“Sucks.” The young man reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a crumpled carton of cigarettes to offer her one. “Me, I’d never be friends with someone who expected me to get through a party sober.”
Maria eyed the carton and shook her head slightly.
“I don’t, but I appreciate the offer,” she told him. “I don’t mind. Chronic responsibility syndrome, you might say.”
She tossed back her tequila shot and pursed her lips when she realized she’d forgotten a lime slice. Again.
“Perdon, I forget my manners sometimes; Maria,” she introduced herself, offering her hand. “You are?”

“Sounds like quite the affliction. Is it deadly?” He smirked, sliding the cigarettes back into his pocket. “Jasper,” he answered, taking her hand and shaking it heartily.

“Oh yeah.” He rubbed the stubble on his chin thoughtfully. “Forgot about the newspaper. You know, you could have gotten away with that one if you hadn’t mentioned it again.” He shrugged. “And anyways, why the fuck should I give a shit what anyone says about me?” There was a brief pause, but he spoke again before she had a chance to. “That said, what have you heard?”
“That you’re an ass on even the best of days, and if I get involved with you in any way I’m going to break my heart over it,” Maria sighed. “And the fact you ask means…maybe you do care but you don’t want people to know.”
She quickly raised her hands before adding, “Merely an observation, nothing more, if I’m wrong I’m wrong. But I’d like the chance to form my own opinion first.”

“Care?” He snorted. “Nah. Scientific curiosity, please do not confuse it with actual interest.” A mindset he had learned from certain parties, very early in his life, and one he’d be hard-pressed to ever abandon. “Sounds about right, anyways. I’m a shitty guy, you should stay away from me.”
