Part 5: Memento

note:  This fic was written for @lawlu-week!!

rating: T

tags: canon universe, fluff and angst, hanahaki possible trigger warning: mentions of death, dead bodies

_______

“You ever hunt beetles?” Luffy asks, his feet shwish-shwishing back and forth over Law’s thick, weighted blanket.

Law doesn’t begrudge Luffy for having followed him back to the Polar Tang, to his room, to make his bed his own for the night. Conveniently enough, it will make it easier for Law to scan his body for spores once he falls asleep. Law just wishes that he would sleep so he could get to it.

“No,” Law says simply, sitting on the corner of his bed. He runs his fingers through Luffy’s knotted hair, muses around the thought of disguising his scan as routine medical procedure, though now is neither the time nor place. He can’t give Luffy any undue anxiety, knowing how grim his situation may read.

Part 5: War

rating: T

Engaging the Straw Hat Pirates in all-out war was a mistake, Law has to confess. He really hadn’t intended for it to be anything more than a friendly competition between their crews. It was meant as an attempt to assuage Luffy’s anxieties, assuming that’s what’s been causing his pain. He hadn’t been at all prepared for the hell Luffy’s entire crew would bring down upon his own.

Here he is now, trapped on the Thousand Sunny, soaked in sea water and too weakened to initiate his room. Law skirts the battle, feeling with his haki to sense anyone that might notice him. He ducks into their storage room with silent stealth despite his nerves. His shaking hands fumble for the door, pull it closed, muffling the screams of his comrades outside.

Chattering voices pull Luffy from his dreams. He doesn’t want to wake up, not yet. It feels like he’d fallen asleep stargazing with Law just seconds ago.

Even though sleeping outside on the ground has never been uncomfortable for him and his body does feel like it’s not ready to get up, he mostly wants to savor a few more minutes of being cuddled up with Law. Law’s body is warm, the sound of his breath soothing. He even smells nice with the smoke from last night’s grilled meat still clinging to his clothes.

I was wondering if you were going to continue that hanahaki au? It's so good!

Yeah!! I’ve got all the chapters planned out, but I’m just not fast enough to put out a chapter a day.

Thanks so much for you’re interest in it though!! It means a lot~

“What’s wrong with this one?” Luffy asks, taking up the cut of meat Law passed him. He pops it into his mouth before Law can even answer.

“A little too well done,” Law excuses with a harmless lie. It wouldn’t kill Law to admit that he gets special pleasure in spoiling his ally, but that would ruin his game. It’s just a shame that he’s the only one who knows they’re playing. Law enjoys his private game of seeing how much affection he can show without revealing his feelings nonetheless.

Rosales, Law had told him, is a perpetual spring island with perfect weather year round and flowers constantly in bloom. Although, much like Law himself, seeing the island in person is infinitely better than thoughts or hearsay can really convey.

From the Sunny, Luffy can already spy a bunch of flowering trees along the shoreline, smattering the area with a virtual rainbow of colours—colours Luffy didn't even know trees could come in. A sweet scent dances on the breeze, something flowery and light. Pale pink petals of the fragile cherry blossoms rain down on them as they near the docks, sprinkling the ship. If the scenery is alone this beautiful, Luffy can’t wait to see what kind of elaborate restaurant Law is going to take him to—hopefully something with a hundred different kinds of meat.

note: This fic is a collaboration for @lawlu-week with @yumenofude who created this amazing artwork which perfectly portrays the story, and who also helped me with thinking of the initial storyline.

summary: Law—being with him is the best feeling imaginable. It‘s the perfect kind of happiness mixed with a little excitement. Just having adventures with Law makes those adventures all the more exciting.

“I’m all in!” Luffy declares, pushing his poker chips into the middle of the table. His eyes dart nervously over the other two members of his crew still in the game, lips pursed, eyebrows raised.

He’s never been a good liar but he’s trying so hard to win. If all goes well he’ll be able to make enough money to pay his debt to Nami, in return for which she’s agreed to coordinate a meeting with Law’s navigator to bring him there sooner than planned.

