Peter wasn't expecting a call -- on New Years' Eve no less.

The holiday had lost some meaning to him -- with the death of his sister -- well the day had never been the same. The day was only ridden with memories of trying to stay up with his sister to midnight, often with her falling asleep on his shoulder.

He sighed, rubbing a hand down his face. It was memories like that made him not want for celebration, but rather to treat this day like any other. It was safer for him. Easier than falling into old habits of numbing the pain with whatever was available. His fingers drummed on the desk, glancing at the time: 11:15 PM.

Only 45 minutes left, he thought, leaning back in his chair in his office, and he'd be greeting the new year in his office. Alone.
