Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu

4/5 ⭑

Written in 1872 this gothic, sapphic novella predates Dracula and is considered to be the original vampire story.

This novella has everything you want in a vampire story: poetic descriptions of the gothic and haunting atmosphere, old castles, supernatural creatures, sexual desire, the tombs of the undead and a fear of religion.

Two things in this novella stood out to me and I was pleasantly surprised by them, especially considering when it was written.

Firstly, the male characters in this story take up very little space, they’re not the stereotypical authoritative, confident or arrogant men you may expect from a book written in this time, they are actually quite useless to be honest (refreshing!).

Secondly, the lesbian aspect in this story may not be actually said out loud but it’s definitely there. Carmilla exclusively preys on young women and the protagonist feels both fear and fascination for her. This of course because of Carmilla’s nature as a vampire, but it also reads as the conflicting feelings of a young girls first experience with romance, and especially in this case a same sex romance.

I highly recommend this read, it’s quite short and can definitely be read in one sitting.

Summary:

“In an isolated castle deep in the Austrian forest, Laura leads a solitary life with only her ailing father for company.

Until one moonlit night, a horse-drawn carriage crashes into view, carrying an unexpected guest - the beautiful Carmilla. So begins a feverish friendship between Laura and her mysterious, entrancing companion.

But as Carmilla becomes increasingly strange and volatile, prone to eerie nocturnal wanderings, Laura finds herself tormented by nightmares and growing weaker by the day...”

I love that the pandemic actually definitively proved a lot of those "hard" questions for us. Masking up reduced cases of the flu to almost nonexistent numbers and we had zero flu deaths for a time. The welfare and social service and unemployment programs helped keep people living paycheck to paycheck out of poverty, and those stimulus checks some folks keep complaining about actually massively benefitted the common man and the economy. Individual personal travel was so extremely restricted on a global scale that we basically have concrete proof that individual restraint in terms of driving cars or travelling means absolutely nothing by comparison because the mass pollution is coming from the fisheries and the corporations with private jets and container ships. Working from home actually has massive benefits for a company like productivity boosts and better mental health of employees while also saving gas

and we're just. Willingly going back to how everything was before. We were shown how to do things better and the people in charge said "that's nice but we just want to get everything 'back to normal' :)"

we’re not willingly going back to how everything was before. we are being forced back into it by members of the ruling class who found out that making things better for almost everyone else made them feel bad.

Fatphobia isnt just being bullied for being fat.

It’s being forced to shop online and spend more money because the store doesnt carry your size

Its “we only sell this tshirt in unisex in your size” [many places only offer “womens” tees large and below]

Its having to buy two plane tickets for one person

Its having medical conditions overlooked because of your weight

It’s having fat people in media only be comic relief or the villain [or not featured at all]

Its people saying to your partner “you’re with *them*?”

It’s being found disgusting for sweating - even when you’re exercising

It’s being considered a fetish

It’s so much more than being bullied by words, but for some reason, people seem to think if they dont hear someone actively saying “fuck fat people they suck. I personally think fat people should die,” then nothing can be fatphobic.

no offense to anyone personally but I think we are way too used to and comfortable with weekly releases and if that wasn’t already bad enough, it seems like most of you aren’t even patient enough to wait for the official release date my point is this industry moves way too quickly

The way that people treat with the medium of manga is interesting and sad because a lot of mangaka are disabled and becoming disabled because of the intense workload. The grace extended to legendary author-artists like Togashi should be how all these artists are treated, and more. Your favorite artists are destroying themselves to create the pages you consume and make judgments on and they deserve to take the time their bodies need to recover from these efforts. The weekly release schedule is literally hurting artists.
