Yami Yugi officially reveals himself to his friends
I wanted to take a good look as to Atem’s big reveal in the manga.
So Yugi and his friends just get through Death-T 3, however, Honda gets caught in the blocks and is trapped. The others are worried what might happen to him. Now let’s take a look at Yugi. Kaiba has kidnapped his grandpa, put him in the hospital, forced the gang into deadly games, and now, he’s possibly lost Honda forever. YUGI IS FURIOUS!
Okay, Yugi. You’re officially scaring me there… (Imagine Dan Green saying this!)
Now this is where Atem normally takes over. Whenever Yugi is hurt, scared, or mad is the trigger. However, this time the change doesn’t happen right away.
Anzu and Jonouchi notice something strange is happening to him. They haven’t met Atem yet or are even aware of his existence. They came close to seeing him in the match against Shadi, but he quickly shifted back to Yugi, so they thought they imagined the change in their friend’s expression.
Right now, I’m sure Atem wants to come out and take down Kaiba, but he’s trapped in a room with Jonouchi and Anzu. I believe Atem is trying to suppress himself as well. He has hidden himself from the others, and now isn’t sure if he should come out or not.
Realizing he can’t suppress this presence, Yugi admits the truth to his friends about believing he has another self inside him. He’s been putting the pieces together about his life ever since he solved the Millennium Puzzle. He blacks out and strange things happen. Shadi played a played a part in this realization too. He was the one who told Yugi about his other self and the duty of the one who solves the Puzzle. Our boy didn’t understand what he meant then, but now he does.
Yugi was scared about telling the others, afraid they’d leave him if they knew. Terrified of what this “other Yugi” could do. It’s possible Atem was hiding himself based on Yugi’s own feelings. He did some pretty scary things, and he doesn’t want Yugi to be haunted by them.
But Jonouchi assures Yugi, that even if he has another self inside him, they’ll always be friends. This restores Yugi’s faith. Soon Mokuba brings them out and challenges Yugi to Capsule Monsters, alone. He accepts the challenge, saying his friends taught him about true courage. And…
He lets Atem take control willingly for the first time. Yugi has accepted his other self!
With that, Atem no longer hides from the others. Not from his friends, and not from Yugi either.
And when it’s all over, with Kaiba defeated and his grandpa recovering, Yugi concludes with:
Finally, Yugi no longer has memory lapses. Atem has shared the memory of this battle with him. It is the first step of the beginning of Yugi and Atem’s true bond and friendship.
