PSA for my fellow white people

Latino/Latina: originating from the Carribean, South or Central America. Gender neutral term (in English) is usually written as latinx.

  • Sentence: María was born in Ecuador, so she is Latina.

Hispanic: Spanish-speaking.

  • Sentence: José was born in Brazil, so he is NOT Hispanic, since his country’s official language is Portugese, but he IS considered Latino.

Mexican: from the Central American country named Mexico, NOT a language. NOTICE! not all Latinos in the US are from Mexico

  • Sentence: Enrique was born in Mexico, so he is Mexican. Enrique speaks Spanish, since “Mexican” is not a language.

Chicano/Chicana/Chicanx: a person of Mexican descent (usually born in the US)

  • Sentence: Anna’s parents were born in Mexico, so she identifies as Chicana. Her friend Miguel’s parents are from Colombia, so he identifies as Latino.

Spanish: a language spoken by many countries all over the world/ originating from the country Spain. NOTICE! not the only language spoken in Spain or South/Central America.

  • Sentence: Juan was born in Madrid, so he is Spanish. He only speaks Spanish, but has friends who speak other languages.

Quechua, Catalan, Nahuatl, Gallego, Euskera: other languages spoken in countries where Spanish is the ‘official’ language. Many Hispanics are bilingual and Spanish may not be their native language.

  • Sentence: Alba was born in a region of Spain called Catalonia. Even though she is Spanish, she speaks Catalan with her family and friends.
  • Sentence #2: Sofia was born in Mexico and does not speak “Mexican,” but her family does speak Nahuatl, a native language originating in Mexico.

That is all.

Mandatory reading for my followers.

Mother Teresa is going to be declared a saint... and she shouldn’t be

I’m not shocked but honestly I’m so disappointed. I’m a girl who grew up in Kolkata, someone who grew up hearing about Mother Teresa and to be honest I hate the fact that the liberal, white, Western media has held this woman as some sort of paragon of virtue. And she really wasn’t. Here are some things she did:

  1. She was so anti-abortion that she actually used her Nobel Peace Prize speech to rail against population control, family planning and abortion.
  2. She supported Indira Gandhi’s declaration on the state of emergency in 1975, saying “People are happier. There are more jobs. There are no strikes.”
  3. She idolised poverty and suffering, stating that she thought it was beautiful that the poor had accepted their lot in life. But when it came to her, she would check herself into expensive clinics, in the West, in order to treat her own illnesses.
  4. She was also associated with and supported corrupt businessmen such as Charles Keating and Robert Maxwell, as well as the dictatorial Duvalier family and Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha.
  5. She encouraged members of her order to secretly baptise dying patients with no regard for their own faiths.
  6. Her public image was super misleading because  only a few hundred people are served by even the largest of the homes. In 1998, among the 200 charitable assistance organisations reported to operate in Calcutta, hers wasn’t even ranked among the largest organisations- there were others doing a much better job.
  7. In 1991, a journalist visited the home and described the medical care the patients received as “haphazard” and he observed that sisters, who had no medical knowledge, had to make decisions about patient care, because of the lack of doctors there.
  8. Her order did not distinguish between curable or incurable patients, so that people who could otherwise survive would be at risk of dying from infections and lack of treatment. She herself described her houses as the Houses of the Dying.
  9. She reinforced the popular colonialist image of the white woman giving up her life to save the souls of the “wretched” brown people.

There are more shady things about her but I’m over this beatification of Mother Teresa. I’m over her, and I’m over this constant fawning. Kolkata isn’t the “city where Mother Teresa lived”. It has it’s own identity and Mother Teresa doesn’t, at least in my opinion, deserve this honour that the Catholic Church is bestowing on her.

wow someone finally brought up how much she loved hoxha.

i laugh whenever people make mr. darcy out to be the ultimate heartthrob, because let me remind you this man’s talents amount to gushing about his little sister when literally no one asked, not socializing at parties, insulting the people he likes as well as their loved ones, probably saying “thank you” to the bus driver (that one’s good, at least), randomly jumping into lakes whenever he’s in a particularly angsty mood, sulking in the background while his one friend socializes with someone else, ruining his and everyone else’s personal relationships, and making what should go down in history as the Worst Marriage Proposal Ever™

Best lines in Stardust Crusaders, a partial list

  • “Do not worry, my lily white friends”
  • “I am the nicest man in the world. I have girlfriends everywhere.”
  • “Bathroom disasters are Polnareff’s thing. This is not in line with my image.”
  • “I won. Part 3 is over.” “And who is going to replace me as the protagonist? You?”
  • “We are friends. Friends of justice.”
  • (Polnareff, after Kakyoin elbows him in the face) “Thank you, Kakyoin.”
  • “My fourth wish is to not listen to your wishes.”
  • “Are you really trying to shoot me? I like you.”
  • “I’m pretty confident. I play video games sometimes.” (Kakyoin, about to fight a nigh-invincible vampire)

Sorry for all this, but since I’ve been blocked I can’t actually directly respond.

