Supanova guests, Bajo and Hex have released their debut novel, Pixel Raiders: Dig World, the first in a new series! You can purchase Pixel Raiders at Sydney and Perth Supanova expos from our official booksellers, who will be situated directly next to the Supanova Author Signing Area. Bajo and Hex will be offering free signatures and selfies with fans who purchase a copy of Pixel Raiders.

To let you know a little more about the book, we have asked our mini Supa-reviewer, Sophia (aged 10) to let us know a bit about Pixel Raiders:

Pixel Raiders Dig World

Book Review
 by Sophia

ABC3’s Good Game Spawn Point’s Dex and Bajo have written an amazing new book, Pixel Raiders Dig World. It tells the story of Rip and Mei, the best video gamers in their school. After their failed attempt at the gamers’ competition, the IN-REAL GAMES, Rip and Mei receive a Top Secret box delivered to their school, addressed just to them. The second they put on the virtual reality glasses in that box, their world is turned upside down and they find themselves in the IN-REAL GAMES’ Dig World! Rip and Mei, who didn’t know each other well before this point, are now forced to team up and combine their incredible skills to make it out alive.

Now that Rip and Mei must begin an exciting adventure in Dig World, they must face sombrero-wearing spiders, fire lizards, flame tigers, fellow competitor Angela and all the monsters that come out at night! They are both extremely competitive and have amazing personalities. They’re both intelligent, logical, excellent gamers and are pretty kind; it doesn’t take long for them to discover their similarities and become fantastic friends. However, their competitive spirit makes them enjoy outwitting each other too!

Overall, this book is as fantastic to look at as it is to read! The mix of cartoons and pixel fonts gives the reader a real gamer experience. The fonts change from regular to pixel font while you are in Dig World which captivates the reader and makes them feel like they’re in Dig World. The book is thoroughly appealing to 6 to 12 year old and the characters are easy to relate to as well. I recommend this book to people who enjoy fantasy, humour, adventure and, of course, video game action!! Hex and Bajo have done a superb job in creating this new adventure series!

There are seven Supa-Star authors waiting to meet you at Supanova Gold Coast 2016! They’re located inside the Exhibition Hall, just behind the Imagineer’s Playground stage. With so much local and international writing talent all gathered in one place, it would be unthinkable to miss the chance to meet the people behind some of the most exciting stories around! Don’t worry if you haven’t already discovered their work – copies of their books are available to purchase right next to their signing area so that you can begin exploring the new worlds they’ve created right away.

Maria V. Snyder has travelled from the US to meet Aussie fans! This meteorologist turned award winning fantasy author is a favourite of geek icon Felicia Day and recently released Night Study, the fifth book in her Study Series. Maria prides herself on being a stickler for research. With the goal of making her stories realistic, Maria has learned how to ride a horse, pick a lock, learned how to fence, toured a maximum security prison, worked with molten glass and studied Issinryu Karate.

Wanda Wiltshire writes the fantasy romance series Betrothed. The three books in her series (Betrothed, Allegiance and Confused) follow the magical world of Faera, accessed via sunbeams. Wanda draws inspiration for her writing from the landscapes around her family’s home here in Australia.

If apocalyptic, dystopian stories are more your thing, you’ll be pleased to know that Supa-Star Justin Woolley has you covered. A Town Called Dust and its follow-up novel A City Called Smoke track the remnants of mankind surviving in the desert, kept safe from the plague of undead ghouls by a large border fence… until the fence falls.

Sydney local Mitchell Hogan’s novel A Crucible of Souls won the 2013 Aurealis award for Best Fantasy novel. Its sequel, Blood of Innocents, was released in 2014 to readers who were hungry for more! Mitchell Hogan credits his love for fantasy stories to his introduction to Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit at age 11 – a love we’re sure many of us share with him.

If novellas that pack an emotional punch are what you’re looking for, you’ll find it in Marlee Jane Ward’s Welcome to Orphancorp. The winner of Seizure’s Viva La Novella 2015 and The Victorian Premiers Literary Award for Young Adult Fiction, Welcome to Orphancorp offers a heartfelt, brutal and moving story with characters that will stay with you long after you’ve finished the book.

Queenslander Lynette Noni’s Akarnae, the debut novel and the first book in Noni’s The Medoran Chronicles, has been described as Harry Potter meets Narnia meets The X-Men. Sound intriguing? The good news is that Lynette’s second book in the series, Raelia, was just released and is available to purchase here at Supanova so you can keep the story going!

