Gaming & Collecting

@gunstar-hero

Hey, I am a collector. I mostly collect video games, but also love steelbooks, Blu rays, books, and other collectibles. I will try to keep this blog updated with news, art, finds, or reviews. Hopefully, other people as passionate about these things as I am can find something to enjoy here. Thanks for checking me out!

So I put some replacement shells on my joy cons. I really like how it turned out. So far I like having the d-pad again. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than the standard buttons. It wasn’t the easiest modification ever, but it’s doable. Let me know what you think!

They’re so cool I had to get them all.

Wow, that's impressive. I'm not sure I have the will power to do it again that many times. I do really want the orange ones though, so maybe once more.

Once again I bring you my multiple copies. This time a bit more recent, the ps3 and 360 era. Have any of you got doubles like me? Obviously there’s a whole bunch more titles out there since this past gen was quite competitive. I’m not actively seeking to get both, but if the price is right and I don’t have it, I’ll take it. Some if not most, are pretty much the same but a few of these games have differences that would warrant a rebuy. Some have different cover artwork or come in an exclusive steelbook. Others have console exclusive DLC or have extra characters. There’s plenty of reasons to double dip. And now that this gen’s games are quite affordable, you can happily own both! Let’s talk about it.

Man, the 7th Gen consoles had some great games. I still need to go back and play Brutal Legend and The Saboteur.

The chimera I designed for our new LEGO show. I cannot express how much of a labor of love this was. It took over 100 hours just to design, let alone build and is one of the largest and most complex sculptures I’ve done.

Fun fact: This model used every single LEGO color available in standard brick.

Manual Dexterity

Like the old Yellow Pages commercials and adverts used to say: “Let your fingers do the walking”, and that’s just what I did.

I found a seller who was selling several NES manuals from a list in the “Buy it Now” format.  You could buy as many or as few as you wanted and just list the ones you wanted after you placed your bid.  Since the manuals were such a good price I was able to put together 14 of my choosing.  This is such a cool way to pick off several manuals at once.  I had thought about trying to find a lot of manuals to buy but anytime I found an auction that met my criteria there would be one or more manuals that I already had. Upon reflection, I realized it was silly to buy the doubles just to get the others.  This style of auction was a perfect fit.

Highlights from this lot would be the manuals for the two Wisdom Tree games: The King of Kings and Exodus as well as the three black box manuals:  Kung Fu, Baseball, and Pro Wrestling.

Licensed games:  596/677

Unlicensed games: 59/90

Manuals:  195

Boxes: 88

CiB games:  54

Total games:  655

Wow! Great game room. I especially like all of the boxed games. Even if you do hide all of the Sega down in the corner😑

Where do you get the funds to purchase these amazing things

Thanks. I've worked hard to have a good job that pays well. It also doesn't hurt being single with no kids. A lot of it has just been accrued over time though. Being at the right place at the right time can make all the difference when trying to get things for cheap.

apparently there’s a category for super mario odyssey speedruns that just revolves around getting 1000 coins and purchasing the boxer shorts and that’s it

and it’s called nipple%

So, my friends and I decided a few years back to keep track of the games we beat throughout the year and then compare with each other. I had always been pretty bad about playing games but never finishing them but since we’ve started doing this, it’s pushed me to complete almost every game I play.

Let me know what the best games you’ve beaten this past year were.

Four rare photographs from the War Room, where id Software huddled together in early 1996 to try and finish Quake.

In clockwise order: John Carmack, John Romero, Michael Abrash and Adrian Carmack, and American McGee. From Masters of Doom:

As 1996 rolled around, not only was id at war with GTI but it was at war with itself. The decision to abandon Romero’s design for Carmack’s technology created incinerating pressure. The company was in perpetual crunch mode, trying to get the Doom-style shooter done by March. Carmack, feeling like he was the only one running the ship, decided it was time to turn up the heat. For weeks he had been working out in the hallway to keep an eye on everyone else. but now he suggested they tear the walls down.
They had no idea how messy the war room would be. Within days, walls began crashing around them, blanketing the area in powder dust. They lined tables up against the windows and piled on their computers, sitting by each other with barely enough room to grab a soda without knocking elbows.
Without the privacy of personal space, the tension began to mount. They worked eighteen-hour days, seven days a week.

These photos were borrowed from Rocket Jump: Quake and the Golden Age of First Person Shooters, a fantastic 125,000 word article by David Braddock published on Shacknews. Go read it now, it’s well worth whatever they ask for it.

So I ordered box protectors for a bunch of my boxed games. Here's a before and after of my Genesis games. I really like how much sharper it makes the games look. It also makes some of my beat up boxes look better. I think I'm going to try a different manufacturer next time though. These cases are a little too tight and don't fit some of the bigger genesis boxes. Plus they are pretty time consuming to construct.