It’s great that you think that A became Asexual from Ally when AVEN forced the issue, but… AVEN formed in iike, what, 2000?

I can personally remember A being Asexual in the 90s, before that event.

My partner remembers it from the 80s, and points out that sometimes there were two As (Asexual and Ally) and sometimes two Qs (Queer and Questioning).

I know Marsha P. Johnson and Silvia Rivera were influential in the late 60s and early 70s, but they did not start the community.  They were organizers IN the community that already existed.  And they were in NYC.  The communities in the midwest and California were not entirely identical back in the before times.  Hell, the lesbians and the gays couldn’t always be in the same room with one another and stay polite.

The internet has homogenized this stuff some, but back in the 80s and 90s things weren’t quite as consistent as they have become.

The ‘X’ that Kinsey discussed were absolutely part of the existing queer community, even if they weren’t calling themselves ‘ace’.  Same people.

I can’t remember citations, but I’m pretty sure if you go dig up some of good old Magnus Hirschfeld work that you’ll find that pre-WWII queer community in Berlin (ie, the San Francisco of Europe at the time) included discussions of people we would recognize as Asexual.

History is long and complicated.  It’s a great story that Aces and Aros are cishet and straight and not part of the community, but it’s a story. It’s revisionist history.  It disagrees with my lived experience (I’m old).

The thing that really cheeses me off about this whole conversation is that back in the 80s and 90s you had this exact conversation, except it was about the ‘B’ or the ‘T’.  Not the ‘A’.  Now, the people making these kinds of exclusionary statements are excluding the ‘A’ from the LGBT.  And they use the same kinds of arguments.  B people are either straight (and therefore not part of the community) or confused gay people (in which case they were fine).  T people aren’t ‘really’ women, so they don’t belong in lesbian spaces.  Really they’re just gay men who like dressing up or they’re straight men who don’t belong in the community because they’re some kind of fetishist.

It’s always about peeling off some of these queer identities and reducing them to the ‘actually gay’ part (who are okay, if strange, and part of the community) and the ‘actually straight’ part (who are our oppressors, and don’t belong and are evil and sneaky and trying to horn in on our community and make us unsafe and doing it for attention).

It’s a conversation that makes us poorer every time we have to go through it.

This is a Great Post™. Ace history is not to be ignored or swept under the rug in the name of “discourse”. Thank you for sharing this.

I love this post a lot.

Please listen to older queer people when they try and warn you that we’ve been down this road before.

Ace and aro people have always been part of the queer movement, don’t ignore their history.

at what point in history do you think americans stopped having british accents

Actually, Americans still have the original British accent. We kept it over time and Britain didn’t. What we currently coin as a British accent developed in England during the 19th century among the upper class as a symbol of status. Historians often claim that Shakespeare sounds better in an American accent.

Always add in the video that according to linguists, Native southern drawl is a slowed down British.

T’ be or not t’be, y’all.

Fun fact: Same thing happened with the French accent. French Canadians still have the original French accent from the 15th century.

Êt’e ou n’pô zêt’e, vous z’auts.

I’ve been trying to find this post for months. I’m freakishly obsessed with this and want the truth of what early colonists sounded like.

how is this funny to anyone.

Those people obviously don’t realize the extremely high kill rate for cats at shelters, not to mention that people literally dump indoor cats outside when they don’t want them anymore, and indoor cats often die due to starvation/predators (duh they have no survival skills).

Also - I might also be crying.

Jackson Galaxy is awesome. His story is is that he used to be a drug addict, and that while he was in the beginning of his recovery he saved a stray cat and nursed it back to life, and in return the cat essentially did the same for him, and ever since then, he’s taught himself everything there is to know about cats and their behavior. Cats saved his life, so he’s saving cats lives. He’s awesome.

I love this guy.

it ok to not be ready

Please spread this shit like wildfire. People go on and sit through the whole experience and they’re uncomfortable because they just want to please their partner and they don’t tell them that they want to stop because they are not ready. It’s okay not to be ready.

i thought somebody else might need to hear this, because i did.

This actually happened with me and my girlfriend when we were first dating.

Now we’re engaged! :D

Communication is important.

I agree!

really super fuckin important

it’s also important to not feel guilty after! you’re doing nothing wrong by stopping at any point, you’re not a bad partner for deciding you’re not ready even after you’ve started. communication is the most important thing so make sure to talk it out, you’ll both feel better for it
