A New Interactive Novel

A Tale of Crowns is a high fantasy romance with Middle Eastern roots, free to play on pc as well as mobile! It’s entirely text-based, with choices throughout to shape both your main character’s personality and skills as well as influence their relationships with others. There are four love interests for you to choose from, both female as well as male, each with their own stories and secrets for you to uncover!

The game itself is currently a work in progress, where each new chapter will be released as I finish it.

Total wordcount and progress: 466k / 11 chapters Average words per playthrough: 230k First published: 19 July, 2019 Last updated: 31 August, 2023 Art by @artbygaia

CONTENT WARNINGS: Depictions of violence, injuries and blood, death, trauma, psychological and physical body horror, sexually suggestive content and descriptions of animal cruelty. Safe to play for those 16 years and older.

THE STORY

Their parents murdered and the previous Crown of Arsur assassinated, your character finds themselves on the run as they’ve been bestowed with the golden eyes that mark them as the new Crown.

Unseen enemies at their heels, will they succeed as the Crown, or will they lead to the downfall of the Empire?

THE SETTING

The story takes place in Arsur, a fictional empire within a fantasy universe that draws inspiration from historical settings in the Middle East. Much of it is based on Kurdish culture, drawing from my own experience as a Kurdish woman.

Your character was born and raised in Arsur, where magic is considered a skill no different from reading or writing. Gender, sexual orientation and race have no bearing on social position or class; it is instead only based on wealth and level of education.

The Arsurian Empire itself is overseen by a single ruler known as the Crown. Unlike traditional monarchies, however, the title is not inherited through blood. Whenever the Crown dies, their famed golden eyes pass on to the one chosen by the spirits of this world to be the new Crown: this appears to happen at random, as Crowns in the past have ranged from the poorest farmer to the wealthiest noble.

CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION

At the beginning of the story, you’ll have the opportunity to customize your Crown’s name, pronouns, sexual orientation and their skill in magic. You can also customize many parts of your Crown’s appearance: hair color, hair texture, hair style, skin color and height are all up to you and will be reflected in the story as well. Their backstory and ethnicity are the only things that are locked in. The Crown is also locked in as a person of color, as is in line with the setting - their specific race is up to the player to imagine.

As for your Crown’s personality, there are twelve different character traits in total that will be decided based on the choices you make in game. This will subsequently change your Crown’s behavior during story scenes.

The character traits are: Charming/Blunt, Kind/Calculated, Intelligent/Intuitive, Cautious/Adventurous, Flirtatious/Reserved and Assertive/Passive. Some of these will mix and interact with each other in different ways as well!

THE LOVE INTERESTS

Depending on what your Crown’s sexual orientation is, the gender of the love interests will change accordingly to match that. There are four of them in total, and regardless of their gender their titles are as follows: the Sorcerer, the Hero, the Protector and the General, as depicted in the character art above. Each love interest will have their own route which you will get to choose from at the end of the common route.

Vetted fundraiser masterpost-masterpost.

This is a collection of links to various posts concerning fundraisers I've vetted and instructions on how to submit fundraisers to me. These are primarily ones for Ghazzan families although some fundraisers for Sudanese families are also listed (I'm more familiar with my own country's politics and dialect and am more capable of vetting fundraisers for Palestinians as a result). Each post will have a time stamp indicating the latest date of update. And fundraisers will have colour-coded disclaimers according to the particularities of their case.

I know that people do not like clicking on links or navigating between posts, but please actually look through these posts and choose a fundraiser to donate to. Please.

hi, longtime reader here checking in after a while, i hope you don't mind asking but i noticed you seem to go by qeresî now instead of cherry! was there a reason for the name change/is it ok to still refer to you as cherry? just curious!

There's no big reason for it!

