A Still Day or A Hurricane

“Bubba, it’s time to leave for school.”

Your voice echoes from the kitchen as you approach Heejin’s bedroom after you have packed her snacks. It’s the third day of kindergarten and you know she’s excited to go back. You spent the entirety of last night listening to her animatedly talk about her friends and the big sand box and that her teacher has sunflowers on her desk everyday. Heejin had proudly declared that her Dada calls her that, and you recall the blush on Jungkook’s face at the story. 

“Just one more, Mama!” Her tiny voice calls back. 

You’re about to ask one more what but you reach the door in time to see what she means. There, seated on the floor in front of Heejin’s little dresser, is your husband and the pigtails on his head. You watch her amusingly as she tugs on Jungkook’s hair and tries, with her small hands, to tie the scrunchie on his bangs. 

He’s grown his hair out a bit and your daughter has been enjoying giving him the same hairstyle that he does for her. On her first day, she wanted simple - just matching headbands. Yesterday, they both had flower clips. Today, you see that she’s gotten a bit bolder with the hot pink hair ties and the man at the center of it doesn’t seem to mind one bit. 

“Ta-da! Dada and I look alike now, Mama!” Heejin declares, laughing when Jungkook peppers her face with kisses as he thanks her for his look. 

“Yes you do, bubba,” you smile, holding your laughter in because Jungkook, as handsome as he is, looks adorable. “He’s pretty just like you. Now why don’t you put on your coat so he can take you to school?”

“Okay!” She squeals, scurrying to the living room. 

Jungkook stands up and huffs. “Thank god I have a baby face. I could at least say I don’t look too silly.”

“You look fine, babe. And Heejin is just excited that you get to bring her to school everyday. If I don’t know any better, she’s probably showing off to everyone there that her Dada is so cool and amazing,” you wink, kissing his cheek before walking outside. 

“Well, I kinda am,” he winks back, pecking your lips at the roll of your eyes. “Okay, Jinnie. Say goodbye to Mama now.”

Heejin runs over to you with her arms up and gives you a kiss. “Bye, Mama!” She kisses your belly and waves. “Goodbye, watermelons! Don’t give Mama a hard time!”