Luffy’s heart does a happy little flip inside his ribs at the thought. His stomach feels all… bubbly, like it’s full of really fizzy, shaken up cola. It’s a weird feeling, but he kind of likes it.

He shuffles his cards around in his hands. He doesn’t really know if they’re good or not, but they’ve got  hearts on them, so he’s got a good feeling about it. Law has hearts on him and he gets good feelings just thinking about Law.

The Tides That Bind Us

note:10 Days of LawLu- Day 6 String /Chains

This work is a collaboration with @tentaclemage who drew this absolutely beautiful artwork. She also titled the fic. tysm Lyssa~

rating: T (maybe M)

tags: real world AU, shipwreck hunting, mermen

summary: Fate calls to Luffy in the form of a red string that appears around his finger in his dreams. It pulls him toward the sea where his destiny lies within a legendary shipwreck.

*・゜ㅆㅅ・:*・ ㅅㅆ ・*・ㅅㅆ ゜・*

Chapter 1: The String

“Find anything?” Nami calls across the calm, shimmering water.

“Nothing again!” Luffy calls back, lifting his diving mask, flippered feet propelling him forward, swimming behind Zoro on their way back to the boat.

“Shit. You sure it’s out here?” Sanji asks, leaning on the railing of their boat next to Nami.

“Just trust him. We’ll find it,” Zoro grumbles as he loops an arm around the boat’s metal ladder to anchor himself enough to pull off his flippers and toss them into the boat. “Luffy’s got a sixth-sense about this kinda stuff.”

In the two years Luffy’s crew has been together, Luffy has lead them to find no less than five shipwrecks which is nothing short of miraculous in this vocation.

To Luffy it’s thrilling to uncover lost ships and the secrets they hold. It’s fun to try out Franky’s new machines for recovering lost items from the ocean floor. It’s interesting to hear Robin tell stories about the history of the objects they recover. It’s even pretty nice getting some fame from doing it, but it all just seems like practice for the greatest find of his life.

It comes to Luffy in recurring dreams- sometimes as clouded visions, sometimes clear as the tropical waters it supposedly rests in. The minute details are ever-changing as the tides, but one thing is always constant- a red string coiled around his finger. It leads him down into the depths of the ocean, pulls him toward the thrill of discovering the holy grail of sunken ships. There it lies on the ocean floor, it’s split hull revealing a wealth of relics from the past, pirate treasures once coveted, now forgotten. The red string winds its way around them enticing Luffy in as if telling him that all this is meant to be his. What was once the pirate king’s is now waiting for him, so what is he waiting for?

Law jump-starts awake, almost falling out of his chair, a page of his book nearly rips from its binding as it’s torn away from his face. His heart pounds to the beat of the fist thumping against his dorm room door. For a second he’s not even sure where he is, where the sound is coming from, which way is up. A stack of flashcards he’s made shift from under his elbow, scattering across the floor like academic confetti. It takes him a moment to realize he’s fallen asleep at his desk again.

He stumbles from his chair, grumbling death-threats at whoever is at the door, but it doesn’t deter the menace who it would seem has never heard of gently rapping a door with their knuckles like anyone with a sense of decency.

The pounding stops long enough for a young man’s voice to shout from the other side, “Ace!! E a hora do café da mañha!!”

Portuguese—so probably Ace’s family, Law guesses. He should have known his roommate would be behind something like this. If anything the least bit out of the ordinary has to happen, there’s no doubt his roommate Ace is behind it.

nostalgia curling.

There is a postcard Luffy never sent, stuck to their fridge door with a cactus-shaped magnet. One of those real touristy ones (you know it), where the sunlight hits Sabaody city just right to make it incredible, like homeless don’t stretch along its streets, just looking for something to eat (“The city of dreams!” Yeah, right). It hasn’t moved for years. It hasn’t moved for so long, that Law is sure it would stay regardless of the cactus magnet. In fact, he is positive that underneath that postcard, the fridge is a different colour. Maybe white instead of the weird cream tinge it dons now, indicative of their life in this house, years spent without any change.