I changed it simply because 'cherry' is a pretty popular alias for people to use online, it's one I randomly chose ages ago before I started writing IF, and I wanted to differentiate myself as an author by picking something more unique 💀

Plus, 'qeresî' is just a Kurdish word for cherry, so yes I'm totally fine with people still using cherry when referring to me as well 💖🍒

i did it cherry, i finally got my high route with X 😭😭😭😭😭😭 as it's almost 5 am, i can now finally go to sleep and pretend like i don't have exams to study for 😌🤧 i am absolutely in love with Rozerîn but i would swallow Xelara whole if i could. im not ashamed 💅🏻 anyway, just wanted to dump some love for X and your game, i don't know how many times I've played it!!!! thank you truly for the best experience i had in a looooong time.💗💗💗💗

Been following AToC since Covid started and coming back to the game after 2 years have passed and I'm sucked into the story once again! Really love the development of the story and especially the LIs (Rozerîn you have my heart <3). Hope this isn't too spoilery but I wonder, how old were the LIs when they met each other? Been reading the newer chapters and have noticed how some of them seem to have known each other longer than I thought.

Good question, actually! I hope this doesn't end up looking too much like a math equation lol, but here goes:

R (20) -> X (24), known each other for 4 years

R (18) -> A (21), known each other for 6 years

A (20) -> D (23), known each other for 7 years

X (21) -> A (19), known each other for 7 years

X (19) -> D (21), known each other for 9 years

R (14) -> D (20), known each other for 10 years

So basically, the first person R met was D and vice versa, the first person A met was X, and the first person X met was D.

Note that "known each other" does not necessarily mean close for that entire time.

R and D, for example, first met when R was quite young because D was appointed as General at that age and R was already at the palace as Zerya's student at that point, so they naturally ran into each other. While they were cordial, they didn't develop a friendship until R became older and had to assume the role as Sorcerer.

Same goes for A and D: A first met D as a soldier still in the Imperial Army and only knew them in passing/as their superior. They didn't get to know each other better until A climbed up the ranks a bit.

can i just say, having played all the LI routes and loving them all, i especially adore that in the R route *specifically* the crown literally just turns into such a poet (spoiler lines for R's romance) "you're like a star cradled in my hands", "your arms must be where the sun sets", "you'd make roses wither with envy" no offense how does R not just implode on the spot and WHERE does the crown get this INSANE rizz from, if R doesn't marry them I WILL

In case you don't know, but the last names the game gives you as options for your Crown are all taken from Kurdish poets- so you can say that an inclination of poetry probably runs in their family, and R is just the right muse to bring it out of them ✨💖

Just finally got around to playing the latest chapter,and Xelef's kiss!!! Oh my God🔥. Makes me regret your decision to stop at implied sexual content because you're a very good writer, though I understand how hard the coding would be and that you have to do what's best for you. I love all your characters and can't wait for more with them❤️❤️.

Honestly, I really wish I could've stuck with having a nsfw version!! But yeah, as is, it's just too much coding to get into.

I have been flirting with the idea of releasing standalone nsfw scenes for each LI as snippets on my Patreon though, so that I can work on it at my own pace and minimize the amount of coding involved, but I don't know when/if I'll ever get around to doing that. I'll keep you posted!!

Glad you enjoyed the kiss scene though, lots more spicy moments like that to come for X and the other LIs 🤭

i'm only now revisiting ATOC, and rekindling my love for this wonderful novel you've wrote. the amount of times i've paced, shrieked, and giggled about D's route should be monitored. i've genuinely grinned so wide, especially due to the recent update. the rest of the cast making hints at the crown's and D's relationship makes me so happy, as well. <3 i'm normal about D

Lots more bullying (lovingly) from the rest of the cast about D and the Crown's relationship to come, don't you worry 🙏🏼

Holiday Drop: Patreon Bonus Stories II

Hey everyone!!

I know I haven't been as active with updates and posting on the blog in general over the past few months. Progress on CH12 has been painfully slow going, though I'm still working on it, and hope the new year will kick my ass into gear 🙏🏼

In any case, I've decided to make it up to you by releasing extra Patreon snippets.

