imagine if bellamy linking jaha's institutional power to emperor augustus (-> bellamy as a leader) -> bellamy naming his sister octavia after augustus's sister -> octavia's own leadership plot had been fully intentional foreshadowing... this is what I mean when I saw the show could've been GOOD good if it had known from the start its main interest was in the blake siblings (there's a reason why this episode, "his sister's keeper", is probably the one that has stayed with me the most out of season 1). alas, the way they did it worked for my actual faves so 🤐

like just... as it is, aurora's influence is subtle in the show at large while being so heavy and oppressive for the blakes. and if that had been expanded further, if that and their bond and their hunger for power after being at the bottom (octavia not even being allowed to exist, bellamy treading a tightrope his entire life, aurora exchanging sexual favours to keep them all save and try to move ahead)... if all of that had been THEE point of the story instead of added for flavour, the show could've been such a tight narrative.

the blakes, man. the blakes.

bellamy taking her to the masquerade and watching her dance carefree should've/would've been made to feel much weirder in this scenario... like they have no reference on what it means to have a sibling. the possessive vibes would've been even more off-the-chart and vaguely if not explicitly incestuous añlsdkjfasf.

not usually my thing but it would've done A LOT to make the ark feel REALLY REALLY difference from our own society, as opposed to being the one we were meant to relate because it was "civilised" vis a vis the grounders. in fact, they should've fully utilised the culture clash by having grounders with a framework of what a sibling relationship should be like being troubled and freaked out and even grossed out by the blakes.

because in this episode in particular they clearly thought they were soooo smart by playing into racist stereotypes with lincoln that they would ~subvert later, but that "later" was, at best, dubious. portraying the ark as a society that would create something that repelled us* as much as some of the grounders' most brutal tactics could've gone a long way, iykwim. ESPECIALLY if they'd gone for the linctavia vs. blakecest angle, giving the first relationship a very different perspective.

*I mean. the death penalty angel does work for me, but err. the show was usamerican and definitely not portraying the death penalty as a definite evil in any shape of form.

bob used to bring some effort to the job because I swear I always saw just a bit of RELIEF when octavia was caught... relief because at least it was over, the chips had fallen, he wouldn't need to be constantly on edge anymore... the blakes.......