Today, he gets rid of it. You would too. The cactus magnet is cute, dammit, and at the moment it’s barely visible, hidden in dark mess of colours on a peeling piece of cardboard, one whose edges are curling like burnt paper. He takes it off, almost afraid the tattered thing with fall to pieces at his touch. Turns it over for a quick glance—blank, as suspected—opens the bin and then—

Stops.

He rubs his thumb along the paper. Once. Twice. Five times. Frowns. Caesar, their cat, jumps up on the bench at his side, nudging his hand with the crown of his head, demanding food with an indignant yowl. Law bats his nose with the postcard and then immediately regrets it, guilt clawing at his stomach as he holds it up to the fluorescent kitchen light, checking for any damage.

And just as he suspected, there is a name etched into the old, worn cardboard, faded from years of neglect. He thinks about the way the sun hits their fridge in the mornings, too bright and fierce; the shitty LED light that bathes him now, burning his retinas; the steam that comes from their stove, filling up the tiny un-ventilated kitchen.

The messily scrawled Ace is barely visible but still there. Written in cheap biro, it’s lasted the ages of their abuse. A wonder.

Down the hall, Law hears the front door slamming—then the tell-tale stamp, stamp, stamp of impatient feet. He whirls on his heel, ignoring another annoyed meow from that idiot cat, and clips the cactus back into place, where it holds the postcard, the memories, the space together, unchanged, familiar.

Luffy’s head pokes around the corner, grinning manically. “Torao! You need to feed Caesar! Let’s go!”

Law says nothing—just reaches out, grabbing Luffy’s arm and pulling him forward into his chest with a small oof. He holds him there, close, arms wrapped tightly around Luffy’s wiry body; breathes him in, the smell of salt and shampoo, something stabbing his chest, something so known, something that just—that just

“Torao,” comes the impatient voice, muffled by Law’s clothes. “Sanji’s cooking a banquet at his house! Let’s go!”

Law smirks, eyes flicking to the fridge—the cactus lost in the gaudy photo, the peeling edges, the curling memories. Filling the space—creating the space. Like a beautiful secret. And he says, “Alright,” taking Luffy’s hand, kissing his fingers, letting him know he is there.

It is the simplicity of their life unchanged. And Law would not have it any other way.

Law made a terrible mistake. He slept with Luffy, of all people. Sure, he drank a lot but he should’ve still been in his right mind.

He ran his hand over his hair, then lowered his head, eyeing Luffy. Both were shirtless and covered with a blanket. At least Law was still wearing his spotted pants.

He straightened his back and leaned against the wall. He could use Room to escape—

“It’s morning already?” Luffy mumbled, rubbing his eye. He blinked the blurriness away, then stared at Law. Both locked gaze, quiet for a second before he exclaimed. “Hi, Torao!”

How could Luffy be calm at a time like this?

“Did we…” God, this was so awkward. But might as well get over it. “Did we sleep together?”

“Yeah,” Luffy answered quick.

Law was both amazed and annoyed that Luffy said it like nothing. Not even Law could do that. He would’ve left a long ago.

“Do you do this often?” he inquired. And okay, it wasn’t any of his damn business, but what the fuck? He assumed Luffy would be a bit more caring, not a yeah-and-what-of-it type of guy.

“Yeah, sometimes. I sleep with Zoro, Usopp, and even Sanji if he’s in a good mood…”

Law tuned him out. Instead he gazed at the ceiling. Why did he feel like he had a one night stand with someone who loved sleeping around?

“Law, you okay?” Luffy asked.

“I’m not okay!” he snapped. “I slept with you! And I just found out you sleep with half your crew! How the fuck am supposed to be okay after that?”

Luffy narrowed his eyes, then wondered, “You don’t sleep with yours?”

“No!”

“But I’ve seen you sleep with Bepo.”

Oh. Oh. Law now understood. It’s a misunderstanding.

But just in case.

“Can you tell me what happened last night, Strawhat?”

Luffy nodded, smiling. “You got drunk and threw up on me and then on yourself. I had to take off both our shirts. You passed out here. Chopper was scared you were going to choke on your own vomit, so I stayed with you to make sure you didn’t die,” he explained.