A whole bunch of them, actually. If you'll recall, back in October I released 1 snippet for each LI, this time I'm releasing 4 snippets for each LI showing scenes from the game told through their point of view, with a combined wordcount of 9052 words.

The snippets included in this file are:

  • Meeting the Crown for the first time
  • Comforting the Crown after the nightmare in CH3
  • Seeing the Crown dressed up for the first time in CH4
  • Seeing the Crown's coronation vision in CH7

I've also included snippets showing how the Crown's parents met each other, how X met Tûjo and Heval, and how Perjin met R told from Perjin's perspective.

You can download the file from this link. It's a zip file, so you'll have to unzip it ("extract all" option after right-clicking it), then open up the index.html file in any browser of your choice. Just make sure not to move any of the files outside of its folder, or you'll break the images/fonts!

If you enjoy these snippets, consider pledging to my Patreon! You can view the total list of available snippets for each tier in this Google doc, it'll be updated as I add more stories each month.

Thanks so much for all your support over these years, hope you enjoy these bonus snippets.

Happy holidays!! 💖

btw! I was made aware that many people don't know that we're boycotting Eurovision this year, so.

we are boycotting Eurovision, as per BDS guidelines.

don't watch the stream, don't engage with the videos, don't post it about it on social media using hashtags that are going to trend. whatever you're getting from the show isn't worth it

So, there's a dirty little secret in indie publishing a lot of people won't tell you, and if you aren't aware of it, self-publishing feels even scarier than it actually is.

There's a subset of self-published indie authors who write a ludicrous number of books a year, we're talking double digit releases of full novels, and these folks make a lot of money telling you how you can do the same thing. A lot of them feature in breathless puff pieces about how "competitive" self-publishing is as an industry now.

A lot of these authors aren't being completely honest with you, though. They'll give you secrets for time management and plotting and outlining and marketing and what have you. But the way they're able to write, edit, and publish 10+ books a year, by and large, is that they're hiring ghostwriters.

They're using upwork or fiverr to find people to outline, draft, edit, and market their books. Most of them, presumably, do write some of their own stuff! But many "prolific" indie writers are absolutely using ghostwriters to speed up their process, get higher Amazon best-seller ratings, and, bluntly, make more money faster.

When you see some godawful puff piece floating around about how some indie writer is thinking about having to start using AI to "stay competitive in self-publishing", the part the journalist isn't telling you is that the 'indie writer' in question is planning to use AI instead of paying some guy on Upwork to do the drafting.

If you are writing your books the old fashioned way and are trying to build a readerbase who cares about your work, you don't need to use AI to 'stay competitive', because you're not competing with these people. You're playing an entirely different game.

I've been mulling this post over since I reblogged it this morning, and if Malcolm doesn't mind, I'm going to clarify for a few people who might be wondering: If these people aren't playing the same game as us other indie authors, what game are they playing?

The answer is that they're playing the algorithm.

It'd be so easy to drop this at Amazon's door, but quite frankly, all book retailers reward this behavior. If you are pumping out work regularly, the sales algorithm will reward you because it keeps you relevant. I'm not talking about authors who produce one book a year or even two or the few people who are genuinely that prolific.

I'm talking about the above people, who, let's face it, treat indie publishing as a form of content farming.

I have zero issues with authors who use ghostwriters, especially when they're honest about it. (James Patterson is a notable example.)

But the people who hide it or attribute it to their "hustle game" while claiming we're all in competition with each other are not competing with writers; they're competing with other Algorithm Gamers because they've realized that no matter the quality of their work, as long as they have something in the New Release category, they're making money.

They're competing to stay relevant in terms of quantity, not quality because they don't actually have anything to say.

It's all just clicks to them -- and I'm willing to bet they make more money from getting people to click their (usually undisclosed) affiliate links than they do their actual books.

So take heart, dear writer. You are not competing with these people.

The vast majority of us don't view the rest of our community as competition. We're just trying to get our own work out the door while also supporting our friends as best we can.

Work at your own pace. Make the art you want. Support other writers. It'll be worth it. I promise.
