My elementary school had drills telling us what to do in such an emergency. This is exactly what they told us. AND NOW FOR A FACT: IN CALIFORNIA YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REGISTER A SHOTGUN!

I don’t know how I feel about this.

I know I’ve reblogged this before but I still don’t know how I feel. I think in some very specific situations it’s good, but honestly I’ve never been actively taught this.

I’ve gone through active shooter training four times now. Never have we been told to do this. It’s always been about getting out as soon as you can. I understand the point of this post is you don’t know where the shooter is and he may shoot you as you’re running.

But moving targets are hard as shit to hit. Someone lying down pinned under another body? Easy. What if you breathe and he sees it? What if you can’t control a flinch or a twitch and he sees it? You’re a sitting duck.

What if the shooter is just so sadistic that he goes around shooting already “dead” bodies for good measure?

Maybe there are situations where this could help, but from what I’ve been taught, again going through training four times, is to scatter, hide, and as soon as you can, get out. Moving and loud targets are harder to hit.

If you’re trying to get out and you encounter the shooter, scream, yell, make as much noise and distraction as possible. Throw things at him, throw anything and everything you can. If you’ve got strength in numbers, make a plan to overwhelm him. Even if he’s got a gun, I’d five people are bombarding and then tackling him, he’ll be overwhelmed.

I guess if you have no other choice this can help, but it doesn’t sit well with me. Just like engaging in a traditional lockdown, I feel like this could trap you more than help you.