Maria Lewis’s list of achievements could take up an entire tumblr post by themselves. A fellow lover of pop culture, this former reporter has also been a pop culture commentator, appearing on SBS, ABC, Nine and many more. She is the producer and co-host of the Eff Yeah Film & Feminism podcast, which looks at feminism within the pop culture sphere. Her debut novel Who’s Afraid? was released this year and has already gained a rabid fanbase.

In partnership with Petrie Press, we’re proud to present The Banksia Project.

The Banksia Project is the first initiative of its kind and provides an amazing opportunity for emerging women comic creators to hone their convention skills, and to help to raise the community through sharing, learning and visibility.

One recipient will be chosen per Expo city in 2016, and will receive Supa-Star status at Supanova, alongside mentor and Platinum Ledger Award winning creator and publisher Alisha Jade.

The initiative includes:

  • Coaching and support from Supa-Star and Platinum Ledger Award winning creator and publisher Alisha Jade
  • A guest table at Supanova located in The Alley, free of charge
  • Appearance promotion through Supanova's social media channels
  • A guest page on Supanova's website, and
  • Inclusion in the Event Programme.

The pressure of exhibiting at a large convention can be daunting and The Banksia Project aims to remove those pressures through its initiative. This is an incredible chance to gain experience and skills in a vibrant, supportive environment.

We’re stoked to have attended the launch for Maria Lewis' debut novel 'Who’s Afraid?' and opening of a special exhibition of artwork inspired by the book at Kinokuniya Sydney’s Wedge Gallery last week.

Our Supa-Staff had the pleasure of meeting Maria and experienced insights into her new book with the entertaining Marc Fennell (That Movie Guy) hosting a Q&A.

Featuring artworks from 25 artists including Supa-Star alumni Nicola Scott, 'The Art of Who’s Afraid?’ exhibition will run to January 27th.

Thanks to @HachetteAustralia for a wonderful evening and we look forward to hosting Maria on the Gold Coast and in Melbourne this April!

Infini - Movie Review

In 2007 a film was released into the Australian market that was a breath of fresh air for genre cinema. Part supernatural horror, part butt-kicking action; Gabriel was a cult sensation, both here and overseas, and its success catapulted director Shane Abbess onto the world stage. Many of the stars also went on to successful careers in film and TV including the star of Spartacus, the late Andy Whitfield. Now nearly 8 years later Shane returns with his next self funded feature film - the sci-fi thriller, Infini.

Infini is a fast paced action thriller which starts in hard science fiction territory and then skews into psychological thriller mode, with a healthy does of horror to boot. The premise is simple enough; a deep space mining colony has become infected with something terrible and the military teams sent to rescue them have fallen victim to the same rage-inducing epidemic. The last survivor on board is Whit Carmichael, played by The Bill’s Dan MacPherson. He’s a young father-to-be who finds himself on the station almost by accident as one final team is sent to rescue him and stop the pathogen reaching Earth.

This team consists of a collection of extreme bad-ass military specialists who have a limited time to effect a rescue. Charlie (Luke Hemsworth), Claire (Grace Huang), Morgan (Bren Foster), Chester (Luke Ford), Rex (Dwaine Stevenson), Philipa (Louisa Mignone) and Harris (Harry Pavlidis) are led by Seet (Kevin Copeland) on this potential suicide mission. What they can’t be prepared for is the horrors they find on the station and the personal toll it will take on them to survive.

Infini is a case study in tension building. It starts frantically then slows the pace briefly to help build up a horrifying, creeping dread. That dread keeps building until it hits a crescendo of violence and then all hell breaks loose. The film then becomes a high stakes game of cat and mouse punctuated by extreme violence and a growing feeling of insanity. The characters break down into dark shadows of themselves as paranoia takes hold. This all then builds back up to a final explosive climax to round out the film.

From the first shot to the last the film looks extremely impressive. It’s almost entirely done using practical effects on real sets and certainly, nothing inadvertently reveals the relatively small budget. The design work is top notch and the cinematography shows it off perfectly. The score is a driving force and serves as an excellent support to the action without being overblown. This is a film that looks and feels like a much bigger movie and it should be seen by anyone who has ever thought that Aussie independent film is anything less than spectacular.

Shane Abbess has created a pressure cooker environment for his film and the result is a powerfully tense sci-fi action horror with echoes of The Thing, Event Horizon and Aliens in equal measure. It descends fully into madness in the second act and some comparisons to Apocalypse Now would not be too far off the mark. It should be seen by any sci-fi fan who wants a story oozing with tension and kick-butt in the one feel swoop.

Infini is available now to rent or purchase on iTunes and other digital platforms!
