruh, if the chanting outside makes you feel uncomfortable and upset, maybe you should take about four and a half minutes to contemplate why you feel that way. During that time, you might consider things such as: why are there students chanting? What are they protesting? Why do they feel so strongly about this issue that they’re willing to disrupt their lives to bring attention to it? Should I also feel as strongly? Should I be protesting with them? Is my desire for silence more important than the students’ desire for justice? Why do I find the noise they’re making more upsetting than the genocide they’re protesting?

Being like “loud noise make me angy 😠” is so fundamentally incurious and baby-brained it’s honestly unbelievable

Also, notably, 4’33…. Doesn’t exactly do that? It’s not a formal “This is what You, The Audience Does” thing, like with On Paper or a similarly instructed audience-oriented collaborative piece. The performer PERFORMS the silence, so to speak. If the students are presenting it, the professor is an audience member, and discomfort and frustration is very much so within the scope of Cage’s intent for 4’33. It’s not a guided meditation. It is forced discomfort enacted by a musician literally playing the audience by refusing to perform as expected. The discomfort was what made the piece worth performing to begin with.

Like. Even performing 4’33 outside of a concert setting is a modification of the original artistic intent of the piece, very famously. Part of WHY the piece is so well beloved within the sound art community is that the piece can never be performed novelly again, for the most part, as the whole audience must both expect concert halls to Be a certain way and Not expect 4’33 to capture the original performance’s affect.

I’d go so far as to say that telling the performers that it won’t sound right so you shouldn’t perform it is like. The least John Cage thing I can think of in many regards.

client call

client : doctor, my cat won’t eat after i feed her the pills. Can i stop giving her pills?

me: the prescribed pills don’t have such side effects. it’s only one day left, i suggest that you keep giving her until tomorrow. However if she’s having bad appetite i suggest you bring her in for further examinations

client: but she has good appetite! she’s eating normally!

me:…

Literally had this happen today. Guy called last night to say the dog was vomiting, having diarrhea, and an extremely poor appetite. Despite being already massively overbooked on procedures and drop-offs we let the guy bring his dog this morning. He fills out the drop-off sheet and I go to get a more detailed history

Me: okay, and it says here her appetite is down. How long has that been going on and is she eating anything at all?

Owner: oh, she's eating great! No issues with her appetite.

Me: But... you wrote it yourself, right here, that she has a decreased appetite...

Owner: *ignores me, goes on a tangent about the dog*

The lies I get told. For real, the utter, entirely bizarre lies.

Though my favorites are creative wording. No doc, that pup couldn't have gotten into any weed. My roommate does make 'artisanal baked goods' though.

...

SIR. Do you mean pot brownies?

He meant pot brownies.
