LEGEND Press Conference [TIFF 2015] x
Reporter: Our question is for Tom Hardy. In the film your character Ronnie is very open about his sexuality. But given interviews you’ve done in the past your own sexuality seems a bit ambiguous. Do you find it hard for celebrities to talk to the media about their sexuality?

Tom Hardy’s characters frighten him too — but he can’t stay away
There are two very different Tom Hardys.
There is the Hardy moviegoers have gotten to know onscreen, an actor with a brooding intensity and a special flair for playing hard, sometimes vicious men in films like “Bronson,” “Warrior,” “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Then there is the offscreen Hardy, a sensitive softy who loves dogs and giving out hugs and who, speaking by phone from his home in London on a recent afternoon, talked excitedly about the imminent prospect of becoming a dad for the second time: “I’m waiting on a baby to land. It could be any minute!”
That more gentle and thoughtful Hardy — Tommy to his friends — is just as frightened as everyone else by the kinds of forbidding alpha-male characters he has often played. (“I’m as masculine as an eggplant,” he once told an interviewer.) In a strange way, that fear is exactly what draws him to those roles.
“I think things that frighten me are compelling and I want to understand them,” Hardy, 38, explained. “Wherever I go around the world, there’s always somebody out there who’s a bit scary and I’ll collect that. Or animals — I’ll learn from animals as well.” He laughed. “Though you can’t really talk to an angry orangutan in the same way you can talk to a lot of people.”

Playing a real person, for me, means that there are parameters and clear rules and facts. Certain dates that you can’t mess with and certain looks and silhouettes you can’t argue. That’s what Napoleon looks like, we know that. Well, actually we don’t - just from paintings… But you know. The Hat. We know he’s got the hat. You’re going to be judged on people’s understanding and knowledge and memory of a specificity.

- Tom Hardy talking about Legend in his own, specific way. I love the way his brain works, bringing Napoleon into his answer. It’s amazing. (X)

Tom Hardy and Nicholas Hoult interviewed in Cannes.

Apparently, because they were in such barren land, and because they couldn’t talk emotions, they communicated via giving each other gifts… Tom mentions haberdashery and arts & crafts. And says he made Nick a necklace and a bracelet. And Nick made Tom a hat and gave him a piece of rock he found because it made him think of Tom…

I know Nick’s said he started knitting on set, so he probably knitted that hat!. And I love how they sort of mime the act of giving each other these things.
