My ID is Gangnam Beauty

Image

On the outside: A kdrama about a girl who gets plastic surgery but realizes beauty is on the inside.

On the inside: A kdrama that addresses the toxic societal expectations of high feminine and high masculinity traits which drive men to only view women as sexual objects, become violent towards them when rejected, and who get to dictate and control a woman’s expression of self. While women must conform to insane levels of beauty, compete with other women for the desire of men while maintaining “sweet” personalities, and place their entire value on their outer appearance despite being highly intelligent.

(and its only on episode 4)

AND THIS WAS SATISFYING

Burn the stage, the K pop industry and being a celebrity

I saw different posts and opinions on the upcoming show starring BTS. I think it’s an important topic for various reasons and decided to talk about it.

I’ll start by reminding everyone that BTS are not your average stars.

Western celebrities and Kpop idols are extremely different to begin with. The Western ones are often sat on a pedestal and generally don’t seem very attainable. Yes, they always say how thankful they are for their fans, how much they love them, how much they own their success to the them but it’s mostly just that - words. There’s a bigger disconnect between a celebrity and their fans outside of K pop. Often the fans are something abstract to these celebrities. They know the audience is “out there” but it’s faceless and not something that is daily on their mind.

Kpop is a whole other thing. This is a very competitive industry, a dog vs dog world, where the continued support of the fans is crucial to the survival of every idol. There’s not really a “discovery” of an artist or a “breakthrough” after which the success is set in stone. Until there’s a big fan base and even after that an idol must nurture this bond to keep themselves in the industry. Outside K pop there’s not so much concern about staying present in the fans’ minds and when there is, there are different, more distant ways used to deal with it such as talk show appearances or social media posts at best. Terms as “comebacks”, “fan signs”, “high touch events”, “vlives”, “weakly shows”, “fan cafe posts” simply don’t exist in a typical celebrity’s dictionary.

Part of k pop’s appeal and success is hidden in this: the availability, attainability and approachability of the idols. They are trained how to best maintain a certain level of closeness with the fans while simultaneously preserving themselves. In a big way K pop is a fantasy world where the fan finds in the idol a friend, someone who cares and someone to care for; K pop is a place of positive emotions, a great one for an escape. There you feel accepted, happy, a part of a community. Themes like suicide, mental illness, abuse, homophobia, social inequality, poverty, insecurities, self-harm, school or work struggles are not common for most k pop songs (not that they are that much present in Western media as well). And thanks to various content concerning your idol (even between comebacks) you are always engaged and the idol never seems far away. It’s an easy world to get sucked in.

And in this world BTS are still different.