Yeah. Everything made sense.

Law’s lips turned upwards, his hand covered his face. He was so relieved. Nothing happened between them, but that wasn’t what mattered to Law. It was that nothing especially happened with Luffy and the other crew members.

“Is that all?”

Luffy paused. “Oh, I forgot to tell you. You kissed me, too!”

Fuck, Law mentally cussed.

Heart Beats Slow

(asexual relationship, slow burn, asexual!luffy, angst, emotional hurt/comfort, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and friendship. spoiler free)

Leagues ebb and flow between their ships.

“Where are you, Traffy?”

Night, six days from Wano. Here, there are no stars, the sky black as pitch.

Law starts.

It’s such a simple question. He can see the den-den grinning in the darkness, mirroring Luffy’s smile, hat resting on its back. A distant patter of rain echoes through the receiver. Luffy’s talking about something, saying something about Sanji, something about the rain, Big Mom’s island of candy. He’s laughing.

Without thinking, Law reaches across the expanse of his desk, brushing his fingers over the corner of the snail’s smile. He can feel Luffy’s soul through it, taste the laughter; feels it in the way his heart thuds, out-of-time, too fast, uncontrolled.

Leagues ebb and flow between their ships, and the utter darkness here is all-consuming, the loneliness washing over him in waves. The snail is soft under his fingertips, never close enough. Never enough.

He always wants too much.

“Things are okay, aren’t they, Torao?”

And he answers, “Yeah.” Tries to breathe. “Things are okay.”

It was frustrating to say the least. Every time Luffy saw the tattooed guy, he’d vanish like some kind of ghost. If he was an actual ghost that would just make him even more enchanting, although Luffy wasn’t sure what kind of ghost sat in on university classes.

It wasn’t until Luffy was walking back to his dorm that he happened to see the silver-eyed guy again through the window of the library. He dove through the library’s double doors and raced down the hall, his sneakers leaving black scuff marks on the elegant marble floors. He just had to get to this guy before he disappeared again.

“I found you!” he cried, slapping his hands down on the table across from where his new classmate was sitting.

The man looked up at him over the rims of rectangular framed reading glasses.

“Was I meant to be found?” he spoke in near-monotone.

“I’m Luffy. We had a class together in the morning. I was the one who came in late and I saw you looking at me in class and I found you on campus today but you kept disappearing when I tried to-”

“So, what? You want to borrow my notes from the start of class or something?”

Luffy had been so busy chasing this guy, he hadn’t really planned out what he wanted with him. All he knew is he wanted to know more about him. He seemed fun probably.

i have to know - sour milk??

Avatar

Ah, yeah... that one started out as a pancakes metaphor which drunk me thought was brilliant at the time (that there can be an unexpectedly good outcome from potentially dangerous ingredients) but somehow it ended up just being a misleading title.

... ... ... ... ... ... ...

sour milk:

The tattooed stranger wraps his arm around Luffy’s waist, slips a leg casually between his, nearly pulls him into his lap. The warmth of his body bleeds into Luffy’s. His words reverberate in his ear, breath warm on his neck. “I’m tired of this place. Want to get out of here?”

The man has a demon’s charm. There’s temptation in his presence- dark premonition in his smooth, silky voice.

Tonight, with intoxication swimming in his veins, drunk even more on infatuation, Luffy wants to be wherever he is. He needs to have an adventure with this person.

“Yeah, Let’s go,”‬ he says.

The other man flashes him a smirk, takes his hand to guide him toward the door. He stops to say something to a guy with an ocra hat on the way and Luffy doesn’t hear it, but Orca-guy is grinning like a thief when he shouts to him to have fun.

Luffy follows down the narrow hall, graffitied rainbow mural on the wall, out the club’s single door. The chill of night, silent energy of the city streets just after 2am hit Luffy like a breath of fresh air. This is one of those coveted nights, invigorating in its possibilities.

The man drops his hand as soon as they get outside.

‪“Sorry, I’m not actually into hooking up with strangers. I just needed an excuse to leave,” he tells Luffy
