In Celtic mythology, the leannan sidhe (“Fairy-Lover”) is a female fairy, sometimes called a poet’s muse for her gifts of inspiration and charm. Yet for all she gives, this fairy lives off of and drains the life force of her human lover, who remains her slave until he can find someone else to take his place. Lovers of leannan sidhe are said to live brief, though highly inspired, lives. Muse offers inspiration to an artist in exchange for their love and devotion; however, this frequently results in madness and even premature death for the artist. Sometimes leannan sidhe is described as fairy with vampiric tendencies. (from “Celtic Mythology A to Z” and Wikipedia) Description of leannan sidhe in “The Book of Fairy and Folk Tales of Ireland”: “She is the Gaelic muse, for she gives inspiration to those she persecutes. The Gaelic poets die young, for she is restless, and will not let them remain long on earth.”
