Rewrite: 1.28.2023 Comic Preview

Itโ€™s 1.28! 13 years ago (in the manga canon) was the day that Kiraโ€™s true identity was revealed.

Because of this, Iโ€™m releasing a few comic pages for the occasion! These are from my upcoming doujinshi titled Rewrite.

Also, today is the day I officially announce the release date of my doujinshi!

Regretfully, Iโ€™ve had to push Rewriteโ€™s deadline further into the future. I greatly underestimated the time required to complete the series. With some restructuring, Iโ€™ve planned out a realistic schedule, and Iโ€™m certain I can complete this series on time. This will give both me and the artists I work with the proper amount of time to create high-quality content!

I want to take a moment to thank the artists, writers, friends, acquaintances, fans and especially my SOโ€™s for their continued help on this project. I couldnโ€™t have come this far on my own; so, from the bottom of my heart: thank you! I appreciate each and every one of you!

Death Note: Rewrite, a free, digital Death Note Fanbook/Doujinshi. This five-arc series features comics, fanfiction and fanart!

Rewriteโ€™s Summary: Matt is tasked with repairing the bonds of his found family, at a time when grief and resentment rule both Melloโ€™s and Nearโ€™s hearts. The trio of successors battle more than Kira as they struggle to find their footing on lifeโ€™s path. In order to mend the wounds of the past, each must learn to forgive, and extend patience so they can renew their commitments to one another.

The story is a dramedy (drama and comedy) and will be rated M for mature themes.

Death Note: Rewrite will be posted to Archive of Our Own, Tumblr and Twitter on May 16th, 2025.

This work will be released 100% for free, and will feature weekly updates every Friday!ย

Okay first of all: I love your art too!! ๐Ÿค I get so happy when I see something from you on my dash!!

Second: I think Nearโ€™s reaction would be the same kind of seemingly cold as when 90% of the SPK dropped down dead right beside him.

But I have some thoughts about what Nearโ€™s life is like in his time at the SPK and I think the poor boy is as miserable as he ever was. No parents, no guidance, no friends. Just coworkers and the pressure of catching worldโ€™s most wanted criminal on his shoulders. I think he retreats into his room often and tries to deal with all the bottled up emotions alone (because he learned it would be unprofessional to let it out in front of his coworkers). Maybe Halle, Rester or Gevanni walks past the door one night just hearing sobs, moaning or just downright screaming. And the next day Near appears just as he did the day before.

Maybe this happened after Mello and Mattโ€™s passing too. Not immediately after but I headcanon Near having a massive depressive episode after Light died and the case was officially closed.

Unpopular opinion : Misa should have never existed since she hogged all the attention and spotlight away from Light and L's rivalry which made the series so great before she came along. Also her replacing Naomi was a terrible idea.

You know, if I was a Lawlight shipper, I'd bow down to Misa and kiss her feet for being the catalyst making the handcuffed-together plot bit happen. But you do you.

Why hate on Misa? It's not her fault she fell in love with a gay guy.

But let's also remember she had two shinigami simping hard for her, AND she managed to find Kira without him knowing.

I donโ€™t know what the Japanese said there, but since every translation of this line I know saysย โ€˜brought in a ย headโ€™ specifically I amโ€ฆ inclined to take that literally. (If anyone knows the Japanese, feel free to chime in and all.)And even if it were metaphorically, Melloโ€™s still the killer here.

I mean, I am personally very disinclined to give Mello the leeway of saying โ€˜it was indirectโ€™ about murders he directly ordered and causedโ€ฆ but this one is the one that is pretty certainly committed with his own hands, specifically.ย

It doesnโ€™t say that Mello explicitly took the guyโ€™s head himself, but the phrasing is that Mello gifted (as a present/souvenir - a physical thing) the head.ย 

So it seems that there was an actual head involved. I donโ€™t think itโ€™s figurative, sinceย ๅœŸ็”ฃ (present/souvenir) are actual physical things, as opposed to something intangible like an action done for someone else. For instance, just giving information on how to kill a mafia boss wouldnโ€™t be ๅœŸ็”ฃ. And the translation specifies the head, rather than just a death or dead body, soโ€ฆ yeah. I wasnโ€™t expecting that. Before looking it up, I just assumed the โ€œheadโ€ was figurative for the guyโ€™s death. Looks like itโ€™s literal. But this is a little off track. Mello gifted an actual head, although it doesnโ€™t specify that he killed the guy directly with his own hands.

Either way, the guyโ€™s dead and Mello is responsible, regardless if Mello got his hands dirty or not.ย 

This is the best Mello fact I have ever heard, I am screaming.ย  I thought I expected this, but reading it so very unambiguously is something entirely different. Mello bought his way into the mafia with an actual literal severed head. Now thatโ€™s something.

Bless this post. Adding my own unnecessary weigh-in about influences and gang culture:

  • Collecting heads is not really a mafia thing, more of a Mexican gang thing. ย Historically, it is was a degrading death penalty in Japan.ย 
  • Possible inspirations: Kill Bill came out before Death Note, andย this wasย fairly iconic at the time. Funnily enough, that scene may reference a story more relevant to Mello:ย the 47-ronin legend, where 47 rogue samurai avenge the death of their former lord by beheading Lord Kira.ย 
  • Mello probably kept a certain memento:

Oh I've been waiting to comment on this post!

My take: Mello gives a keepsake (something the Mafia boss owned) to Rod Ross as proof the boss was dead instead of giving anything anatomical. I decided on this for a few reasons, but mainly to see Mello fight physically, which is lacking in the manag and anime series proper.

What is the keepsake? I'll be saving that reveal for later. For now please enjoy these crops from my WIP doujinshi:

I decided to share another OC from my WIP Death Note doujinshi, called Death Note: Rewrite. It's a story I've worked on and off since 2010, and plan to release it in 2025. Today's topic is Matt's parents.

Meet Lucille Jeevas. As a single parent, Lucille put a lot of energy into creating the best work/life balance schedule she could. She worked early shifts as a secretary, and went home to cook so that Mail always had a hot meal waiting for him after school. Mail was Lucille's pride and joy, and she did everything in her power to provide a good life for both of them.

Growing up, Mail was a shy but intelligent boy, both academically and emotionally. His mother taught him to be compassionate; because of this, teachers and other parents always complimented Lucille on her parenting abilities.

The one thing Lucille detested most was her day job. Don't misunderstand; she loved providing for her and her son, but her dream was to be a stay-at-home mom. Lucille wanted to put as much time as she could into caring for Mail, without having to worry about her formal work. She expressed this desire to her boyfriend, Kevin, on one fateful occasion.

Just then, he came up with a great idea: why not move in together? Kevin made more than enough money for himself, and could easily provide for Lucille and her son. It didn't take long for her to accept the offer, and only a few weeks later, the two decided they would tie the knot. Although mother and son were humble, they found themselves impressed with everything Kevin could provide within their new, lavish home.

However, there would eventually be trouble in paradise. In a few short years, Mail finds himself in the company of Mihael and Nate at his newest place of residence: Wammy's House.
